Salary cap standoff

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Salary cap standoff

Post by skins81 »

The NFL had to reschedule their meeting d/t the death of Wellington Mara. The owners and players are still far apart. Apperently Tags has put a gag on the owners, and anyone who makes any public statement about the NFL collective bargaining agreement will be fined $500,000.

But does the salary cap work? Since it was instituted in 1994 just 10 years,
Green Bay went to 2 Super Bowls in a row, winning one 96-97
Denver went to 2 Super Bowls in a row, winning both 97-98
New England went to 3 Super Bowls in the last 4 years, winning 3 times from 01-04

Oakland went to 2 Championships in 3 years from 00-02
Pittsburg went to 3 Championships in 4 years from 94-97
Pittsburg went to 2 Championships in 4 years from 01-04
Philadelphia went to 4 Championships in 4 years from 01-04
St Louis went to 2 Championships in 3 years and won the SB once from 99-01
Tampa Bay went to 2 Championships in 4 years and won the SB once from 99-02
Green Bay went to 3 Championships in a row from 95-97

Baseball has no salary cap, so you would think you could just buy a championship, but the last five World Series champs have been
Chicago WHite Sox
Boston Red Sox
Florida Marlins
Anaheim Angels
Arizona Diamondbacks

Does this really work, or does it just make teams more susceptable to chance, eg an injury or a bad signing that has negative cap ramifications?

Personally, I don't think it works.
1) I think a team should get cap relief if a player is injured, and
2) I don't think rookie contracts should weigh so heavily on the cap. The players are unproven, so you don't know if you are getting a Peyton Manning or an Akili Smith.

I like the NBA's version of the cap, in which your players can sign a bigger contract with you than with other teams giving your team a chance to keep their players. I like the idea of exceptions to add free agents when they are available, and I like the idea, that if you are willing to pay the luxury tax, you can exceed the cap.

I do agree that the cap has made professional sports more of a business man's game than a sportman's game.
