why c. rogers is better than f. smoot

Post by Absolute Hogness »

I am very happy that we finally have 2 corners who are legitmate "run supporters".

How many times did you see F. Smoot miss the qb on an unblocked blitz? or champ/smoot get run over by a TE and/or RB?

That will NOT happen with Springs & Rogers, those guys are beasts. The upgrade in strength will also help deal with the TO's of the world.

Our secondary is absolutely massive now (assuming taylor doesn't hold out).

Smoot was a solid #2, but he would've been an overwhelmed and undersized #1. Rogers, on the other hand, would be the #1 cb on most nfl teams.

your thoughts?

No rookie corner should be a #1 on any team.

I didn't neccessarily mean this year. I'll clarify.

By the time his rookie contract is up he will be better than most #1 corners in the league.

at least I hope so...

I love Smoooooooot. But I feel and agree with your opinion.

In time Rogers will definitely be a better corner than Smoot, and he fits in much better with Gregg Williams' scheme than Smoot did.

We should have 2 long term Pro Bowlers in our secondary now with Taylor and Rogers.

The highlight reel that I saw of C. Rodgers showed some pretty good tackling. One QB running on an option play nearly flipped as he was hit right around the quad / knee area.

Personally, I thought that both Champ and Smoot were pretty good tacklers compared to a lot of other corners in the league. But Springs certainly set a new standard this past year (I'm still thinking about that time against Detroit when he fought through a WR block and just stood up a RB on a sweep play).

I agree with the sentiment of your post, but we will have to see how Rogers does before we simply say that he is better. I mean he hasn't taken a snap in the NFL.

I suspect that he will be a better tackler than Smoot. But Champ Bailey was a very good Run Stopper! He, like Fred, would sacrifice his body to take down a big back. But, unlike Fred, he was actually effective. I would have loved to see him in G. Williams attacking scheme. Not that I'm upset about him going to Denver.....anymore....

I believe he's better because he's more physical than Smoot was.

Smoot tried to be physical, but he was most likely the smallest NFL player.

I think in the end, on a talent standpoint this is better for us.

I dont care about smoot anymore i think Rogers and Springs are great corners, Rogers will be better than Smoot in time. And atleast Rogers can tackle using his hands not his shoulders, and doesnt hurt his shoulder every time he gets a tackle.
