Special Teams

Post by USS Redskin »

One other topic I think contributed to todays loss - Special Teams play - or the lack there of.... Obviously Hall is not 100%.. his kickoffs were pretty bad. I am not sure he can hit a FG of over 45 yds right now.
Punting was horrible! The Raiders had great field position all flippin day. Frost blows.
How about the rookie kick returner? I couldnt believe they couldnt find someone else to put back there in this game.
Twice he fumbled but picked them up - boy, was he ripe to fumble one away.
Just beat Dallas - they are A-H****

I have to agree, they won the field position battle. We need a punter desperately. Were a team with a lot of needs and have very little picks. Hopefully we have the money to spend in free agency. Does anyone know if we have the cap to spend in free agency.

I agree with most of this but Parson was on the Practice Squad all year and was brought up to replace a hole at wide reciever, he may not have gotten much work returning punts in practice because no-one thought Thrash would go down.
Frost is definately not the answer

I say we get Tom Malone in the draft, and even if we must take him as early as the 3 round!! (Yes I'm serious)

Obviously Frost is a top 5 worst punter in the NFL and with Tupa's age/injury, his career is probably over.

And like we noticed today, Special Teams plays a vital role in the outcome of the game, and locking up a very good punter for the next 10-15 years in Malone is not a bad idea.

I disagree. In the first half they started on their ten yard line on every drive. In the second half our offense was pathetic and we were punting from our 20 yd line all day. Special teams alone cannot ensure good field position.

Parson worried me on those dropped kicks though but his 45 yd return was great.

Also, they have a great punter who kept booming unreturnable 50 yarders. It's hard to get good field position if the other team's punter is doing that to you all day.

The punting was not horrible. Frost put the Raiders in tough field position in the first half. For their first few drives, their average starting field position was the 13-yard line. Not too shabby if you ask me.

P.S. Cooley and Kozlowski were working on field goals before the game. Maybe that's a sign?

Cooley even connected on a 40-yarder.

I have to disagree. Frost has gotten some very good bounces, and sometimnes when you look at stats for punters, you get a distorted view of how effective they really are.
Frost had a couple inside the 20 yesterday, but at the end of the game, he was able to get no distance on his punts, and it set OAK up with great field position. That field osition led to a game winning field goal.
Frost will never rip one for 60 yards unless it goes 35 yards in the air and bounces 25 on the ground.
He is a liability, not an asset.

The first sentence knocked me back: "The Washington Redskins' league-leading kick coverage units "

Lordy, we're league leaders in something other than screw-ups! I do think special teams are way better than last year. Shame we don't get to kick off very often.

I actually liked Frost on that one kickoff in the Giants game. He kicked it inside the 5.
I would like to see him on kickoffs rather than Hall. Save the hamstring.

Yeah Frost did do a good job on the kickoffs.

Frost can not punt beyond 35 yards! Are you kidding me? He lost the battle for field position against the magnificent punter from Oakland hands down. Come on guys!

But then again, Why don't you read about it in the wondferful front page of this hard to find website TheHogs.net? The Exclusive Article The Fifth Quarter: Raiders says:

Special Teams:

Frost-y. Doesn't anybody else see what a handicap Derrick Frost is right now? The only good kicks he has are the ones that bounce twenty yards, but thank goodness he appears to get nearly every single fortuitous bounce. It was another stunning 36.2-yard performance... and that's gross yardage folks... not net yardage. Gross indeed. If the bounces ever stop going his way then he should be good for about a 20-yard average.

The only bright spot all day long for the special teams was a solid 35-yard return from Rich Parsons in his Redskin debut. Parsons proved he's worthy of the special teams' roster slot again next week.

Redskins Players of the Game: Raiders

Special Teams: Derrick Frost

Frost tied a career high with 3 punts downed inside the 20. Of those 3 punts, the Raiders average starting field position was about the 9 yard line.

Most of Frost’s solid punting came in the first half. As the offense became more anemic, Frost was forced to punt from deep in Redskins territory, giving the Raiders better starting field position. Despite that, only one punt resulted in a Raiders return in Redskin territory.

See what I mean?
You get a few punts inside the 20 and it looks pretty good on paper. But in reality, the guy has shown no leg whatsoever, and when you need a long punt, all he's going to give you is a frosty one. :puke:
Reggie Hodges did a pretty good job getting the ball inside the 20, but the Eagles cut him because he sucks. There's more to punting that stats. This writer obviously didn't watch the game.

I guess we'll just have to disagree. His poor punting at the end of the game created field position that led to the game winning field goal.

I mentioned in the end the field position late in the game.

Despite the close range of his 3 punts inside the 20, it's an improvement because he would usually punt them out of the endzone.
