Losing is contagious...
There was hope for the season after the game against Philadelphia.
Then, with the blown lead against the Bucs and mouth-breathing Chris Simms, it began...
You know...
The Redskin Tailspin?
That moment during the early to mid-way point of the season that shatters the Redskins confidence and sticks in their minds for the rest of the year?
That one play that ends the season early and defines the loser mentality that this team has had for over a decade?
That instant where the Redskins begin to expect every break to go against them for the rest of the season, and sure enough...it happens that way?
So when Alstott scored the two-point conversion (did he?), the season ended.
The games against the Raiders and Chargers were just a big tease. It didn't matter that they had the lead for most of both of those games. It didn't matter that they had chances to win both of them.
We all knew what was coming..The annual disappointment.
Don't fool yourself, folks...this team was never a playoff contender. Finishing .500 will be a MAJOR upset now. Matter of fact, the way the schedule looks, the only two games they have left that are winnable are Arizona and Philadelphia, and both of those are road games...So we may have seen their last victory of the season already.
This team cannot finish an opponent off in a close game. And it's a combination of PATHETIC play-calling, PATHETIC execution on the field, and turnovers and penalties at times during the game when they are ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING.
These guys have no confidence in their capacity to win close ones. It's like they look around at each other, expecting someone else to make a play. No one is accountable, no one takes responsibility, no one wants the buck to stop with them.
Nobody is clutch. And being clutch is what ANY game or contest is all about.
It's a team full of guys who expect to lose. And until that MENTALITY changes, the ON-FIELD RESULTS will not.
So...Good season, guys. But not really.
Eight months to training camp. Already looking forward to it.
But not really.

I feared it then, but with continuing hindsight it's becoming 20/20 - Having the Bucaneers win stripped from them (blocked XP, stopping Alstott) was devastating emotionally for this club. Give them credit, for both the Broncos and the Chiefs games they played good enough to win and yet they still came back swinging. But finally after fighting their guts out in Tampa and having the game won, on road, to have that happen to them - That's a very difficult thing to deal with, to overcome. That's when I lost some (more) faith in the NFL and I'm sure that's when the team began to lose faith in themselves. This just isn't the same football team that we saw four, five weeks ago. On the surface things may appear mostly normal, but I think this is a ballclub that has had their heart broken....and they're playing like it.

Well aren't we all sunshine and gatorade ?

Agreed. Particularly the first line.

This might be the most well-written eulogy ever.

I've seen that in a movie, I think. You know, "Just kidding...but not really." Which one was it ? C'mon, man. It's gonna keep me up all night.

Dunno about the movie reference, tc. I may have heard it and stored it away in my subconscious. Guess it just fell out of a dark, unused corner of my brain.
Anyway...
I hope they get blown away in every game the rest of this season. I'm so tired of having them snatch defeat from the jaws of victory every week. One play here or there and it would be a different story (and a winning record). But I'm weary of having my hopes built up only to be dissapointed.
Honestly, they've been competitive in every game except for the "Win one for Mister Mara" game against the Giants, and true to form...they're finding new and inventive ways to experience crushing defeat week after torturous week.
This season has kinda been like being a kid and expecting Santa to put a shiny new bicycle under the tree for you...dropping hints to the parents starting around Halloween...being a good boy, eating your vegetables and saying your prayers...
And you wake up on Christmas morning, run to the tree and you discover...
New socks. And a new Bible from your Aunt Louise.
You can appreciate the effort, I guess.
But it's unsatisfying and just leaves you frustrated.
You'd rather have gotten nothing at all than...
THIS.

Brilliant, I couldn't of summed it up any better.

I have to disagree. Although the losses have been tough, the Puke game made my season. What a night! To snatch a sure victory from them on the 'ring of honor' enshrinement of the three amigos
was AWESOME! I haven't jumped up and down like that in years.
Being able to come to work and face all the puke fans was worth the entire season to me....and we still have a chance of beating them again.
To top that we finally beat Philthy as well.
Yea, we've lost some heartbreakers, but wouldn't it be nice to spoil some divisional rivals season?

God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
We'll miss you, Joe.

Three Amigos was Denver, I think.
The Dallas trio was the Stooges.
i find that offensive!
...because my fiancee's brother's wife is Curly's granddaughter (seriously!). how dare you desecrate the stooges by comparing them to the cowboys.

7-3 Cardinals with about seven minutes left in the second as I type this...
And this game is already over.
The Cardinals are doing everything they can to give this game away, but true to form...
No killer instinct from the Redskins.
No signs of wanting it more than the team they play.
Just content to go through the motions.
And Mark Brunnell is already thinking about whose hand he's gonna hold at the post-game prayer.
Thanks for the season-long tease, fellas.
Make sure you give us another one next week against the Cowboys...
How about having a 20 point lead in the 4th quarter and blowing it with about 16 seconds to play on a 73 yard touchdown bomb from Drew Bledsoe to Keyshawn Bigmouth?
That would make my season of Redskins football complete.
I hate my favorite football team.

Believe. . .
Nah, never any regret for me. Call it like I see it.
They're done. Even after Portis' touchdown.
And believe? Believe WHAT?
This team gives me no reason to believe anything...
Except that they'll find new and creative ways to rip my heart out...
Week after torturous week.
A loss to the Cardinals. Wow.
Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse in another non-playoff season.
