Hognostications: Weeks 1-17 (and rankings)
Those of you who are smart enough to consult the main page of this site might have read Hognostications. These are predictions made by informed staff members. This week is Frank Hastings turn. I agree for the most part -but- ...
(this is a dreaded word in the diplomatic and debate world)
... some of you might feel different in some cases. I do feel different in relation to some games. So here it goes, feel free to add your predictions. But be honest to keep your own score over the -entire- season!!! No editing or deletions of posts are allowed.

Oakland at New England
Pick - Raiders
My Pick: Raiders.
I agree. Norv, Collins, Moss and Co. are a good mix.
Houston at Buffalo
Pick - Texans
My pick: Bills.
Buffalo plays at home and Musgrave had them going in the right direction at the end of last season. Houston will not be able to stop the running game.
New Orleans at Carolina
Pick - Panthers
My pick: Panthers.
Panthers DL is too much to handle for the Saints.
Cincinnati at Cleveland
Pick - Bengals
My pick: Bengals.
I agree but mainly because Browns has a new DL and the new coach needs more time (sounds familiar?)
Seattle at Jacksonville
Pick - Jaguars
My pick: Jaguars.
This is easy. No more said.
New York Jets at Kansas City
Pick - Chiefs
My pick: Chiefs.
They play at home and the Jets are way OVERRATED.
Denver at Miami
Pick - Broncos
My pick: Dolphins.
I disagree. Miami will pull it out with a good headcoach and a hungry team looking to improve. The snake will disappoint again.
Tampa Bay at Minnesota
Pick - Vikings
My pick: Vikings.
Team to beat in the NFC North.
Tennessee at Pittsburgh
Pick - Steelers
My Pick: Steelers.
Too much to handle by the dismantled Titans leftovers.
Chicago at Washington
Pick - Redskins
My pick: Redskins!
No doubt about it.
Green Bay at Detroit
Pick - Packers
My pick: Lions.
Favre may prove me wrong. But he needs company and he may not have it. Upset against historic odds.
Arizona at Giants
Pick - Cardinals
My pick: Cardinals.
Coach Green is working his magic withe future NFC West Champs.
Dallas at San Diego
Pick - Chargers
My pick: Chargers.
The new 3-4 D. scheme comes down in flames!
St. Louis at San Francisco
Pick - Rams
My Pick: Rams.
49ers wished they had Jerry Rice back out of retirement.
Indianapolis at Baltimore
Pick - Colts
My pick: Ravens.
Ravens D. will apply enough pressure on P. Manning to sack and intercept him.
Philadelphia at Atlanta
Pick - Falcons
My Pick: Falcons.
No C. Simon + Same M. Vick = Falcons win.

Anybody smart enough would have put this in the game day section since it basically has EVERYTHING to do with Game Day... and doesn't focus on the Redskins...

i'll have to work out my weekend predictions later but wanted to make my pick for tonight before i go to work to make sure no one says i'm cheating.
New England wins
i think if the pats do fall off this year, they will at least start strong. anyone remember the year after their 1st superbowl? they absolutely crushed pittsburgh in week 1, looked like they would easily waltz back into the superbowl. but somehow they faltered just enough as the season progressed to miss the playoffs (despite a 9-7 record).
of course, i think the next year they got stomped 31-0 by the bills... but that was after the non-playoff season. plus, the raiders don't even have any defensive players. they forgot to sign any, being so busy concentrating on offense. the pats are going to line up, snap the ball, and walk into the endzone because there won't even be any players on the other side of the field.

1 for 1 so far! now i will waste a bunch of time with my picks for the rest of the games:
Houston at Buffalo:
Texans-- the rest of buffalo's team is quite good and will probably prove me wrong, but this is Losman's 1st NFL start.
New Orleans at Carolina:
Carolina-- Aaron Brooks is the most unfocused QB in the NFL (especially considering how talented he is). the tragedy in NO will either give him magic powers this season, or make him even worse. my guess is, worse- but i hope he proves me wrong.
Cincinnati at Cleveland:
Bengals-- the Browns are one of the 3 worst teams in the NFL
Seattle at Jacksonville:
Jaguars-- Seattle never had any defense anyway, because Ray Rhodes is a terrible defensive coordinator nowadays. apparently he is sick and won't make it to the game. maybe his assistant will call good defensive plays instead, in which case they should win. but they will probably go with Rhodes' same system i'm sure.
New York Jets at Kansas City:
Chiefs-- this was a tough one to pick. maybe it's just my anti-coles bias. but i feel like the chiefs D will want to make a big statement.
Denver at Miami:
Broncos-- Dolphins are also one of the 3 or 4 worst teams.
Tampa Bay at Minnesota:
Vikings-- i wanted to find a reason to pick against the favorites, but really they should be a better team than TB.
Tennessee at Pittsburgh:
Titans-- Steelers offense could be a mess. No RB, QB playing like crap. i just see them as being primed for a fall this season-- at least in the early season. maybe they make a late-season push. this is probably a dumb pick since the titans have no players left. but you gotta go for some upsets!
Chicago at Washington:
Redskins-- duh! we are simply a much better team. rookie Orton will wish Grossman never got injured.
Green Bay at Detroit:
Packers-- they won't be any good this season most likely, but Detroit's starters looked abysmal when i saw them in preseason. like they were just completely embarassed to even be on the field.
Arizona at Giants:
Giants-- Kurt Warner has some tremendous gifts and some glaring weaknesses. The Giants have always played him well, and now they know all his weaknesses intimately.
Dallas at San Diego:
Chargers-- Dallas will either get off to a fast start then fall to crap, or start like crap and come together later in the season, then tank it right at the end (a la bledsoe in 2004). seems like it ought to take some time to get the 3-4 really working though, so i'm going with chargers. this was a hard one to pick since i hate Schittenheimer almost as much as i hate dallas!
St. Louis at San Francisco:
Rams-- 49ers are one of the 3 worst teams.
Indianapolis at Baltimore:
Colts-- i'm tempted to pick the Ravens because the D might have a good game against manning. but, living in maryland, i got all the Raisins preseason coverage and Boller is simply terrible. he will never be a good NFL QB.
Philadelphia at Atlanta:
Eagles-- here's the problem i see for atlanta: each team's D practices against a great scrambling QB every day, so they know how to handle that. given that both teams have good defenses and great "short games" (the falcons are a much better running team, but philly uses short passes instead of the run very effectively), the deciding factor comes down to passing. mcnabb is just a better passer at this point than vick. i dont see vick having much luck against philly's secondary. i hope he proves me wrong!
Houston at Buffalo:
Texans-- the rest of buffalo's team is quite good and will probably prove me wrong, but this is Losman's 1st NFL start.

Congratulations to hkHog, FFA and dcd. You got it right last night. Brady had ALL DAY to throw yesterday. Sapp was nowhere to be seen to apply any pressure.
I still refuse to jump into the three-peat slogan used for the Pats by many commentators. The Raiders simply gave too much time to Brady to pick them apart.
Ah! but the rest of the schedule is not played yet...
There are plenty of chances for JSPB22 and I to catch up
(or make the gap between us bigger
).
So far:
hkHog 1 - 0
FFA 1 - 0
dcd 1 - 0
JSPB22 0 - 1
RiC 0 - 1

Cincinnati at Cleveland
Pick - Bengals ... sigh ... Browns are my AFC team
Seattle at Jacksonville
Pick - Jaguars
New York Jets at Kansas City

Pick - Redskins: more officially: Skins 24, Bears 6 (defense scores a TD on one of Orton's three INTs)

Indianapolis at Baltimore
Pick - Colts
Philadelphia at Atlanta
Pick - Eagles (I'm saying now the TO/McNabb drama ends by week 3)

OK, How should we count a prediction for yesterday's game made today?

The rest is fine!

I will try to do the tallying week after week.

I should have known better than to pick a Turner coached team. The play calling cost the Raiders that game if you ask me. Norv, ever heard of ball control? The running game was there, the game was close and you're airing it out against a team you can't stop? I predict Norv will be discussed as a coach on the block by season's end.
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
We'll miss you, Joe.

I could not agree more. This guy D. Branch is GREAT and HUMBLE! Totally unheard of in today's prima donna WRs.
Hey, you still have the rest of Week 1 on Sunday and Monday!
