What To Do With Dockery?
What should we do with Dockery? He has been a starter mainly because we have no depth at OG. If we let him sign with another team, we get a 3rd round pick in compensation since he RFA, but he has been touted by coach Bugel as the "O-Lineman with the most potential."
But the old adage is that potential is for people who haven't done anything yet.
What would you all do with Dockery? How about our other UFA's and RFA's.

Privately, I call him "Lurch". Not for any resemblance to the one on TV, but because of his false starts.
You'd think by now he'd be a little more broken in, but his progress is way behind what you'd expect of a guy of that size and apparent ability.
I think that, because of Ray Brown, we're stuck with him for another year or so. We're a little thin along the line, and we need to spend the money we don't have on pass rush and WR.

What has Dockery done wrong this year?
I didn't notice his usual rash of penalties this year. I was him blocking downfield. He's young, and cheap and a starter on a line that produced a 1500 yard runner and the 11th ranked Defense. I'm not sure what you want? Alan Faneca? Sure....but in our cap situation....I'll take Dockery!

He's very expensive and right now he is the weakest link on our line. I don't know what we should do but I hope that we can upgrade or renegotitate or something. We also really need some depth at OG because now that Brown is retiring we have nobody else who can play this spot. Actually, for some reason I think we're going to use our second rounder on a guard that can be molded behind him. I don't know why, it's just a hunch.

This is what teams do in the offseason. They evaluate their roster and decide if they want to upgrade. On our offensive line, Jansen, Samuels, Thomas, and Raybach are studs....Dockery is the weak link, so it's only reasonable to discuss what we might do with him considering a team would need to give us a draft pick to take him.

Watching this season, I do not recall that many false start penalties on Doc, last year, yes, he had quite a few. But this is a guy who was been in there since his rookie year, and for the last two years has been learning Gibb's scheme, and this year, did a good job. You really didn't hear his name called that much, which for an O-line man, is good, since that means they are not getting beat. I would definately keep him.

Expensive, are you kidding? He is due to make about .6 mil next year according to the salery cap table on the team info section of this site. For a starter thats insanely cheap. So yea, maybe he's worse than our other linemen, but that isn't saying much because all the others are near pro bowl quality or better. He is a reliable starter who has a huge upside. We should spend whatever money we have availiable to upgrade the D-line and of course WR.

We need dominance at his position, he's backup quality imo. If we can upgrade at the position after taking care of more important matters than I say lets do it. I feel that he doesnt have that mean streak about him, we dont need a teddy bear on a smash mouth line.

Are you sure we get a 3rd Rounder for him? I don't think we get a 3rd rounder just because we drafted him in the 3rd round...

Can he be convinced to be next year's Ray-Brown-multi-position O-line backup? He can play guard and, in a pinch, tackle. Raymer (despite his Seattle performance) can be servicable as the primary C/G backup.

Yes, he is a Restricted Free Agent and that is the rule for RFAs.

I agree...the only good solution to this problem is if he takes it upon himself to improve. Sad thing is, he has been working with Samuels for the past 2 years and he still is pretty shaky.
I think he has all the physical tools, but he needs that MEAN STREAK that he's gonna blow people off the ball, or pull around the edge and blow through somebody's earhole.
Right now he plays like kind of soft.

We are in 100% agreement. Nobody that big should be that soft. I dont know what its going to take to get him to become more agressive.
I think Jake made a good point about him being out of shape. Maybe he needs to shed some pounds, he has plenty to spare. Shed some weight to get his athleticism up and maybe his intensity too.

Before last weekend's games, the NFL Network ran a stat about O-lines with the fewest false start penalties. The Redskins were in the top 5. I don't think false starts are a problem with Dock or the other guys. (Frankly, I think Jansen probably has the most on the team.)
The other thing that really convinced me about the value of Dockery was the NFL Network HD Game of the Week recap on the Skins-Bucs playoff game. I didn't notice this when I watched the game or even on the first replay on the show. But then they showed an end zone angle of the Portis touchdown run. You can see perennial all-pro linebacker Derrick Brooks fill the hole which Portis is running to. Then you can see big ol' Dock come in and with his hands, shove Brooks out of the way, clearing the whole for Portis.
The guy's game has stepped up tremendously under Buges. I think there is no reason to make any change on the line next year. Bring back a healthy Randy Thomas and get some competent depth to replace Raymer and Brown.

Word um up. I like the kid, so does Bugel. Let's give him a chance. Let's try and keep the unit together.

Well said. Dock has started to show the play to go with the potential under Buges. IMO, he will be a force in years to come.

Why is this even an issue?
Dock two years ago was terrible. There was never a pocket and there were plenty of false starts. This year, penalties weren't a factor on the line, minus the Rabach holding penalty. For how predictable our running game is, how little respect our passing game is given, how much improvement he made over last year, how much potential he still has, and how little Dock makes relative to the rest of the league, he's a keeper in anyone's book, why not ours?
Let's focus on our passing game (whether it's QB, WR, or TE, that's another discussion) and other holes we're going to have to fill due to free agency and cap issues. Dock deserves at least a spot barring a significant upgrade (which is not even a question considering our other needs and our cap situation).
