Burnell makes very slow decision?
You guys noticed that Burnny takes forever to make his reads and just sits in the pocket. Either Dallas had amazing coverage or Burnell really make super slow reads,
Also notice how he always made 7-9 step drops. He moves 7-11 yards back just to make 5-10 yard throws and still doesn't have much zip on passed between 12-20 yards, unless has room to use all his might.

i think he makes reads fine. theres no need to rush it if the line gives you stellar protection like they did on those two td throws. granted he got sacked 5 times, i still believe the line did a great job giving him time to find his receivers.
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

Let's not forget Dallas has a good D. As far as his ability to throw the 20 yard pass, that should be the easier throw. Maybe our receivers are smaller and they don't get open in the middle. Almost everytime we threw deep we had someone open. He missed each receiver deep at least once but he completed the most important ones.

Dropping back in the pocket is designed.
You have 3 step drops (quick reads like slants, quick outs, hitches, hooks)
You have 5 step drpos (mid range patterns like drags, in-routes, posts, pump-and go)
You have 7 step drops (deep routes, post corners, go routes, deep posts)
Then there are sprint out drops, waggles and roll-outs where you go to a certain place on the field.
Thats why timing is so important. The footwork of the QB, and how quickly the receiver gets in and out of routes have to be in sync. If not, it throws the whole thing off. Brunell is taking the steps as designed, but if no one is open or if the timing is off between him and the receiver then he has to either run, buy some time, throw it out of bounds or take a sack.
It should get better as the season goes along. If we get it all in order, this offense can score a good deal of points.
SPIT HAPPENS!!

Agreed....Gibbs said something in the post-game interview about the one long pass early in the game that Moss almost scored on. Shotgun formation, he said the snap was a little to the right which caused Brunell to reach to his right and put his timing off just slightly. Slightly is all it takes in the NFL.
Beat Dallas!!!

The line played great and almost all of the sacks Brunell took were on him for holding the ball to long or not reacting to a blitz that everyone in the stadium new was coming. Brunell had all of the negative plays that people get on Ramsey for but got lucky with two passes and had a hell of a scramble. But what the the hell...
THE SKINS FINALLY WON A GAME AGAINST DALLAS.
I guess if the Defense is good enough to win when our QB only make 3 plays then I'll take it!

Two TDs kind of beats out 1 pick
He didn't allow the pressure, but he needed to make a better play than back-pedaling ten yards. Part of the reason we like Brunell is his mobility, correct?
To say that Brunell had a great game Monday just isn't accurate. What should get us so excited is that he made two incredible passes, passes we weren't sure if he still had in him. But make no mistake, this is something to build on, not stand on and be satisfied.

yeah, only two.
1. allowed himself to take a sack that pushed us back out of field goal range
2. incomprehensibly horrible interception

Agreed he didn't have to drop straight back but again you can't put the sack on him, the additional loss yardage maybe.

Wasn't a great game by a long shot. It was a 14-13 win witch equals just enough to win. We should expect more out of this team and I do. Brunell still has to get some timing down and the bye week should help. Knowing he can throw the deep ball is great, having DBs not dare you to beat them deep is better.
Hope we get there

actually i'm a pretty happy fellow. i just got engaged to a wonderful, beautiful woman! anyways, i'm not saying he made enough mistakes to give them game away per se, just pointing out that he did make two key errors-- the kind that ramsey would be being bashed relentlessly for. i don't care if he throws 17 interceptions and gets sacked 25 times a game as long as we win. but, it was definitely a mistake not to just throw the ball away when that sack was coming.

And get flagged for intentional grounding??? We'd have still lost yardage, or, in his desperation, he might have thrown a pick.
Overall, Brunell "managed" the game well for 55 minutes (despite the INT), and "won the game for us in the final 5 minutes.
We can't overlook a couple of things, IMO:
1) On the plays where Brunell got sacked, very few featured a spread formation. Dallas was bringing the heat, and we had, at best 1-2 receivers for Brunell to throw to. It was reminiscent of last year. Once they spread the field out a bit in the second half, the results improved.
2) Our special teams could have been better. Groom was great during the preseason, but he is not the punter Tom Tupa is. While Dallas kept pinning us inside our 5 througout the night, on more than one occasion, Groom managed to keep them at or near the 20. Field position is key.
Back and better than ever!

I completely disagree. Almost all the sacks were jail breaks up the middle. The Cowboys would get one DE to rush out wide and the DT next to him to push over to the middle and EVERY time a huge hole would immediately open up and a blitzer would rush straight through unimpeded to the QB. This is exactly how Ramsey got hurt too. Since we seem to ALWAYS want to run between the tackles they could do this and tee off knowing that if a running play was called the blitzer would also be free in the backfield to make the easy tackle.
We have a big weakness with our blocking scheme and two opponents in a row have now exploited this to great success. I went back and watched the MNF game and I noticed that other than the two bombs every good play that Brunell made (and there were a few) happened when he rolled out of the pocket. Because they regularly blitzed straight up the middle they couldn't contain him and it was easy to avoid the rush when plays that required him to roll out were called. In addition, by doing that 5 or 6 Cowboys would immediately be taken out of the play as they would all be in our backfield.
I was also very pleased with how well Brunell did rolling to his right and throwing across his body. He made a few really nice plays this way including the 41 yd bomb to Moss along the right sideline. That shows a lot of armstrength and I think those plays really fooled Dallas. I think one way to prevent guys just rushing up the middle would be to call more designed roll outs and stretch running plays. Our passblocking really has to be tweaked though too, our guards seem to get really confused and take the wrong guy off the snap and this is what allows these huge blitzing lanes to develop. Our guys are terrible at picking up delayed blitzers too, they have to learn to see these guys and move over in order to at least slow the guy down. However, I do not think that Brunell held the ball too long, on most sacks the guy was on him in just a second or two, he had no chance.

Good take hkHog,
I was at the game, and Brunell made some real fine throws when he had the chance to. In fact, he completed the majority of the down field throws and just barely underthrew a TD in the first half (inches), with the int the only real bad play.
Our O-Line didn't help him much either, as the Dallas D-Line was doing a good job controlling the line all night...Portis was effectively shut down, making it that much more difficult for the passing game. 5 SACKS is horrible.
Brunell did a fantastic job in my opinion, and equally deserves the NFC player of the week as much as Moss.
In the first half, the conservative play calling was way too predictable, and responsible for the lack of offense more than anything Brunell "didn't do".
4th and 15.....39 yard TD pass right on the money? Followed by a 70 yard bomb perfectly thrown? NOBODY can argue with that.
Keep in mind, Brunell threw for 325 and 2 TD's against Dallas last year as well.
And, when was the last time we saw Ramsey scramble for 25 yards (being 10 years younger)?
Before the game, several cowboy fans said they'd rather face Ramsey......after the game ALL of them wished Ramsey had played.

boy,as the week goes on, brunnel's performance gets better and better. by the 'hawks game, he'll have played a perfect game.
i understand all of ramsey's faults and all, but why is it when he takes a sack it's because he's a statue, but when brunnel takes one, it's because the o-line screwed up?
* please note that i am not advocating for the return of ramsey here. despite the feeling that i would have liked to have seen once and for all what he can do over the span of 4 or 5 games, i believe continuity is best for this team, which is why brunnel should start. i'm just chuckling to myself at all the double standards that are floating around the board.

Rockin' the tables, rockin' the mikes, rockin' the young lay-dees.
I think that that's because Ramsey does take a lot of sacks where he is a statue. He would have taken more than five on Monday. The Dallas D line played very well. I'm just saying that the sacks Brunell took weren't from just hanging onto the ball. There were a couple that were on him though when he fell but that was because he was trying to drop back and there were guys blowing through the line (it'd easier for defenders to run forwards than for a QB to run backwards). He was by no means perfect but when you examine his performance over the ENTIRE game he was pretty good.

I agree, Brunell did manage the game well, but our O just couldn't perform, I guess Bunny just needs time with the first team.
But Dallas did out play us in the trenches both on offense and defense. They had a better game plan for GW blitz packages and their jail break blitzs up the middle and Safety blitz did hurt us. Just glad about the W, but those are heart wrenching games to watch, really difficult when our O does not produce.

That's not him, that is the way Gibb's offense is designed. He's doing what he is supposed to do. Go back and look at Rypien...
Ok thanks, just cause I didn't really remember Ramsey dropping back so far in the 06' preseason. Go Skins
I would like to see a lil more zip on the back, his age is showing alil, but as long as we win..
