Expect to be asleep for the entire procedure. You've already covered the ice-cream. That's about the extent of my knowledge on this topic... I still have all my body parts... tonsils, appendix, spleen, both kidneys; some suspect I still have my heart and brain too, so that's all good!
Good luck Chris.
If men can run the world, why can't they stop wearing neckties? How intelligent is it to start the day by tying a little noose around your neck?
Good luck Chris and don't count so much on the ice cream as perhaps popsicles. They're easier at least at the hospital.
I had mine out at age 4 so I don't remember my experience too well. My little brother had his out at 13 and I remember he did ok with it. I'm sure you'll be fine. Enjoy the time off of work and don't go back too soon.
Whenever I start to get blue, I just breathe!

Homer: "No Flanders, it's a meeting of gay witches for abortion , you wouldn't be interested!"
It's usually and in / out procedure unless you have problems. Italian Ice is good too...Like Niki said...the ice cream is a little too goopy...LOL Good Luck ! Guess you won't be able to hollar at the Skins game either - make sure you have sign language down pat !

You'll be fine, but if the surgeon asks you to drop your trousers and bend over, you should ask him to check your medical records before starting the procedure.

Ditto if they want to shave you before the operation. If it's a cute nurse, go ahead with the shave, then do the records thing.

You throat will be sore as hell for a few days. Ice cream will be your best friend during that period. I hope for your sake medicine has gotten better since I had my tonsils done(which was about 17 years ago). You will wake up with your troat feeling like the sahara desert. Dry and burning.
Well he just gave me some antibiotics. He said they dont like giving them out, does anyone know why? I was almost looking forward to having them taken out.
When my daughter had hers out (still have mine, thanks), they didn't give ice cream, but said to eat potato chips to keep large scabs from forming. They did say that popsicles were good, but we were to watch for any sign of blood if she became nauseous after the surgery. Of course she did, but since she'd been eating red popsicles (that's an official flavor, I think) we couldn't tell if there was blood in the vomitus or not without getting a LOT closer to it than I really wanted to. So I'd suggest stocking up on really good chips and light colored water ice/popsicles. As far as the surgery itself, it was out-patient for her, probably will be the same for you.

I'll be blunt, not because I want to scare you off, but because you deserve to know. The older you are, the more difficult and uncomfortable the procedure is. It will be very sore for a few days. Adults are also more likely to have nausea after the procedure, as well. For adults, there is usually one or two overnights.
Don't play tough guy. Accept the pain meds when they are offered. Drink cold clear non-carbonated liquid, lots of it, no matter how much it hurts. Suck on lots of popsicles (not too hard, though...) Skip the ice cream. It tends to thicken secretions, and increase the chances of coughing, which is not any fun. Italian ice is great. The object is to get past the painful part as quickly as possible.
The reason the doctor said that he doesn't like to administer antibiotics unless absolutely necessary is because bacteria can develop resistance to them if not taken properly. If you are taking an antibiotic, take it exactly as prescribed, and take all of them, even if you are feeling fine. It is stopping too early that gives the bacteria a chance to recover and to develop a resistance.
If your doctor recommends it, I'd say you probably need it. They don't do tonsilectomies for the heck of it anymore.
Good luck. Keep us posted.
