Should we pull for Dallas or NY?
Whom do I want to win the NY/Dallas game? Sorry if someone has spelled this all out already but here it is.
Team W L Road NFC DIV
Dallas 7 4 3-2 6-2 3-1
N.Y. 7 4 2-3 6-3 2-1
Wash 5 6 1-4 5-2 2-1
Phila 5 6 1-5 2-5 0-4
Dallas plays
Dec 4 @ N.Y. Giants
Dec 11 Kansas City
Dec 18 @ Washington
Dec 24 @ Carolina
Jan 1 St. Louis
NY plays
Dec 4 Dallas
Dec 11 @ Philadelphia
Dec 17 Kansas City
Dec 24 @ Washington
Dec 31 @ Oakland
ASSUMING WE WIN OUT (please feel free to insert LOL but I'll be the optimist):
We go 10-6 with only 2 losses in the NFC and only 1 in the East. Philly would lose at least 7 and would be history. Dallas and NY would have at least 3 NFC losses and at least 2 division losses. We would sweep Dallas and split with the Giants so we win all ties. If NY beats Dallas, the Cowgirls have 5 losses and we give them their 6th. Bye bye. Same goes for NY if NY loses to Dallas.
WE CONTROL OUR DESTINY vs. the loser of the NY/Dallas game.
We need the winner of NY/Dallas to lose another game besides the one they lose to us.
Which is most likely to lose another?
They both play KC at home. NY plays Philly and Oakland and NY is better than both, but both games are on the road. Dallas gets the Rams and Dallas is better, plus it's in Dallas. On the other hand, Dallas plays Carolina

If we win out and we end up tied with either team at 10-6 we would hold the tiebreaker with both. Dallas because we would have beaten them twice and NY because our division record would be no worse than theirs and our conference record would be better.
So, I actually want the Giants to lose this week (notice I didn't say I want Dallas to win) because then if we win out we will beat them and they will have six losses. I want them to lose this week because their schedule over the last four weeks will probably not give them two losses.
Even if Dallas wins this week, if we beat them they will have five losses. Then they just have to lose to either KC or Carolina and they're 10-6 too. If we all end up 10-6 we have the tiebreakers so we would win the division.
So, in summary, I am rooting for the Giants to lose this week.

I will never cheer for any team other than the Skins.
As far as I am concerned, a Pyrrhic victory for either would be fine.
As far as I am concerned, a Pyrrhic victory for either would be fine.
Definition (for those that might wnat it)
A Pyrrhic victory (Pronounced pihrihk) is a victory gained with too great a cost, such that the overall situation becomes worse for the Pyrrhic victor than it was before battle commenced. Usually the phrase refers to a battle, but by analogy it can also mean any struggle (eg; "The football team gained a pyrrhic victory, they won the game but their best player broke his leg").
The phrase is a reference to King Pyrrhus of Epirus, who defeated the Romans at Heraclea and Asculum in 279 BC, but suffered severe and irreplaceable casualties in the process, going on to eventually lose the Pyrrhic War.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

Well said. I can't believe this even being discussed. A true Redskin fan ALWAYS roots for the Redskins and for whomever is playing the Pukes....regardless of any situation. This is Redskin law!

Suppose the pukes were out of the race and we were battling with the gnats for first place in the division. I personally would still be rooting for the gnats or philthy for that matter.
The next best thing to a Skin victory is a puke loss.

I'm rooting for Dallas (as hard as that is to say) Here's why:
Dallas at 7-4 plays NYG, KC, WAS, CAR, STL. I think Carolina and KC are possible losses for them, I think they'll be able to beat the Rams, and then obviously I'm hoping for the Redskins to beat them. If they beat the Giants, that would leave the 9-7, but even if they win one of the Carolina/KC games, they could finish 10-6 and we'd hold the tie breaker.
The Giants at 7-4 play DAL, PHL, KC, WAS, OAK. Since we have already lost to them once, we need to finish a game ahead of them. That means they need to lose three games. Dal, KC and Was represent their best chances for losses, they beat Philly easily, and then have to travel to Oakland but Oakland is beatable.
Of course, all of this is predicated on the Skins winning out. But that's my logic.
(I'm also rooting for Carolina to win against ATL & TB, but that's a separate analysis)

Well said. Dallas schedule is more difficult and I hate to say it but I will be rooting for the pukes this weekend.Skeletor wrote:I'm rooting for Dallas (as hard as that is to say) Here's why:

We don't have to finish a game ahead of the Giants, because if we win out and beat them, we will still go due to the better Division record. Therefore we can finish tied at 10-6 with NY, but winning out would make us the Champs because head to head would not break the tie, but division record would.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

Then if we had identical records, and split the head to head, then you would look to the divisional record, if that doesn't break the tie, then you go to conference record.
Still no luck? Then the cheerleaders mud wrestle.
If that doesn't work Daniel Snyder and Jerry Jones would play Paper, Rocks, Scissors.

They actually have (I believe) something like 10 layers of tie breakers for those situations. There will never be a true tie in a playoff berth competition.
EDIT:
Actually, I was wrong. There are 11 tie-breakers for teams within the same division.

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
5. Strength of victory.
6. Strength of schedule.
7. Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
8. Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
9. Best net points in common games.
10. Best net points in all games.
11. Best net touchdowns in all games.

Better? I don't know; in combination those two things are awesome but I took little comfort this past weekend knowing that Dallas lost. I'd rather see the Skins win.
You're right....I misspoke. Check the edit and thanks for bringing to my attention.

If we win out we win all ties in NFC East. This is all spelled out in original post of this thread.
We control our destiny vs. loser of NY/Dallas game.
We need the WINNER of that game to lose another game besides the game they hopefully lose to us.
