Redskins first pick in the draft?

Derek Hagan

Wide Receiver | Senior | Arizona St.
Height: 6-2 | Weight: 202 | 40-Time: 4.54

Strengths:
Has solid size...Is a smart and cagey receiver who just knows how to get open...Runs good routes...Is more quick than fast...Tough and will lay his body on the line...Does a solid job of running after the catch...Never gives up on a play...Adjusts well to bad throws...Overachiever who gets the most out of his ability...Very productive...The type who does everything well but nothing great.

Weaknesses:
Does not have great pure speed...Is not a deep threat...Will still drop some catchable passes and hands are somewhat questionable...May have trouble separating from pro defensive backs...Is not a great blocker...Does not work the middle of the field much...May not have a lot of upside at the next level.

Notes:
An excellent college receiver who you have to temper your excitement about as a prospect due to his lack of ideal physical tools...Can be a great #2 receiver in the pros but to expect much more from him is probably being a little too optimistic.

Well, if his weakness's are those then I don't want the guy. I don't think they will draft a WR first, I think it will be a DE ot TE. I truly think they will address the WR position through free agancy. But we'll see what unfolds in the next few months.

Yeah, I agree with the sources Weakness': I don't think he has very much upside in the NFL.

He doesn't have speed, wont' really win the jumpball, doesn't go over the middle, and drops EASY passes.

I agree, with skinsRin, I think we'll solve the WR situation either through Free Agency, or later in the Draft (5th-6th round)

Yeah pass on him. I could live with lack of speed. But he has to be able catch everything.

Am I the only Redskins fan who thought Gardner was okay?

For God's sake, he had to learn 3 different offenses, catch passes from like 7 different QB's and had to do it all on pretty bad teams...

He dissapeared in crucial stretches, he wasn't a sure-thing when it came to pass catching and never really developed beyond his rookie year.

Yes, probably.

Gardner was one of those guys, where if you saw his height/weight... and his stats, you'd think he's good.

But that doesn't tell the story of how he was soft, not very fast, no seperation, couldn't win the jump ball, and it certainly doesn't tell you about his hands... 50/50 :shock:

This is a guy to look at in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th round...but I'd wait on him rather than reach for him.

I say don't draft a DE, or any particular position for that matter.

IMO, unless the guy is a RB, QB or some other more or less sealed position then go for the best available player.

DE is a need for sure, as is #2 WR (our most important need IMO) and so is TE, DT and others.

If a WR is there who is a better player overall than a DE then take him...

Who knows what coach Gibbs thinks would be a good value pick, but hopefully he can find a gem. He got Cool

ey in round 3 (though a lot of people knew he would be good) so maybe he has a knack for those early to mid round picks (time will tell if he has any success with late round picks.)

They do keep that stat, and from the 2004 season, both him and L.Coles were at/near the top of the list.

What do you mean?

Our first pick is in the second round, and later on in the second round...

I believe that only in the first round or early second round should you really draft for need.

The Redskins sort of need a WR, they sort of need Defensive line help, they sort of need a few things...

So why not just draft the best player available?

Would you draft Reggie Bush if you had the first pick? He seems to be the #1 pick on most boards. I would not pick him -even- if he is the best RB available in the draft. We are set with our current RBs.

The other element you seem to forget is that Free Agency both precedes and succeeds the draft. Some needs may be addressed after the draft. The point is that the Draft can not be considered in isolation. And even if you mistakenly do, it is the combination of best player -and- need that are at play.

Sf55 is saying you draft for need early on day one but after the first 40 or so players have been dratfed he would go for the best available player regardless of postion

I think you are.

Gardner's nickname, 50-50, was true. He would make some crazy acrobatic catches, but the simple hitches he'd drop. More than anything, that's what killed you with Gardner. The lack of consistentcy & concentration.
