Let Santana Return Punts!

Post by surferskin »

the more touches for #89 the better...it's playoff time and it's time to pull out all the stops. this could be very close game and could very well come down to special teams. santana had big punt return last year in the playoffs for the jets last year. i think we should take full advantage of our most dangerous weapon.

Don't think that is such a good idea. To much chance of his getting hurt returning kick-offs and punts. He is more valuable as the only legitmate receiving threat we have. It wouldn't be benificial for him to get punded on teh opening kick-off and not play the rest of the game.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

He only returns punts in "critical" situations which is a good thing. The only reason we have Antonio Brown is to return kicks and punts, although it would be cool to see what A Brown could do with the WR Screen.

Teams are anticipating it to Santana, how about A Brown on the screen, he might get some space.

I also think that if we ran the WR Screen out of the regular formation but have Brunell pump to Santana and have him release on a go route, that might catch teams off guard.

Philly jumped the route so hard that they almost picked it off, if the QB pumps to Moss and then hits him after he releases, I am pretty sure the corner would bite hard if they are playing press coverage.

i would call the first redskin playoff appearance since 1999 a "critical situation".

I would love to see it. Darrell Green used to do it. Anybody remember his 87 punt return td in Chicago to win that wild card tilt.....him clutching his ribs the last 20yds to the house.......i can envision Moss busting one in Tampa.......

I would ok it, but beware of the Jason Sehorn injury, you have a guy that is the absolute best player at his position maybe in the entire league and you put him out there to take on 11 guys running full speed trying to do nothing but take him out, nah let Betts return kicks whoever hits him takes punishment in doing so.

We still have to block for him and the blocking hasn't been exceptional. Antonio proved that if theres a crease he can take it all the way. I personally dont want Santana hoping back and forth trying to make something out of nothing for a LB just to come and tee off on him and lose him for the game. No thanks. Let AB return and get the blocking together. Plus we dont need Santana winded as soon as the offense is supposed to be back on the field. Lets not kid ourselves Santana is not the human joystick, the boy is a beast but thats not his niche.

I dont mind Moss on critical returns but when does it become critical? Hopefully we're never in that situation where a punt determines out fate.

Yeah true, but if we are winning 21-0 is it worth risking our #1 receiver like that.

Ok guys lets put the burgundy juice down for a second. We only have ONE WR. Thats right one. Mark Brunell doesn't throw the ball to Antonio Brown unless its a WR screen once every season. Thrash gets the ball thrown his way but clearly should be a 3rd/4th WR. Jacobs when he was getting open Brunell was throwing the ball the other way.
Santana Moss is our only WR, Im glad Gibbs isn't putting him at KR. Why?

Gruden: "SPECIAL TEAMS!!!" *grabs Stupid 5th string LB* "This may be the only play of your entire career, you can make the difference between us winning a SB or going home... I need you to go out there and annihilate Santana Moss, run his tail into the ground!"

Stupid 5th string LB: "ok coach"
3 minutes later......

Announcer: AND A BONE CRUNCHING TACKLE ON SANTANA MOSS, with laundry on the field!
Announcer #2: My goodness, Jim he's not getting up.
*after replay*
Announcer #2: Definately a helmet to helmet hit, what in the world was he thinking!

10 minutes later

Announcer: We're getting word back from the field that Santana Moss has a concussion and will not return for the rest of the game.
Announcer #2: Being that its only the 2nd quarter the Skins are in some serious trouble. All they need to do is key in on Portis.

did you forget that he's returned punts his entire football career (at every level)...it's not as risky as you're making it out to be.

i wouldn't want to take a chance unless we were down by several touchdowns and in the 2nd half.

but that scenario doesn't register.

But did you see my main point that we have exactly ONE WR. Do you want to risk our ONE WR on a fluke hit? We're not a ping pong team, this is football.

Ok so if we lose Santana with a concussion early in a game you'd think it was worth it? Its not worth it when we have a more than capable returner in AB and when we have reserved a roster spot for him specifically for that reason.

plus, you're making it sound like punt returners frequently leave games in bodybags...any player could get hurt anytime they step foot on the field but that doesn't mean you shouldn't exploit their talents. now, is no time to coach scared.

Theres nothing meek about it. If we had at least ONE other WR aside from Santana then it'd be less of a risk. How about you tell me how many #1 WRs that are a staple of the offense that are out returning punts? Is Marvin Harrison going to return punts this week? Galloway? C Johnson? Steve Smith? Who's the 2nd WR behind Steve Smith? Can you see Carolina winning without Smith and Proehl leading them past teams?

No guts no glory? No Santana no win.

Well I dont watch the panthers so I was wrong. But their WR depth is 3 times better than ours. How about the rest of the people I named?
Who do you see filling Santanas shoes if he gets hurt?
You're not proving the fact that its worth the risk. When Santana has returned punts he hasn't done anything with it while here. Why? Our blocking is inconsistent. Its a waste for now.

Gibbs must have more faith in the other WRs than you do because he has said all season that he would not rule out using SuperMoss as a return man. He said it before Patten went down and again sometime after Thrash returned. He said it would be a change of pace type thing.

On another note: CLL name a 5th string LB that can catch Moss, even eith Moss in front of him

Hey Im just saying that if this cat gets hurt its going to look mighty dumb on our part when we already have a capable return man on our roster. If we had consistent blocking I'd be all for it but why if he's not going to get much more yardage than AB? Why risk it?
No, Id love to see our WRs get in the game more, Ive been screaming about it but it doesn't happen. Our 3rd leader in receptions is CP. I think #2 is Cooley follwing behind Santana Moss at #1. None of our WRs are anywhere to be seen. Why? Im not sure.
