This is off-topic (and thus moved) but an interesting conversation all the same.
That's not entirely accurate, per Hollywood accounting -- which is as shady and suspect as it gets -- only about 5% of the films ever made have been profitable. It would be difficult, for example, to say the LOTR trilogy was not profitable, Peter Jackson's suit is based on the fact that he feels New Line understated the profits.
But the point it still valid, Hollywood's method of accounting is less than straightforward.

And do you know the reason for this accounting abberation?
I worked in the film industry for 3 years in NYC.
Actors and some production personel (directors) always negotiate a percentage of net profits into their contracts. The producers make sure that payout (almost) never happens.
It is a shady, shady business and it's a miracle that anything ever gets made with the wage discrepancies among the production personel as well as the talent. (kinda like the Redskins!)
