Service Announcement to People in Cars

Post by Redskins1974 »

I just wanted to tell people that when driving, please pay attention to your surroundings. I was riding my bike last Thursday and was clipped by a car and run off the road. The person did not stop to add insult to injury. After coming to my senses with blood everywhere, I was able to call my wife as I was pretty close to my house. Luckily a cop showed up rather quickly, followed by an ambulance. Needless to say, an ambulance ride later and a trip to the emergency room, I had 23 stitches in my forehead, some major road rash on around and below my left eye and lip, among other places. I may have a broken nose and damage to the orbital bone around my eye as well. The swelling was too bad initially so I have to go back for an X-ray tomorrow. I am getting better.

We’re all guilty at times of not paying attention while driving but please, PLEASE, if you’re driving, try to be aware that you’re in control of a vehicle that weighs several tons and there are people on bike’s an motorcycle’s on the road. Don’t get ultra aggressive and ride a motorcycle or bike’s ass. Don’t assume that a bike or cycle can see you. Two people just died near Purcellville on the WO&D bike trail last week when a car failed to pay attention and ran them over at a car crossing. I friend of mine was killed on a bike around the corner from my house 3 years ago when a car cut him off and he went head first into the side of the car. I’ve known many more that have taken nasty spills as a result of cars. Furthermore, I’ve known several people to have been seriously injured on motorcycles, again, as a result of a larger vehicle failing to pay attention.

I don’t plan on not riding my bike anymore. I grew up riding and will never stop. However, if idiots don’t start paying attention when they’re behind the wheel, the next time I may end up dead. I’m really lucky I didn’t get hurt worse.

That’s my soapbox for the day. Thank You.

Oh no 1974, I hope you get better soon. You have some partying to do at the game! ;-) Hopefully all the xrays will be negative.

I'm probably guilty of not paying great attention all the time, although I've never run anyone off of the road. It sucks that the person left you like that, hopefully they can find the person and punish them!

Oh, if that happens to me again and I'm not injured, that person and/or their car is going to take some punishment, lol.

Thanks for the well wishes. I do appreciate it... Everyone's guilty of it when they're behind the wheel at times. Just try and keep an eye out folks!

Heal quick brother! Sorry for the bad news - I will try to SHARE THE ROAD.

I have been run off the road in the past - usually when running - 18 wheelers can pack a big wind gust when the blow by going 60 mph, normally a beer bottle follows - %@#$@#$%!

I'm sorry to hear that, 1974. That's horrible. I'm glad you survived it.

Your lucky your injuries weren't any worse.

I hope you're going to be in game shape on Sunday, though.

I'm sorry to hear about about your accident there. I'm glad you're not hurt any worse then what you are. About the W&OD trail.....I know exactly what you're talking about. I've road my bike out to Purcellville several times and the drivers out there can be pretty inconsiderate of you. Before Reston the cars can be pretty considerate and give you the right of way. But, at about Reston on it seems that they don't care about you at all. It really does piss me off. Sometimes I feel like organizing a beat down for those drivers. :)

we're all pullin for you to get better 1974, im sure you'll be back in game shape in no time!!!

personally, i am not a fan of the bikes--one of my mom's best friends' son was killed after he hit a car head on on his bike, twas not a pretty scene. my buddy recently got a bike and to try to alert people of his presence, he wears a reflective orange vest (crossing guard-esque, eh?). although its still a risk, CLL and wheoever is going to get a bike or has one, PLEASE exercise the utmost of care, one less skins fan and one less quality person in the world could be the difference between the survival of genius and the apocalypse.

that's my rant, sorry :-)
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

I'm calling Shenanigans. I saw the "stitches" in question, and I promise you, they were drawn on with a Sharpie!!

Well, I had my "re-entry stamp" removed this morning so now you can call me scarface. It's not too bad - it did kind of hurt though. I thought I was going to bust them out during the game too, Terri! They must have stitched me up good :-)

I can post a picture of my accident if you want proof people! lol

No, no pictures please! Some of us cannot handle that kind of stuff.

Unless, of course, Redskins1974 follows the "CLL's Guide to Luring".
