Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Mark Brunell is a few minor details away from agreeing to a contract that would clear the way to him being traded to the Washington Redskins for a third-round pick in this year's draft.
Brunell, who can't officially be traded until March 3, would not give the specifics of his contract when reached Tuesday, but another source said it is believed to be a seven-year deal, not the reported three-year deal.
"We've had some good discussions in the past few days and it's looking like it could get done," Brunell said Tuesday night. "When and if it gets done, I look forward to playing for the Redskins and owner Dan Snyder and coach Joe Gibbs."
The Jaguars, according to a league source, have agreed to take a third-round pick in exchange for Brunell. The 33-year-old quarterback was due a roster bonus of $2 million March 1, which made many assume he would be released.
You know the contract is going to be big, hopefully it will be cap-friendly.
I'm very happy to see that we're only giving up a third-round pick, but I'm also a little suprised. I think for some other teams (Miami, Dallas) Brunell might be worth a second rounder...
i read somewhere earlier though i can't remember where, that the pukes may have turned thier intrest to peyton manning, since it was obvious they'd have to give up a pick for a vet anyways. they weren't going to give up a pick for brunell, or so that article stated...

Seven Year Deal huh? What kinda message does a 7 yr deal send to PRam? I've posted that PRam and agent just be patient, but 7 yrs. And yes, I know that they structured it this way for cap reasons... but still
I think the message it sends is that this is not a huge contract other than to spread the cap hit out over time so we don't take it in the shorts. I bet he gets a 10 mil signing bonus which spreads out nicely over 7 years, and that is nice guaranteed money up front for Brunell. Then the rest of what he wants is paid out in the standard escalating contract which don't mean squat if Brunell retires later.
The cap hit later - 3 or 4 years won't be bad for dead money and the salaries are cheap.
It would tell me as PRam that Brunell wasn't getting paid a lot more than me showing me that he wasn't guaranteed the spot - JUST LIKE SOME OF US have been maintaining all along - Gibbs is honest and trustworthy - if he say PRam has a chance to keep his spot he meant it.
On the other hand - if it is a much larger deal I would get worried. The 20 mil number kept creeping up though, so I wouldn't be surprised to see that be around the figure of the contract. I really would be expecting 5 years though - not 7, but if it works - what the heck.

It's very possible that Peyton Manning will hit the market. The Colts have big contracts in James and Harrison and the numbers Peyton figures to demand could be astronomical. Additionally, Indy isn't exactly the best sports town and maybe Manning would like to make his mark somewhere else. I hope the Colts find a way to hold onto him because he is the last person I want to see in Dallas...
I heard that - I still think that Harrison wouldn't be as good (though still top 5) without Manning - their rapport is too important for Dungy to just let go.

The Jaguars were scheduled to pay Brunell a $2 million roster bonus on March 3, but Brunell now plans to waive that bonus as part of the proposed trade, the league source said. Brunell, who has one year left on his existing contract, would recoup that $2 million as part of his signing bonus in a new deal with the Redskins."
- I also heard that the Skins are going to pay the 2 MIL bonus instead of the Jags...whats up with that? I hope that is considered part of Brunell's signing bonus.
PS - If Peyton Manning is tagged then his cap will be $18.5 million.

Why are we going to pay Brunell starters money he cant be the starter for the future if he starts this year or not. Hes 33 and Ramsey is 24 with tremendous upside. I dont kno what the hell anybody with the Skins can be thinking. The only logical thing I can see coming out of this is it will bring out the best in Ramsey to compete for the starting job. I think Ramsey can be a great QB I hope the skins dont blow it with him and trade him.
I agree with you 100% psu! Brunell is a quality QB, and the only possible reason to get him would be to elevate Ramsey's play. I think getting a more efficient QB, say....Dilfer, would be much better suited to our needs. He would provide the veteran leadership to Ramsey that he may need, as well as good play if Ramsey goes down. I couldn't believe B-more let him go right after winning a SB!
