Vince Young - In the '06 NFL Draft?

Post by Texas Hog »

I think he'd be insane to stay in school. There are just too many bad things that could happen that are out of his control. Besides there is no way he could ever duplicate his performance the other night on such a grand stage. His value right now is as high as it's going to get.

He can always get a degree. I belive he is guarantted the #1 draft choice in the upcoming draft and would be a fool to pass it up.
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
We'll miss you, Joe.

I agree.
He might want that Heisman trophy though.

Alot of good the Heisman did Jason White, Eric Crouch, Chris Weinke, (dare I say) Danny Wuerffel, Charlie Ward, Gino Toretta, Ty Detmer and Andre Ware.
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.

. . .don't forget Ron Dayne, Ricky Williams, Charles Woodson, Eddie George, Barry Sanders, Tim Brown, Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, Marcus Allen, Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett, OJ Simpson, Roger Staubach, and of course, Steve Spurrier :puke: . . .

Anyway, my point is that you can't discount the Heisman based on a dozen names. There is a relatively high correlation between Heisman winners and success in the NFL--much higher than the average "good" player on a Div1 school.

Don't get me wrong. If I was Vince Young then I'd go for the NFL. Once a 1st round draft pick has a signing bonus, they've guarenteed themselves the chance to go back to school and finish a degree whenever they want (should they need to due to injury, etc.).

But, I'm also not a huge college football fan and don't have much stock in college football tradition. It might be worth a lot to him personally to go after the Heisman. I can't see calling him a fool if he decides to go for it (and finish his degree, help out the school to try and win another championship, etc.)

That being said, I expect him to enter the draft so that's how I voted.

I've got to go with TH on this one. Lienart won the trophy and the NCAA title last year and was where Young is now. He went back to school to try and win a 3rd title knowing he would be the #1 pick and could stay in Cali. One year later he is no longer the lock for the top pick that he was last year, he may not even go #2. He didn't get that 3rd title and no one is talking about the award he one last year. I think that is something Vince will look at before he enters the draft, but his stock will never be higher.

He should, and he will go.

Knowing Vince Young (well, I don't really know him, but by watching him on TV) he is totally full of himself and a total me me me player.

Even if he won't be the #1 pick, there's no way this guy is going to stay in school. He's going for the money.

I agree with the majority here. Other than finishing his education, this kid really has nothing to gain, in the sport, by staying in college. Now is the time to get out and capture the benefits of that magical game against USC.

Agreed -- if he were my son I'd say "Son, GO now, while the gettings good"

You're Casserly - what do you do with the #1 pick? Here's what I'd do...

Trade Carr for a first rounder (maybe get another pick later in the draft or in 07 too) -- Cowboys, Jets, Ravens, Lions, Miami, the list goes on...

1st pick -- take Young, he can avoid the rush (which is necessary in Houston), he's a local kid, and he's a stud.
1st round pick for Carr -- Draft an OL.
2nd round pick - Another OL
3rd round pick - draft a TE

Young, Davis and Andre Johnson with an improving line - not a bad future there. A good offense improves an average defense.

Interesting!

If he was MY son, I would say finish school and absorb all the psychologic maturity and intellectual preparation that your entire life and your sports life in particular will demand of you later on.

B. Leftwich semantic skills anybody?

RIC --

I would agree with you if Young was a freshman, or maybe a soph, but not a junior. Plus, he possibly had one of the best bowl games EVER -- his stock can't be much higher. While he's a big fella, his style of playing is one where a hit to the knee (like the Penn State linebacker this year or McGahee in his last bowl game with U Miami) isn't that far-fetched. A knee injury would limit his game and hurt his pro standing.

I've always said to my son, you go to college to a good or better job -- sometimes it's an accounting degree, sometimes it's a degree in Education to teach kids, other times it's to show your stuff on the field or court -- there isn't one thing wrong with that. I believe that's Young's situation.

Young seemed pretty darn mature to me during that game...
I nearly always think college b-ball players should stay in school as long as possible...the risk of injury isn't as great as football.

By the way, I have a son who's 17 and graduating from HS this year. He played soccer in HS and was an all-state goalie his senior year. He's good enough to play Div III. He could play Div II in a couple years and maybe for a small Div I in his 4th or 5th year of college. He knows he has no chance of making money at soccer so he isn't letting that get in the way of selecting a college. The good news -- he's smart like his mom...

Texas' Young reportedly turning pro

Fresh off a stirring performance in leading Texas to the national championship in the Rose Bowl, Longhorns quarterback Vince Young will forego his final year of eligibility and enter the NFL Draft, according to a report in the Dallas Morning News.

According to the report, there will be a Sunday afternoon press conference announcing Young's decision.

Poll

Young's godmother, Yolande Levine, told the Morning News that Young and Young's mother, Felicia, met with Young's pastor, Samuel H. Smith, in Houston on Sunday morning before finalizing the decision.

Young was on his way to Austin to meet with Texas coach Mack Brown to tell Brown of Young's decision, Levine said.

Young rushed for 1,050 yards, passed for 3,036 and accounted for 38 touchdowns this season.

Southern California quarterback Matt Leinart faced a similar choice after last season. With two national titles already won and a Heisman Trophy in hand, he stayed in college and brought his team all the way back to play for a third championship.

Young and Leinart talked about that decision at the Heisman ceremony in New York. Young said Leinart told him to "go with your heart."

With Young now expected to leave, Texas is left with a lot great talent around untested freshman quarterbacks.

Young's backup this season was fifth-year senior Matt Nordgren. The only other scholarship quarterback on the roster was freshman Colt McCoy, who didn't take a snap. The Longhorns expect to sign at least one quarterback this year.

Young's stunning performance against USC showed just how hard he'd be to replace. Not just his game-record 467 total yards and three touchdowns, but his intangible leadership in crunch time.

"He's the best big-game player I've ever seen," senior tight end David Thomas said.

Report: Longhorns' Young to declare for draftESPN.com news services

Longhorns junior quarterback Vince Young will declare for the NFL draft at a 4 p.m. news conference Sunday, his godmother told The Dallas Morning News.

Mel Kiper's top six players
1. Reggie Bush, USC RB (Pending Bush entering draft)
2. Matt Leinart, USC QB
3. Vince Young, Texas QB
4. Mario Williams DE, NC State
5. D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia
6. A.J. Hawk, LB, Ohio State

Young and his mother, Felicia, met with Young's pastor, Samuel H. Smith, in Houston on Sunday before making the decision, Yolanda Lezine told The Morning News

According to Lezine, Young was on his way to Austin to tell Texas coach Mack Brown his decision to go pro.

"After that performance in the Rose Bowl, I think we all kind of knew which way he was going to go," Lezine told the newspaper.

Team and league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the Texans will pass on Young, a Houston native, and select USC running back Reggie Bush with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, pending the formality of Bush announcing that he is turning pro.

Almost nothing will change that course, the sources told Mortensen.

The Texans will pick up an $8 million option on quarterback David Carr, who was the expansion team's first draft pick four years ago. Texans owner Bob McNair made the decision after getting extensive evaluations from various sources that strongly endorsed Carr, including a favorable report from Dan Reeves, the former longtime NFL coach hired last month as a consultant.

USC's Matt Leinart, who could have been the first pick a year ago had he turned pro after his junior season, still remains the consensus top quarterback in the NFL draft, even if Young comes out. For Leinart, he is likely to be the choice of the New Orleans Saints at No. 2 with Young projected to the Tennessee Titans at No. 3.

Steve McNair, who has been mentoring Young, including a visit to watch the Rose Bowl, will be lobbying the Titans to select Young with the third pick, Mortensen reported. Of course, McNair has to re-sign with the Titans for that to happen.

Leinart also would be desirable to Tennessee, where his former USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow is now calling plays for the Titans.

Young is UT's all-time leader in total offense (9,167 yards), career touchdowns (81) and career rushing touchdowns by a quarterback (37).

This season Young became the only player in NCAA history to pass for 3,000 yards (3,036) and rush for 1,000 (1,050) in one season. His 4,086 total yards are a Longhorns single-season record.

He won the Davey O'Brien Award for the nation's best quarterback and the Maxwell Award for the top college football player, but came in second behind USC running back Bush in Heisman Trophy voting.

You go to the NFL. You DO NOT risk a career ending injury, or any injury. You can always go back and get your degree, you cant always go back and be a top 3 draft pick.

I couldnt even fathom what it would be like to decide to go back to school, and then BAM tear your knee out or something. He won the National Championship, which should have been his main goal as a college player. Move on now....

Look at Leinert. He would have been number 1 last year. Came back, lost the championship, got his degree by taking ball room dancing and now will go at least number 2.

I voted declare of the draft, but he should use his signing bonus for tuition and finish school over the next couple of years taking night classes during the spring or something like that.

I'm always an advocate for staying in school. More NCAA experience translates in a better head for the NFL.

I still think Charlie Ward would have been a fantastic qb in the Nfl. He never even tried.
