It's been 4 years...

It's hard to believe it's been 4 years since that horrible September 11, 2001. Let's not forget - observe a moment of silence 8:46 a.m. the time the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

I think it's even more important this year that we remember. There are other national affairs going on but we can never forget Sept. 11th. Thanks for posting this Terri!

I read the 911 Heroes Comic Book to my son this morning... it sits in my living room on display all year round... and it's a reminder for myself & a learning experience for my 3 boys that there are real Heroes out in the world and that we're all lucky to have the security & freedoms we have because of them....

No... myself, nor my children will never forget...

8:46 a.m. 9-11-01 I was having a conversation with a young man that didn't want to talk to me to start with.
When he said a plane had hit the first Tower, I didn't believe him. I saw the second Tower get hit. Sometimes I still don't believe it. But I'll never forget the act or how I felt.

NFL to recognize fourth anniversary of Sept. 11

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Aug. 30, 2005) -- The NFL will remember the tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001 and salute the spirit of America with a special nationally televised live tribute prior to the start of the nine 1 p.m. ET regular-season opening games on Sunday, Sept. 11.

"America the Beautiful" will be performed by Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey from FedEx Field in Landover, Md. at 12:58 p.m. ET, prior to the Chicago Bears-Washington Redskins game. Their performance will be televised nationally by CBS and FOX and also be seen by fans on in-stadium video screens at the other game sites.

This national salute will be followed in each of the nine stadiums with the playing of the national anthem as part of special on-field activities.

Details of local club tributes that day will be announced shortly.

UGGGHHH I am not happy with the NFL's observation of this event. Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey?? Come on, they could have done much better then that.

I remember where I was on Sept. 11th too. Jackson was only a few weeks old and I was sound asleep at my mother in law's house because Jackson had a drs appt. That day was scary and hard for everyone but with the hormones I had raging, I also did not believe the news when Scott's step-father told me. He had to drag me to the television to show me. For the rest of the day I don't think I put my child down. The rest of the day we spent telephone tag with everyone in our family. My brothers work construction and had been in D.C on that day. It took us forever to find them and verify they were not working at the Pentagon. And those hours were horrible. I cannot imagine the hours and or days that my fellow Americans went through trying to locate their loved ones. And the people who were there to help them are all heros. Your post gave me chills Danny. I'm glad you teach your children but I'd also like to know about the comic book, as this is the first I've heard of it. You can PM me info or maybe post it here so other people can use it too! ;-)

Oh no it's not about that. It's just that it's as commercialized as it possibly could be. I'd rather have someone who means something sing it. I'm sure there is someone out there that is a survivor of the tragedy that could sign or something more significant.

You can go here and see all the pages (3rd comic down) http://www.authentichistory.com/images/ ... cs_01.html

it came out about a month after 9-11...

you'd probably have to search on e-bay or somewhere to find it now... but it gives the kids a good realization of what true heroes are while keeping them interested with fictional ones...

See:

http://www.tunneltotowersrun.org./index.html

I had hoped to walk / jog it this year. Firefighter Stephen Siller was driving home to Staten Island that morning, having finished an overnight shift in Brooklyn. He turned his truck around and drove to the entrance of the Battery Tunnel, which was closed to anything but firetrucks and ambulances. He got on his gear, about 80 pounds of it, took his helmet, and began running through the Tunnel until a firetruck stopped amd carried him to the WTC. He never came back.

Another person you might remember is police officer John W. Perry. In addition to being a policeman and a lawyer, he was an actor and playwright. That morning, he was at 1 Police Plaza to resign, because he wanted to work fulltime in the theater. When the first plane hit, he looped his badge over his neck, and ran to the WTC. Like Siller, he never came back. Some of his friends have left Officer Perry's website just as it was that morning. Take a look, at:

http://www.johnwperry.com/index.html

Then, of course, there was Father Mychal Judge, a chaplain to the NYFD. One story is that Father Judge was hit by debris while kneeling to administer last rights to one of the victims.

There are so many others, famous or not, who deseve to be remembered. I'll stop with these.

I will never forget. The World Trade Center was a popular destiantion for class trips here by me, and the last time that I'd been there actually was a class trip.
I arrived at the site around just before midnight on the 12th, and spent nearly 400 hours (ten at a time) there over the next month and a half.
I was there for a few of those choreographed celebrity/politician moments, but none were as inspiring or heartbreaking as the bucket brigades or the times where the world stopped turning- when a person was recovered. I remember being amazed at the naivety of those still frantically searching for sounds of survivors three weeks into the efforts. I remember the families walking around with photos, asking if we'd seen so-and-so who might be somewhere walking around, having lived but suffering from amnesia. I remember the white dust blanketing everything. I remember seeing these huge dually wheels and wndering if it was from one of the planes.
Mostly, I remember this. While waiting for my first assignment (My job was to transport the emergency personnel from the pile to their respective station/precincts, and bring in fresh guys), a really grimy, dusty fireman asked me if I would take a picture for him. He handed me a disposable camera. I thought it was a little funny, but agreed. He gathered some other firemen together, and used a truck for the background. They were standing too far apart for me to get them all in the frame...like, an arms length between them. I asked him to squeeze in closer.
He said, "No. We're saving room for the six guys missing. Take the picture twice, if you have to."
"Are they coming ?", I asked.
He nodded towards the pile, and said, "Probably not."
"Sit back and watch the Redskins.
SOMETHING MAGICAL IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!"
