Wow...Just Awful
Well it's 4am here on the east coast and I just woke up and all night I was thinking how bad things looked last night in Cincy. Now I do understand it's preseason and I realized it doesnt matter who wins or loses buy aside from that how do you not get exited to play the first game of the season.
First, where was Brunell throwing that ball in the first quarter, running back and off his back foot, whether Lloyd was there or not a veteran QB shoud know better than that.
Todd Collins my god, Even thought he knows the offence, he only showed me he knows it on paper.
Even thought Portis got injured on the INT tackle I give him credit for not giving up and making the tackle.
All in all it was the first game and I know things will look better vs the Jets, Fed Ex will help, im sure.

The thing that concerns me most was the line play. Cincy ate us up on both sides of the ball. Collins, of course, looked simply inept. Campbell holds the ball too long.
If last night was any indication, we could be in for a long season.

Exactly! We took our starters out wayyyyyy before Cincy did. The only worrying matter is in regards to Portis.

It was a bad game, enough said. If anything this really might be the type of game that helps the Skins. Im sure that
a. there are going to be some cuts because of that game
b. greg williams is gonna go ape ...... this week
c. we are going to play alot better next week
There was absolutely nothing embarrasing though about that game. It was a preaseason game filled with a bunch of players who will not even be on the team in 3 weeks.
In response to the first question asked from Mr. 4 AM, and where brunell was throwing the ball, he was trying to get it out of bounds and didn't get enough behind it. If you don't think that the first two drives we had on offense were somewhat successful, besides the way they ended, i don't know which game you were watching.
Two plays stood out to me last night, the B-Loyd catch and the bomb from J. Campbell to Buck Ortega. #17 may have had a pick last night but watching him sit back in that pocket was fun, im looking forward to next week when J Campbell comes in 2nd quarter. Mike Espy looked really crisp too.
It sucks to lose, but id rather do it now then on 9/11.

I'm firmly on the bandwagon.
This game is exactly what the skins needed. There has been too much positive press about them lately and they must have been reading it. This is a wake up call - especially the 2nd, 3rd stringers.
When our starters were in there - they looked good - not great but good. Our starting D had Cinn going backwards! Our O was moving the ball untill the interception. The skins have a lot to work on but they also showed a lot of potential.
Plus you have to remember that a Gibbs team doesn't show much in preseason ... it plain vanilla all the way. Cinn pull out a couple of 'fancier' plays and caught our 3rd stringers off guard. Its better that that happens now - rather than later.
I think the skins learned more about their team from this game than Cinn - and after all, isn't that what preseason is all about?
All this loss means is that - at least for this year - we will not have a perfect preseason record.

Beautiful post Rick!
Didn't we lose all of our preseason games during a superbowl winning year?
Didnt we look bad last preseason?
Wasn't Patrick stinking it up?
Wasn't the running game not looking too hot?
Didnt the Ravens defeat us in our last preseason game and everyone had them going to the playoffs and us being at the bottom of the east?
Wasn't CP supposed to have another horrible year?
Moss was supposed to be a bust?
Gibbs was going to abandon us and go back to racing?
How soon we forget....

I didn't think the game was all that bad! There were quite a few bright spots!
One of them was Campbell! This was the first game where he saw extensive action and considering that..........I think he did darn good! Can't wait to see what he's gonna do next week against the Jets at home!
The other one was Lloyd! Get this! He's our number two reciever and he ACTUALLY GOT SEPARATION FROM THE DEFENDER!!!!! I can't remember the last time our number two reciever did something like that!
Another one....had to be Rocky. Anyone else see him just run right by a blocker and knock the crap out of a running back on........I can't remember if it was second and short or third and short. Whatever it was that was an awesome tackle!
Now, I know Collins looked awful, but he didn't even look half as awful as that Cincy reciever who caught that 40 yard touchdown pass! He made an ass out of himself with that dance he did!!!!!! He very seriously has me thinking that he is gay!

it is preseason, and there's no reason to go off the deep end, but it was a nationally televised game and a lot of back-up players were hoping to make an impact... they didn't, they got pounded... the concern is that in a 16 game season alot of those guys that got pounded are going to get playing time this year, so they need to treat those situations like it's the real deal...

I understand where you're coming from. I dont believe that we'll be seeing a mass amount of these guys during the regular season at anyone one time. If someone goes down we'll see those who played good enough get inserted in. Their lack of ability/experience will be shrouded because of whom they're surrounded by. If Rocky needs to go in his slack will be picked up by Sean, Lemar, etc.
I think it was just the mass amount of inexperience at one time that killed our 2nd and 3rd string guys.

Our D held Cincys high flying yet vanilla offense to.... -19 yards most running backs last night didn't get +19 yards. After they left most of the experience and hard hitters left the field so unless our entire 1st string Defense gets into a Bus accident on the way to a game I am not worried about the skins. I figure if Baltimore could win a superbowl without a big name quarterback, or receivers and an outstanding D. I think as long as brunell or whoevers in their can not throw many interceptions we should be fine.

Yep and those defenders who played well last night will be inserted in as needed. They won't be too big of a hinderance too the team because the slack will be picked up. Before we know it we'll have another experienced player to fill in and wont miss a beat.

Keep in mind that this is a pre-season game. It counts for nothing except for evaluation and injuries. They are huge for the players trying to make the team, a drudge for the starters and cause us fans to go from estatic to suicidal with each play.
There was some good and bad last night.
Good - Campbell showed that he has a ways to go but in general looked good, Espy looked really good, MacIntosh showed really good.
Bad - Brunell looked more like the year before last, the injuries, Wright looked bad, Collins showed why he is there as a tutor (may god above help us if he has to be the quarterback), the offense needs lots of work, someone needs to throw Cash in the trash, .
Don't get all uptight, there are 3 more pre-season games to go and they do not count for anything more than this one did.

I really don't see where you get the feeling that Brunell looked so horrible. Obviously he had the interception, but that was a preseason mistake, and as you say preseason is preseason. Minus that he moved the team down the field pretty effectively and in no way did he look like gimpy brunell of two years ago. As for saying the offense needs alot of work? I don't really know where you get that notion either. Brunell was ok, Collins was horrible, and Campbell looked pretty darn ok to me. Campbell had two passes, one that was a 40 or something yard bomb, that Jimmy Farris dropped, had Santana, Lloyd, ARE or Patten been on the recieving end would have been caught, and he had one bomb that he put a little to far in front of Espy that would have been caught if he had santana running after it. I think there were flashes of good, and alot of bad from the backups.
It's so good to have the NFL back!!!!

I think I got the opinion that the offense needs work because they scored a grand total of 3 (THREE, TWO+1, ONE+2) points. Brunell didn't particularly shine. He moved the team but could not get them past the goal line. He got Portis hurt because of a really stupid play (not blaming Brunell, but a Redskin wasn't where the ball was). I read somewhere that his q-back rating for the night was worse than Collins (30.1 to 30.7). But as I said, this is the 1st pre-season game. It counts for nothing except for the guys trying to make the team and injuries. Don't take offense because someone criticizes Brunell. Also, keep in mind that many, many people, have said that it takes a year to get used to Saunders offense. (I hope they were wrong.) Expectations are running high even though that statement that has been made many, many times. We have 3 more pre-season game to go, I will worry if the last one looks as bad as this one did.

I for one am very disapointed... in some of us posters.
Dude, you guys need to lighten up a bit.
First off, why is everyone trashing Brunell??? He and the first team offense were moving the ball like cake down Cincy's throat the first or second drive. Sure, Mark threw a pick, but come on. It was a new WR, with a new 700 Page Play Book, and it was like the first series of '06.
And the 1st Team Defense was fricken awesome last night. Plus, the 2nd Team D-Line and Rocky and Robert played great too.
Calm down.
