Cap Trouble in '06
Check it out:
http://redskins.scout.com/3/salary_cap_chart.html
Our total salaries for this year are around 63 mil. Nearly everyone on are team's salary doubles if not triples next year and 1/4 of our players are unsigned. This puts at about 110 mil without the cap hits and signings. I think we could be in trouble next season.

I guess that means we better win the Superbowl this year. I am hereby revising my prediction of the Redskins regular season finish from 9-7 to 13-3.
The good news is that the 25% of players whose contracts expire after this year are not expensive players. None of them are over $1.0 Million for this year. The bad news is that if any of them had a big year this year they are as good as gone next season.
The other good news is that our dead cap space for next year is still low.
The bad news is that while we only have 3 players counting more than $4M against the cap this year, we have 11 next year. Yikes.

2005 dead cap = 19.823 Million
2006 dead cap = 3.518 Million

16 million dollars = tons of dead money clearing up
Coles is 9.285 Million this year and this is the last of the Jeremiah Trotter fiasco (4.826 Million left).
Next years biggest hit is Mike Barrow for 1.666 Million

16 million is marginal considering our salaries increase by 50 million. That means even if the cap goes up 20 million we will still be 14 million over.

We've discussed this many many times. The Cap next year will be very close to 100 million. With a few cuts and restructures we'll be fine. The reason we are so close to the cap next year is because Lavar and Samuels both have double bonus hits next season. That's why their cap hits go way up next year and then drop quite a bit the next season.
The current CBA runs thru next season. There currently is no new CBA for 2007. I'm sure there will be one by then, but as it is, it's a free year. Regardless, we are in great shape after next season.

Every year it looks like this and we always manage to sort things out. Also, EVERY starter this year is under contract next year so we don't have to worry about losing anyone to free agency. Therefore, we can focus on restructuring some contracts and hopefully it will all take care of itself. Danny's a smart guy and he has some pretty good accountants cooking the books so hopefully we'll be OK.
On a side note, here you can see how far each team is under the cap this year:

Hey, we're further under the cap than the Pats. I have no clue how Indy is $5 mil under with all the huge contracts they've done lately. If anyone's in cap hell in the near future it has to be them.
Also, look how cheap the Eagles are yet again. $12.6 mil under!!! The next closest is the Rams at $6.5 mil under. I can't believe they're so proud of that as well because it does them no good. Maybe if they weren't so damn stingy they would have a Super Bowl by now. I'm not complaining though.

This problem is not going to take care of itself. We have back-loaded contracts for the last few years and now they are all rising sharply at once. Everyone assumes that we will be fine because we have been in the past. Next year is different because of ALL the contracts of our players rising so substancially at once.
John Clayton's take:
For the 2006 season, the Redskins already have $116 million of cap dollars committed, second only to the Broncos. That's a manageable number if the cap goes toward $100 million, but even if it doesn't, the Redskins will have to make tough decisions on which players to keep."

That's the way it has been almost every year. We've always had loads of backloaded contracts and we always renegotiate enough to sort it out. Every year, we are the team that people point to and say next year we're in cap hell. And what did we do this year? We ate $9 mil just to get Coles out of town, signed two first round draft picks, and we're still almost $2 mil under. When I see us actually having to release our core guys then I'll believe we're in cap hell.

Contracts didn't rise sharply this year like they do next year and we still are barely under the cap. That's my point, next year is going to be trouble. For example, this year we have 7 players with a cap figure of more than 2 mil, next year that number rises to 20. I don't think we will be in cap hell quite yet, but it could be the beginning of a 3 or 4 year period of cap problems. I expect at least 2 big time players will have to be released after this season because of our salary cap issue.

I hate this kind of thinking. Is there anyone on this board who would not instantly want the skins and the Eagles to trade places?
Philthy may have only LOST in the biggest game, but there team is ridiculously deep, painfully young and really well coached.
I wish I could say the same about the team I root for.

I'm not gonna get too far into this discussion, because I'm basically tired of explaining it. IMO, and I'm pretty knowledgeable on the cap, we will be fine next year. We will be right up against the cap and won't be signing any big names next season, but we will be fine. You can't cut big name players anyway, because if your already against the cap, you can't taken accelerated bonus hits.
When you sign a player, it has to be approved by the NFL. They take into consideration what the cap will likely be and your current cap. We couldn't have signed Moss and others if we would be unable to be under the cap next season.
