Do we make the Call for Bly?

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Do we make the Call for Bly?

Lions' Bly has permission to talk to other teams
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Two-time Pro Bowl performer Dre' Bly, one of the NFL's top big-play cornerbacks, has been granted permission by Detroit Lions officials to seek potential trade possibilities.

Such permission has become more commonplace around the NFL over the past few seasons but rarely results in a trade. Essentially, it means that Bly and his agent have the right to seek out possible trades, but the Lions must still agree to any deal.

The Detroit Free Press first reported on Wednesday that Bly has permission to talk to other teams. Other area newspapers have reported that Bly is unhappy with his situation and that he has requested that the Lions trade him.

Bly, 29, was signed by the Lions as an unrestricted free agent in 2003, after playing his first four NFL seasons with the St. Louis Rams. He earned Pro Bowl honors in two of his first three seasons in Detroit, but his man-to-man style suddenly became a poor fit for the team in 2006, when the Lions hired Rod Marinelli as head coach.

The cover two scheme installed by Marinelli and his staff last season does not demand great coverage skills. Instead, it requires cornerbacks to be more proficient in zones and combination packages and to excel in run support.

Playing in the new scheme in 2006, Bly registered three interceptions, his lowest total since 2002. There were times last year that the eight-year veteran, who might have the best hands of any cornerback in the NFL, appeared uncomfortable in the defense.

Compounding the situation is that Bly will enter the final year of his contract in 2007, has a $4.2 million base salary and a salary cap charge in excess of $5 million. Bly could play for the Lions in 2007 and then depart as an unrestricted free agent after the season, with Detroit getting nothing in return.

It might be in the team's best interests then to deal Bly now, if there are interested suitors, which there figure to be.

A former North Carolina star, Bly was chosen by St. Louis in the second round of the 1999 draft. He made an immediate impact as a nickel defender before moving into the starting lineup. In 119 appearances, including 79 starts, Bly has 346 tackles, 33 interceptions, 113 passes defensed, 17 forced fumbles, seven recoveries and three sacks.

Especially explosive on balls thrown in front of him, Bly has returned five interceptions for touchdowns in his career.

I would like to start off by saying that more than anything, we are not going to get him cheap. Most people always say "If we can get him cheap....." Its just not going to happen so any other thoughts.

I wonder if they are willing to take a RB off our hands. Is it worth it to give Ladell Betts for a CB of his talents. What about CP and freeing up his salary Cap number and going with Betts. I'm not saying that I want any of this to happen. I'm throwing out possabilities.

No No No He is in no way a shutdown corner. He is a corner who gets beat because he is too agressive. He makes big plays but he also gets punished. Too many better options out there at this point to settle on dre bly

Send Portis to Detroit, with a note telling Dre not to hold his breath waiting on some team making a deal for him.

Then CP can take him to the side and tell him to threaten to sit-out team function until he has to show up to get credit for the full season.

Detroit will cut him and deal with a little over a million in dead cap and he can hit the market.

Portis can then jump back on Redskin1 and fly out of the country until the signing period ends.

Hmmm...only if they will take Warrick Holdman, a 9th Round draft pick and a bag of Funyons for Bly.

But, he's a good player. (I played against him in high school, he played for a team called Western Branch, and he was a beast then.

I remember it was a home game for us. The won the toss, and he went like 100 yards for a TD on the opening kick off return. We went on to lose like 42 to 10...with him doing pretty much everything.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

Think, we traded CHAMP BAILEY for CP and trading CP for Dre Bly would be the same thing as trading CHAMP BAILEY for Dre Bly

And throw in the second round pick.

I say no to the idea. No way would he be value for money, even without having to trade for him.

I think we all agree something has to be done at corner. Springs is getting old, the verdick is not yet out on Carlos rodgers(I personally was hoping for Pacman to fall that draft) and Kenny wright is just, well, bad........Not sure if bly is the answer though he was a beast in college.

Ugh, good lord, have you followed Pac-Man's career? That's the last thing the Redskins need. I think expectations were wayyyyyyy too high for Rogers last year, especially given the pathetic pass rush. I'd like to see improved play from the secondary, no question, but I think shoring up the d-line plays a big role in that process.

100% ACCURATE. It's hard to accurately gauge how well the rest of the D would have played had the dline been decent.

And to be honest the 2005 line left a lot to be desired, we took a step back in 2006. Not only do we need to surpass 06, we need to surpass 05. There has to be improvement somewhere.

I'm just going to put this out there and see what happens: I think all of the problems can be solved if I start dating the Redskins cheerleaders. Think about it, it's a win-win-win scenario*.

I say get Bly if Clements does not work out. Also Id rather pick up Ricky Manning Jr. // Bly would be a solid starter. He is physical and is a playmaker. I wouldnt mind having him if we get him a decent price. No trades for Portis Period.

The Lions are shopping everyone defensive end James Hall, and defensive tackle Marcus Bell have also been given permission to seek a trade.

Within the next week, the Detroit Lions are expected to receive notable offers for their cornerback Dre Bly, who is on the trading block.

Knowing that Bly is on the block, Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall admitted that he has been lobbying Atlanta's front office to trade for the Lions Pro Bowl cornerback.

Hall and Bly grew up in the same area in Virginia, and Hall considers Bly an older brother. The two speak on the telephone on an almost daily basis, and Hall now is doing the small part he can to bring Bly to Atlanta.

"I'd love to see it happen," Hall said during his visit to Indianapolis.

Bly would be the perfect complement to Hall and give the Falcons the two cornerbacks they need in a division that includes Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith, New Orleans wide receiver Marques Colston and could possibly include wide receiver Calvin Johnson in Tampa Bay.

But no matter how much Hall wants Bly in Atlanta, it is the Falcons that have to want him more. They will have to satisfy Detroit's asking price as well as Bly's.

Broncos, Redskins show interest in Bly

Mike O'Hara / The Detroit News

The trade market for Lions cornerback Dri Bly is heating up, with the Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins strong candidates to make a bid for the two-time Pro Bowl player.

Bly, who has 33 career interceptions -- 19 in his four seasons with the Lions -- would fill a need for both teams.

The Broncos are looking for a cornerback to start opposite Champ Bailey , who has been voted to seven straight Pro Bowls. The Redskins have concerns about Shawn Springs , 32, because of injuries that limited him to nine games in 2006.

Bly, 30, has one year left on a contract that will pay him a base salary of $4.2 million in 2007.

Lions president Matt Millen also is trying to complete a trade for defensive end James Hall before Friday. The St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders reportedly have expressed an interest in Hall.

The free-agent signing period begins Friday, and Hall has a roster bonus due if he is on the Lions roster Friday.

The Lions have made it known that they will release Hall rather than pay the bonus.

I just saw this on Sportsceneter. Pretty interesting. I wonder if we are trying to get both players? We do have need at both positions.

Just heard on NFL Network that we are in trade talks with them for Bly (who is from DC area). I just hope we are not giving up the house. Makes me wonder about Smoot if we are going to wait to see if he gets released.

If we get Bly, I guarantee you, we will "give up he house" as you say. That's what we do.......dammit!
