"Un-sportsmanlike Conduct" penalty is out of contr

I'm usually against excessive celebrations like Chad Johnson does, or T.O, Randy Moss, et. all, but I gotta say, this new rule that doesn't allow "Two players to demonstrate" is out of control. It's absolutely ridiculous. There were two such penalties in the Redskins/Jags game this week that I think were completely and utterly ridiculous. The first one, when Moss scored a TD, Brandon Lloyd came over and innocently hoisted him up from behind for all of about three seconds. They threw a flag for excessive celebration. Then, when the Jags picked up the fumble from Lloyd, they flaggged the Jags for two players demonstrating.

Is it just me, or is this new rule going a little too far? I mean, surely they don't wanna take the fun out of it for the players. People always complain how the football players are so greedy and selfish, and only care about the money instead of the game. Aren't "games" supposed to be fun? Well, when you take the fun out of it like that, it's not helping at all. A simple, harmless, and brief celebration should not be flagged, in my opinion. Human nature is to celebrate, even if only for a second or two, when something suddenly euphoric like a TD happns. I think it's utterly ridiculous!!!!

O.K. I'm finsihed venting! Give me a break, it's a Monday morning after a thriller at FedEx, I'm locked in my office with nothing but coffee and a headache. I'm just gonna wait here until my voice gets back!!

I've not read the rule but I wonder whether this is a question of the rules being written in such a way that the refs are not able to exercise discretion. As a concept though, the NFL is hunting mosquitoes with rocket launchers.

Being glagged for anything other than taunting is rediculous in a situation like that.

This is the No Fun League.

One time a guy on my Jr. High football team (who was funny as hell) was playing line with me, when a play was called to our side we blocked well and allowed the RB to score.

My friend (also named Joe) said to a defensive lineman: "Sir, I do believe that is a touchdown."

Sometimes it's that kind of stuff that gets the defense the maddest. Who is even paying attention to player celevrations in the first place?

I mean, in golf, when a player and caddie high five after a great putt or chip shot are people booing? What about when a player hits a home run and his teammates greet him at home plate? Or when a basketball player is mobbed after a score?

Who cares?

Actually, I think the Redskins were flagged because while Moss had his arms crossed, Portis stood next to him with HIS arms crossed. So they were technically celebrating together. And we all know that a celebration of group arm-crossing leads to terrorist activity and teen pregnancy.

It was on Jax for celebrating after LLoyd's fumble.

No, that was the second taunting penalty of the game. The first one was on the Redskins for celebrating Moss' first TD.

Yeah, I didn't see exactly what happened. All they showed on TV was someone picking up Moss. I was all prepared to be outraged if that is what drew the penalty and that had been a factor in a loss.

There is still a lot of inconsistancy with this rule. I was watching the New England game and after a touchdown a lineman picked up the receiver Doug Gabriel and there was no penalty in that game. I guess it is a call where the refs are supposed to use their judgement.

I never noticed before, but why is your son celebrating like a Tecmo Super Bowl player?

He wasn't even born when that game came out! lol

Also, does he still have a Ramsey jersey?

He has several jersey's, most important to him being Santana Moss. Ramsey no longer fits, but it's OK. He'd probably want us to put Espy on it. :lol:

As for the stance, that was his "touchdown arms."

Go to Clinton Portis' web site and (after checking out the stellar opening) you'll see an image of Clinton and Moss celebrating Moss' TD. THIS is why they called the taunting penalty, not because of the lift Moss got from Lloyd.

Well, you might have to describe for me what they did, because it wasn't on TV that I saw, and on the picture all I see is one guy with his hands on his hips and another with his arms crossed across his chest.

At any rate, the rules have gotten out of hand. There can be inappropriate individual celebrations, and there can be appropriate group celebrations. Also, the new taunting rule is a little over the top as well.

You got it. That's all there is to it. Portis and Moss (who had his arms crossed before Lloyd picked him up) standing there bouncing up and down slightly with their arms crossed. Which is so much worse than all the trash talk that goes on during a game. You can make a expletive-filled comment about a person's lineage during the game, but you can't high five a teammate after a touchdown. Silly.
