Royal and Clark would stay if money's close

Redskins | Royal likely to hit the open market
Tue, 28 Feb 2006 05:38:48 -0800
David Elfin, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins TE Robert Royal is likely to hit the free-agent market March 3. Royal hasn't been paying as close attention to the NFL's labor situation as S Ryan Clark has, but he knows "there's a lot of stuff going on with the 'Skins, so I don't have a contract yet. I'm just playing things by ear. I don't worry about what I can't control. I love Washington. If the money's the same, I'll be here."

"I want to be here, and the Redskins have let me know they want me back, but we have a lot of cap trouble," Clark said. "We have to figure out a way to make something work that's in both of our best interests. The money doesn't even have to be equal. It just has to be close to what someone else offers for me to stay."

Royal will definately be back, nobody will pay for his..."contributions".
I think Clark will be back. He'd succeed wherever he went but I dont think he'd enjoy the success he does here anywhere else. I think he'd enjoy more success than Smoot has. He'll be back also.
Its good when you have guys who want to play for the team, I bet the defese would remain intact moreso than the offense. Although we have stars on defense I think as a unit its more cohesive. That can also be attributed to the fact that we haven't had any serious F/A splurges on defese in the past 2 years or so.

I'd like to keep both. royal had some tough times but began to show he can contribute hard down the stretch. I think our new offense, him and cooley can be deadly. As for Clark, the kid has a lot of heart and proved he can run with the best of them.
Don't matter where you are.... YOU'RE IN REDSKINS COUNTRY!

The System that Saunders brings in could help us or it might hurt us. Gibbs and Co. have had these guys for 2 years doing things one way, and now there is a new offense to learn, some players will learn quicker than others, some will feel the first system suited them better, I for one am glad we signed AL I just wish he could play WR.

I feel the same about Royal, in fact would like to see Johnson on the field as having a better upside; but like Clark enough to pay him a little too much. Good thing you're handling it, and not me.

I could be wrong about Saunders intentions and I think I definately worded my post incorrectly. Saunders isn't here to completely change the offense. However he's not here to sit in the background like Musgrave either.
He's going to enhance which is more than tweaking but less than overhauling.

The guys that we may be forced to let go may actually add more to our team than anything.
Robert Royal? Yes he was a starter, but I really feel like an upgrade at his position through the draft or even within ranks with Robert Johnson could prove valuable to our offense. This year's TE class is deep at first glance.
A quality guy may be around in the 3rd round.
If we lose Reynaldo Wynn that would hurt us from a leadership and experience standpoint, but we may also be able to find a lot more production in another player. Demetric Evans played admirably in his absence, and a guy like Tapp or Dumervill may be around in the 2nd round.
We may loose Thrash and Jacobs, but a guy like Maurice Stovall may be on the board at 53.
We never know, but we will keep the main nucleus of our team and actually find players who can thrive in a more dynamic system.

Thats about as loyal as you can ask for.
Yeah, I like the words, but I'll wait for the actions before I judge his loyalty. Not that he owes the Redskins any loyalty in any case.

Clark is the nicest Redskin aside from Marcus Washington that I've met. Im not talking about "hears your autograph buddy" type of nice but a genuwine down to earth person. Ive never met a football player who for the 10-20 seconds you get to greet him makes you feel like you're the only fan in a 20 miles radius.
That being said, I believe him 100%.
