Story Highlights
• Bush, Japan's leader agree U.N. must take "decisive action"
• South Korea: We'll "react sternly and calmly" with "appropriate measures"
• U.S. consulting with allies, pushing for sanctions at 9:30 a.m. U.N. meeting
• China, N. Korea's ally, denounces test as "brazen"

This is very serious. Keep an eye on the Press Releases of the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO Preparatory Commission)

http://www.ctbto.org/

This organization has a mandate to monitor and detect such activities. An event with a magnitde of 4.2 in the Richter scale was detected throughout observatories in the region, the train of seismic waves (mainly compressional P waves) makes it possible to differentiate from natural seismic events which contain a different train of waves, which also include S or Shear waves among others.

Very disturbing. It is a cry for attention intended to bring the US and its allies to the negotiation table for economic assistance from a position of strength under a threat. Forget about Iraq, this is really very serious crap.

Bush: N. Korea nuke test claim a threat to peace
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush on Monday said North Korea's claim that it has tested a nuclear weapon is a threat to international peace and said the world "will respond."

...

China's reaction
China on Monday demanded Pyongyang stop any action that would worsen the situation, Reuters news service reports.

"The DPRK has ignored the widespread opposition of the international community and conducted a nuclear test brazenly on October 9," China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its Web site.

"The Chinese government is firmly opposed to this," the statement said.

In Tokyo, the prime minister's office said Japan had established a task force to address the situation. Chief government spokesman Yasuhisa Shiozaki said if a nuclear test was confirmed, Japan would "strongly protest" it.

Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the claimed test, Russian news agencies reported, as Russia demanded North Korea rein in its nuclear program.

On Friday, the Security Council warned North Korea against performing a nuclear test, citing unspecified action if it should do so.

South Korean eyed for top U.N. role
The Security Council also has called on North Korea to return immediately to six-party talks with China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States. The United States and its allies have been urging North Korea to rejoin the talks aimed at persuading the reclusive Communist nation to abandon its nuclear arms program.

On Monday, members of the U.N. Security Council were expected to select South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon to succeed Kofi Annan as secretary-general of the world body.

In a straw poll last Monday, all but one of the 15 council members supported that choice, according to Chinese Ambassador Wang Guangya.

Best news so far are the critcisms of China. Russia went further to condemn that action. Hopefully the US will see that this the openning to get a message to North Korea.

Well, what are we waiting for?!? We invaded Iraq because we THOUGHT they had WMD. Now we KNOW that NK has WMD, so that's a green light, right? Gather up the Alliance and let's move!

Well, one man's threat is another man's opportunity. This is truly a chance for China to earn some credit. Let's hope they don't blow it, because I don't think any amount of bluster from GW is going to make the North Koreans back down.

The Chinese have their own quiet way to deal with Kim.

They feel embarrassed because North Korea moved without consultations with PRC on this issue. NOBODY can deal with NK as effectively and efficiently as PRC.

Like it or not, the world is really in the hands of PRC on this issue. Scary? You bet!

And you can bet they'll want something in return. Can we give them Iran to deal with as well? :-k
