Ramsey gets contract extension

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Jets sign QB Ramsey to one-year extensionBy Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

Quarterback Patrick Ramsey, acquired by the New York Jets earlier this spring to compete with the rehabilitating Chad Pennington for the starting job, has signed a one-year contract extension.

Ramsey
The extension, first reported by the New York Daily News, had been under discussion since the Jets added Ramsey in a deal with the Washington Redskins for a sixth-round draft choice. The add-on is worth $2.1 million and includes a $1.4 million roster bonus next spring.

The team also made a slight adjustment in Ramsey's contract for this season, converting $250,000 of his scheduled $1.688 million base salary into a roster bonus that was paid on June 30. Without the extension, Ramsey would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring, because this year represented the final season of his original rookie contract, signed in 2002.

Even with the extension, there are still no guarantees that Ramsey, 27, will return to the Jets in 2007. The team also owes Pennington, who dramatically adjusted his contract for this season to avoid being released as he recovered from a second surgery to his right rotator cuff, a $2 million roster bonus next spring.

It is unlikely the Jets will pay the two bonuses and retain both veteran quarterbacks beyond this season.

The Jets selected Kellen Clemens in the second round of this year's draft and the coaches reportedly were impressed with the former University of Oregon standout in their spring workouts. With the continuing uncertainty over Pennington, who has never played a full 16-game schedule and who has averaged only 8.3 starts over the last three seasons because of injuries, the starting situation remains unsettled.

First-year coach Eric Mangini has thrown the starting job open and Pennington, Ramsey, Clemens and three-year veteran Brooks Bollinger will compete in camp.

The Redskins' first-round choice in the 2002 draft, Ramsey has a 10-14 record as a starter. The former Tulane star has completed 480 of 861 passes for 5,649 yards, with 34 touchdown passes, 29 interceptions and a 75.0 passer rating. Ramsey began the 2005 season as the Redskins' starter but was replaced by Mark Brunell at halftime of the first game and did not start again all season.

Good for him. While things didn't pan out here for him, he conducted himself with alot of class, and I appreciate that. Hopefully things will work out for him......as long as he isn't playing the Skins.

Skins should have never let him go. The guy has a cannon for an arm. I guess they have great confidence in Jason Campbell in case Brunell goes down.

Congrats to Patrick.

Great arm... even better person; unfortunately, he just never seemed to be able to gain any pocket composure after being shell-shocked by the 'Spurrier years'.

34 touchdown passes, 29 interceptions and a 75.0 passer rating... that's why he was let go... not exactly stellar numbers and there were some BAD decisions in those 29 interceptions.

He had opportunity here, and it didn't work out. I think MOST Redskin fans would like to see Patrick go on to see better days though... he's really a class act.

I certainly would like to see him do well. I agree that he could never get comfortable after Spurrier threw him to the wolves.

Absolutely. I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of Steve Spurrier for ruining Ramsey.

Block the middle blitz? Why? Oh come on, you just got piledriven by Roy Williams. Suck it up, Patrick and throw it to Darkarian.

I've seen lot's of young QB's get ruined that way. Norm Snead comes immediately to mind. Some eventually recover, some don't (Tim Couch).

Patrick showed promise for a whole minute but then reality set in and who knows what went wrong. He had most of his success with Coles as his receiver so maybe he'll be able to put up some numbers (I hope so). I get upset when players leave only to flourish some place else in this case I wouldn't be upset.

I think Ramsey got "shell shocked" under SOS but a change of venue maybe good for him.

best of luck P-Ram

Actually I think Patrick will probably win the Jets job and start for the whole '06 Season.

Unfortunately Patrick's situation just never worked out here in Washington, but that does not mean he isn't a good QB.

He's got an awesome arm, which is perfect for playing in windy NY. And he's got pretty good deep ball accuracy.

I'm rooting for you Patrick

Good. They locked him up for the right to trade him...to a team that has a chance to win. : )

What if PRam wins the SB for the Jets, lol that would probably leave Gibbs with Egg on his face, but hey the man has won us 3 SB's and took us to the playoffs just 2 yrs out of retirement he has earned more than alittle lee-way. What I love most about Gibbs now is you can tell he still really hates Dallas, he throws respectfull comments about all our enemies but in his heart you know he's burning the midnight oil to take dallas down. Love IT.

I never ever thought I would cheer for a player in another team. But it is worse than that, these ae the darn Jets! Still, I will cheer for him. The guy is a class act all around. I wish he had stayed as our 2nd or 3rd QB.
