Springs on IR-Rumph waived
Redskins place CB Springs on IR, waive CB Rumph
December 27, 2006
ASHBURN, VIRGINIA (TICKER) -- If the Washington Redskins want to spoil the New York Giants' playoff hopes, they will have to do so without cornerback Shawn Springs.
One of Washington's top cover corners, Springs on Wednesday was placed on injured reserve with a fractured right shoulder blade.
Springs, 31, suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Redskins' 37-31 overtime loss to the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. The 10-year-veteran also was sidelined five games earlier in the campaign while recovering from abdominal surgery.

Kenny Wright figures to start in place of Springs when the Redskins (5-10) conclude their season against the rival Giants (7-8) on Saturday night. New York is tied with Green Bay, St. Louis, Atlanta and Carolina for the NFC's final wild card.
In nine games this season, Springs recorded 38 tackles and one interception. He has 27 interceptions in 132 career games with Washington and the Seattle Seahawks.
The Redskins made another roster move Wednesday, waiving disappointing cornerback Mike Rumph. A former first-round draft selection of the San Francisco 49ers, Rumph appeared in seven games this year, recording 11 tackles.
Rumph, 27, has 138 tackles and three interceptions in 43 career games over five seasons with Washington and San Francisco.
To replace Springs and Rumph on the active roster, the Redskins signed defensive backs Leigh Torrence and John Eubanks from the practice squad.
Torrence played in 10 games with the Falcons last season but was waived prior to the beginning of the 2006 campaign. Eubanks was signed by the Redskins as an undrafted free agent last May.

Sucks about SS. If we learned anything this year its that our D doesn't work without him on the field.
If there is a more pressing need to address this offseason than corner, I don't know what it is.

I just had this conversation with a friend who is a Niners fan.
Jacobs still is on the Niners roster. Caught 2 whole balls for 14 yards this year!

To be fair, he's probably had less opportunities to catch the ball than Carlos Rogers this year.

Rogers is just having a rough year. I think there is a lot of pressure on him this year being his first year as a starter. I also think he was constantly overthinking the whole process. He will be fine. I think that if we draft a good corner in the 1st or whenever, he could play nickle. A guy in FA could also be an answer. I also don't want a guy who is going to be expensive.

With our 1st? No way we're spending another 1st on a secondary player.
Or wait. Maybe we can find a starting-caliber corner with one of our other draft picks. Like maybe our 5th, 6th or 7th picks.
Lots of excellent starting CBs drafted in the 7th round, right?
i think Nathan Vasher was drafted in the 4th round, and he is a starting CB for the Chicago bears

Great. I looked through the 2001-2005 drafts, and of the 17 corners picked in the 4th round, only 4 start or play a significant amount in the NFL.
But 4th round doesn't matter. Guess how many 4th round draft picks we have...that's right, ZERO.
In the 2001-2005 drafts, from the 42 CBs picked in the 5th-7th round, the only starters are Jeremetrius Butler and LaMont Brightful (though he only plays as a KR. Doesn't play defense at all).
If you trust the Redskins FO, which has had an awful success rate of selecting lower round talent, to buck those odds, you have much more faith in them than I do.
