now i know people are totally against smoking in public areas and i hear you, its nasty, i mean i wouldnt want people smoking in planes or in a family restaurant but ive always believed that in bars it should be up to the proprieter to decide. isnt that the essence of capitalism. if a bar owner wants to open a bar that allows smoking he will attract one crowd and if another owner wants to take advantage of the non smoker market he can choose to. let the market decide not the legislature. each owner has the right to make his own decision in an effort to support himself and his family. the general public isnt forced into smoking areas if those places are indoors and clearly marked "people are smoking inside". likewise people who are smokers will choose not to go to places that dont allow it. i like to think we live in a free country where we can all have places to go without the government telling us how to run our businesses.

At my dad's bar, he built an outside patio for smokers since they can't smoke inside.

It works pretty well and the customers like it so whatever.

thats a good idea.. i wish more establishments were accomidating. too bad i live in NH and its freekin cold out side!!

but wouldnt it be great if bar owners had opened up smoke free bars on their own and it didnt requier government oversight?

Everyone has a right to smoke if they want regardless of how I feel about it. I personally can't understand why someone would want to cut off years of their life and bring on sicknesses that will make you suffer in pain.

If you want to do that to yourself go right on ahead but I dont feel that other should have to suffer the consequences of secondhand smoke.

I told my brother that I refuse to drive anywhere with him because of his smoking. I think its a disgusting habit and he's being selfish because he has a 1 year old in the house with him. He swears that he doesn't smoke near him but I doubt it. He and his car stinks of smoke.

oh man I would love that! Everytime my wife and I go play poker we come back and family wont come within 3 feet of us.

I don't think the government should regulate how a owner of a bar decides to run his or her business. However, they installed smoking bans in Austin last year, and it is really not a big deal to go outside on the patio of an establishment to smoke.

I think that bars/resturants are private establishments and should be run anyway they want to.

The argument can be made that a patron should be allowed to eat in any resturant and not be subjected to second hand smoke but just like anything else, you can choose weather or not to eat at the resturant in the first place.

This may not be the smartest business decision but in the end, I say leave it up to the owners.

As a smoker and living in Canada were this law has been in effect for over 2 years now, i can say its not bad but it still does suck. In the next couple months the smoking law stretchs for bar and resturants who built special places, it will have to 30 metres away from the building.

When last I checked, we had the right to decide what we did with our privately owned businesses, even if it were a "public" business, like a restaurant. Health code compliance, that sort of regulation, I understand. But to tell me all of a suden that I can't allow a certain type of activity in my restaurant/bar that was previously permitted, well, then you are stepping on my toes, and it's not the government's place to do that. That having been said, I didn't have a problem with stepping outside, nor did I have a problem with quitting smoking. I just think that there are a lot more issues that government has not dealt with that should be a bit more of a priority.

I agree 100%. Do you know that schools here no longer have PE, Art, or Music? I think that this is a true disgrace. I go teach my wife's kids how to throw a football. Not a PE teacher. My wife would do it but she doesnt do it right.
