Testaverde going to the Jets...again.

Talk about the AFC, NFC, the NFL Draft, College Football... anything football that has no Washington Football Team relevance.

Testaverde going to the Jets...again.

Post by Gibbs' Hog »

NEW YORK - Vinny Testaverde, who spent some of his best NFL seasons with the New York Jets, is set to rejoin the team to replace Chad Pennington, lost for the season with a shoulder injury.

The agreement was confirmed to The Associated Press on Tuesday by a person with knowledge of the deal, but who declined to be identified.

The Jets are desperate for a veteran quarterback with the loss of Pennington, and his backup, Jay Fielder, who also injured his shoulder after replacing Pennington in Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Brooks Bollinger, in his third season, was expected to start for the Jets in Sunday's game against Baltimore.

Testaverde, who started for Dallas last season, was at the Jets' training complex Tuesday morning for a physical. He was unsigned when this season began.

The agreement was first reported by Newsday on its Web site.

Testaverde, who turns 42 in two months, grew up a few miles from the Jets complex, and was with the team from 1998 through 2003, leading them to the AFC title game in 1998.

The first overall pick in the 1987 draft by Tampa Bay, he has played 18 seasons in the NFL with the Bucs, Cleveland/Baltimore, the Jets and the Cowboys. He is sixth on the NFL's career list of passers with 44,476 yards

I guess the idea of trading Ramsey is out of the question, for now!

Yeah! I mean, no one else possibly believed they'd sign their recently out-of-work former starter as a backup.

Still, it was a pretty good call, in my opinion. The Jets didn't have to bring Vinny in--he's recently out-of-work for a good reason!

But it will be interesting to see how this plays out for them. Jets fans can't be very optimistic about the rest of this season.

On SportsCenter Herm Edwards hinted that they had talked to various teams about QB (including The Skins) but he wouldn't officially confirm it.

Personally I do not want him to go unless its a "give me an offer I can't refuse" scenario. But Ramsey probably has pretty low trade value considering its his last year in his contract, and everyone knows we think he sucks because he only got 3 series. (Kind of like the Rod Gardner scenario, I mean his value straight up is higher than 6th round, but considering the circumstances he went cheap)

But hopefully Patrick Ramsey ends the 05/06 season in the Burgandy and Gold.

We were playing Rod Gardner, he just wasn't performing. It isn't that he's not getting his chances (as one could say in defense of Ramsey and estimating his value), it's that he wasn't consistent here for 4 years.

Carolina is learning that the hard way--giving up a 6th round pick for a player that (as far as I know) hasn't contributed at all to their offense this season.

True, I mean the only thing Rod Gardner has done for them is catch a TD over Ade Jicrap, and quite frankly my grandma couch catch a TD over that fool.

Has Gardner even been on the Active Roster at all this year? I know he wasn't for the first game.

gardner's stats page on NFL.com currently lists him as appearing in one game so far in 2005, with 0 catches.

And that one game that Rod Gardner appeared in.......he dropped a pass. They were at the goal line and they hit a fade route to him in the end zone. He jumped and dropped it. Just thought you all would like to know.

Ramsey has 1 year left after this season.
I can't think of a scenario that would have us give up our #2 QB in a league were there are very few QB available that can come in and help a team if the QBs on the Roster go down.
The quarterbacks on the market are either old guys that are pretty much done and young guys that never did anything.

I'm sure there is a "offer I can't refuse" scenario out there I just can think of a realistic one

C'mon, cville ! I live in New York. There was nothing about Vinny in any of the papers on Monday, nor did Mike and the Mad Dog spend any time on it.
I just figured they'd go with him.

Why no consideration for Quincy Carter? He played very well for the Jets last season (98.2 rating in 7 games and 3 starts).

Can we once and for all put to rest the idea that Ramsey is in a contract year?? :x

He's a free agent after NEXT year. Right?? 8-[

Because we have 2 QBs that can play now and one in waiting. We are the source they all come to before trying to gat a player. Vinny C. felt they should pass on Billy, so they called Vinny T.

Jets' Pennington Has Shoulder Surgery

The Associated Press
Friday, October 7, 2005; 4:06 PM

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Jets quarterback Chad Pennington underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder, and the team is optimistic he will be ready for the 2006 season.

The surgery was performed Thursday by orthopedist Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., the team said Friday.

Andrews repaired a small rotator cuff tear, the anterior capsule and labrum. Pennington will begin rehabilitation immediately.

"He's fine. He's upbeat. He's good," coach Herman Edwards said.

Pennington was injured Sept. 25 against the Jacksonville Jaguars when he was sacked on consecutive plays. This is the second straight season the sixth-year player has torn his rotator cuff. Last season, Pennington tore it in November but returned to lead the Jets to the playoffs.

"I think he thinks in his mind that whatever it takes to come back, he is going to do," Edwards said. "So, that's his mind-set. It has always been his mind-set. That's what makes him so special."

Edwards said the team still hasn't decided whether to put Pennington on injured reserve, which would end his season. He plans on meeting with Pennington and team doctor Elliot Pellman to determine a recovery period.

When he was asked about Pennington's status for next season, Edwards also hedged.

"I'm optimistic, " Edwards said. "I've kind of talked to him, but I'm waiting to visit with Chad when he gets here, sit down with doc and round-table with those guys. I rather talk to Chad face to face then through the phone."

The Jets also must consider the financial ramifications. The Jets signed Pennington to a seven-year, $67 million deal before the start of last season. He received an $18 million signing bonus and another $2 million guaranteed, and is due a $3 million roster bonus in March.

Pennington is scheduled to count $15 million against the cap in 2006, but that is almost certain to be restructured.

Backup quarterback Jay Fiedler is also out with a shoulder injury, but the Jets anticipate he may be able to return this season. Without Pennington and Fiedler, the Jets have turned to 41-year-old Vinny Testaverde, who will start Sunday against Tampa Bay.
