Free agent signings.....

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Thanks in advance.

Former Raven on track to join Jaguars

By MICHAEL C. WRIGHT, The Times-Union

The Jaguars, on the verge of their first free-agent signing of 2007, have agreed to terms with former Baltimore offensive tackle Tony Pashos, who will fly to Jacksonville later this afternoon to take a physical.
"As long as the physical checks out we'll sign him today," Jags coach Jack Del Rio said.

Financial terms weren't disclosed.

A fifth-year veteran, Pashos (6-6, 320 pounds), immediately becomes the club's starter at right tackle. He'll take over for Maurice Williams, who enters his seventh season. Williams and Khalif Barnes will compete for the start at left tackle.

"He's a good, solid player; a stronger, bigger man that will give us a push in the run game and give us a firmer pocket," Del Rio said. "We feel like the other guys will compete and give us more production from the left-tackle position."

Pashos started all 16 games for the Ravens in 2006 and seven games in 2005. Del Rio said the club is also in the midst of other negotiations, but declined to discuss specific details. The Jaguars historically don't bring free agents to town unless the team is close to a deal with the player.

According to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, free agent Nate Clements has been signed or will soon sign with the San Francisco 49ers. The report comes from Thomas Sorrell, a writer for RealFootball365.

Email from Geoff Hobson:
Clements is gone to san fran for $23 M to sign - a deal the Bengals could have done if they cut the few guys who do play defense.

Free-agent lineman leaves Vikings for Buffalo
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Buffalo Bills: Despite all the talk of high-profile players landing big-money deals in the opening minutes of the unrestricted free agency period, the first veteran to change teams is a journeyman offensive lineman with a blue-collar background.

Ninth-year vet Jason Whittle, who appeared in 16 games for the Vikings with two starts in 2006, has signed a one-year contract with the Bills, agent Joe Linta said early Friday morning.

The deal includes a base salary of $720,000, and Whittle received a $40,000 signing bonus. The Vikings also discussed re-signing the 31-year-old Whittle, who could compete for a starting job in Buffalo, where the Bills on Thursday released 11-year veteran Chris Villarrial.

The versatile Whittle, who is joining his fourth franchise, has spent time at all five offensive line spots during his career. His résumé includes 125 regular-season appearances with 42 starts. Whittle started 14 games in 2002 and 16 games in 2004.

The former Southwest Missouri State standout has served stints with the Giants (1998-2002, 2004-2005), Tampa Bay (2003) and Minnesota (2006). He entered the league as an undrafted college free agent.

The Falcons had a good fullback in Justin Griffith, but they decided to go bigger and more expensive.

On Friday, the Falcons reached a six-year, $18 million deal with Ravens fullback Ovie Mughelli that included a $5 million signing bonus. The blockbuster deal is the biggest contract given to a pure fullback.

Mughelli is the second Ravens player to leave in the first day of free agency. Right tackle Tony Pashos signed a five-year, $24 million deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The reason for the Mughelli big deal is competition. The Dolphins were interesed in putting Mughelli with featured running back Ronnie Brown. Cam Cameron, the Dolphins new head coach, wanted to copy the one-two backfield put he had in San Diego with LaDainian Tomlinson and fullback Lorenzo Neal by matching Mughelli with Brown.

As the free agency opened early Friday morning, Mughelli had offers of $2.75 million a year, which was roughly $800,000 over Neal, who negotiated the league's highest fullback extension on Thursday.

STEINBACH SIGNS WITH THE BROWNS

Several published reports confirm that the Cleveland Browns have signed offensive lineman Eric Steinbach. The deal is worth $49.5 million over seven years.

Steinbach is expected to play right tackle for the Browns.

The deal exceeds by $500,00 the contract signed last season by guard Steve Hutchinson with the Vikings.

We reported on Thursday night that Steinbach already had an agreement in principle with the Browns. And, let's face it, there's no way that much money changed hands based on one day.

Steinbach started his career with the Bengals. Last year, he was arrested for boating while drunk. By trading the Ohio River for Lake Erie, he'll have a bigger margin for error if he decides to do it again.

CLEMENTS BLOWS OUT THE CURVE

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the San Francisco 49ers have signed cornerback Nate Clements.

It's a mind-boggling eight-year, $80 million deal, with $22 million in guaranteed money, and it makes Clements the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

A league source tells us that, as a practical matter, it's a six-year deal worth $7.25 million per year.

Clements was expected to be pursued by several teams. But he never got out of San Fran.

THOMAS TO PATS?

John Tomase of the Boston Herald reports that the New England Patriots are in the process of signing linebacker Adalius Thomas.

Tomase cites a rival executive, who says that the deal is done.

Thomas was expected to be pursued heavily by the 49ers and the Patriots.

Niners give S Michael Lewis outrageous contract

49ers signed safety Michael Lewis, who lost his starting job in 2006, to a six-year contract that will guarantee him $10 million.

Coach Mike Nolan says he'll start, which moves Mark Roman to free safety. Lewis seemed to lose his confidence in coverage last year but has a Pro Bowl on his resume and is plenty young enough to gain it back, although the money here is simply outrageous. Keith Lewis heads to the bench and Marcus Hudson will likely help out in a situational role

I'm hoping SF cut Marcus Hudson so we can get him. Not because I'm an NC State fan where he played, he just always seems to be around the ball and loves to make a hit.

JAGS SIGN DENNIS NORTHCUTT

According to the Florida Times-Union, the Jaguars have signed receiver Dennis Northcutt.

The five-year deal is worth a surprising $3.4 million per season.

Northcutt had only 22 catches for 228 yards in 2006. As one league insider explained, however, teams are willing to pay for return specialists.

Sports Talk Radio is already killing them for this move.
They've got ...
Reggie Williams - 1st round pick -soon to be tagged with the "B-word"
Matt Jones - 1st round pick - will make a pretty good TE someday (played QB in collage)
Earnest Wolfork - 4th round pick - tendered RFA (can be had for a 3rd round pick) - actually the best receiver on the team.

Williams and Jones have good speed but can't hold onto the ball, Wolfork isn't as fast (not by much) but catches everything thrown his way. (could be the missing link in our passing attack). All three are the same type WR, Why they would bring in a 4th with less talent thaan the 3 already here as the fan base crazy. There was talk of giving up a 3rd rounder for most at one point (that wouldn't have nade any sense either).

NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports the Lions have signed defensive lineman Dewayne White to a five-year, $29 million contract.

White, a former pupil of current Lions coach Rod Marinelli during their days in Tampa, will be an instant starter opposite Kalimba Edwards. White isn't a premier pass rusher but is big and versatile. He'll likely play right end and square off against left tackles in Detroit's Tampa 2.

Chiefs signed G/T Damion McIntosh to a six-year contract.

McIntosh can play all positions on the line aside from center, but is turning 30 and the Chiefs were rumored to be looking at him as a left tackle. They may wind up disappointed if that speculation is true

Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe's new contract pays $18.2 million over five years. It includes $7 million in guarantees.

Insanity. He has 35 total receptions in four seasons and has averaged 7.2 yards-per-catch. Coach Brad Childress must see something that we and the NFC East haven't. He'll clearly be Minnesota's starter in 2007

NFL.com's Adam Schefter reports the Patriots' offer sheet to restricted free agent Wes Welker will be for seven years and $38.5 million.

Once Welker signs the offer, Miami will have seven days to decide whether to match. It's doubtful they will, as they'll get a second-round pick for letting him walk. Welker can return kicks and has sure hands, but isn't a deep threat and stands 5-9. The Patriots are going buck wild

Browns agreed to terms with OLB Antwan Peek on a three-year contract.
We like it. If the 6-3/250-pound Peek can stay healthy, he'll get to the passer. Cleveland didn't need a star edge rusher as much as offensive line help, and addressed that with Eric Steinbach. Peek, 27, is worth a gamble as a possible replacement for Willie McGinest on the outside

 Wes Welker???

The Skins give a $30M contract to Lloyd and they say we waaaaaay over spent. $38.5M for Welker??? Because it's the Pat's, they will say it was a smart move at a good price. Welker sucks!

Former Vikings QB Brad Johnson agreed to terms today on a three-year contract with the Dallas Cowboys, where he’ll back up young starter Tony Romo.

Johnson visited Denver over the weekend but has a strong comfort level with Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.

Oh, and for those of you who forgot, Johnson’s nickname has long been “The Bull” because of his strong-willed personality.

Seahawks reach 6-year agreement with DE Kerney
By John Clayton
ESPN.com

After two days of negotiations, the Seattle Seahawks reached an agreement with Atlanta Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney, considered the best remaining free agent on the market.

Kerney
Kerney, 29, got a six-year, $39.5 million contract that included $19.5 million in guarantees. He was involved in a two-way negotiating battle with the Seahawks and Denver Broncos. The decision was going to be a tough one, but it required a deadline. Kerney and his agents used the length of a flight to make his decision.

Kerney and his agents, Tony Agnone and Rich Rosen, got on a Paul Allen private plane that was taking them to Seattle. They spent the time in the plane deciding the best options. When he left Seattle, Kerney informed the Broncos and Seahawks he would have an answer by the time the plane touched down in Atlanta.

The winner was Seattle, but now another battle brews. The Seahawks and Broncos enter into negotiations Tuesday with New England Patriots tight end Daniel Graham.

Kerney is expected to give the Seahawks a much-needed pass rush. The 6-5, 273-pound defensive end has had three double-digit sack seasons and a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2004. Though hurt by injuries last season, Kerney is still expected to play at a Pro Bowl level.

It probably helped that Kerney got to know Seahawks general Tim Ruskell when Ruskell worked in Atlanta.

Broncos, RB Henry agree on five-year deal
NFL.com wire reports

DENVER (March 5, 2007) -- The Denver Broncos and running back Travis Henry have reached an agreement on a five-year deal with $12 million in guaranteed bonuses.

Henry was released by the Tennessee Titans after the two sides couldn't restructure a contract that contained an $8.3 million bonus that was due Monday. He rushed for 1,211 yards and seven touchdowns last season for Tennessee.

The Broncos did not announce the signing, which was disclosed by someone familiar with the deal who requested anonymity because it had not yet been signed.

The Broncos were in the market for a running back after dealing last season's leading rusher Tatum Bell to Detroit -- along with offensive lineman George Foster and a fifth-round pick -- for cornerback Dre' Bly.

It's been a busy offseason for Denver, who also traded quarterback Jake Plummer to Tampa Bay on Saturday for a conditional draft choice in 2008. However, Plummer said on the Jake Plummer Foundation Web site that he plans to retire.

The Broncos also acquired defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson from Miami for a sixth-round pick in next month's draft and signed offensive lineman Montrae Holland to a one-year deal.

Henry, 28, has spent the last two seasons with the Titans, who acquired him from the Buffalo Bills in July 2005. He's rushed for 5,395 yards in his career and 34 touchdowns.

The Bills drafted him in the second round of the 2001 draft out of the University of Tennessee.
