Blood clot sidelines Tra Thomas By REUBEN FRANK phillyBurbs.com
Eagles Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tra Thomas is being treated for a blood clot in his leg and won't participate in next week's spring minicamp, the team announced Tuesday.
A team spokesman said the club would release no details about Thomas's condition - when he was diagnosed with a blood clot or how he's being treated. But he said the condition is under control and the prognosis for Thomas to return to the team in time for training camp is very good.
The Eagles declined to make trainer Rick Burkholder available to comment on Thomas's condition.
Thomas, 30, has been the Eagles' starting left tackle since 1998. He was selected this past season to his third Pro Bowl team.
Blood clots, generally treated for several months with blood thinners, can be fatal if not properly diagnosed and treated because they can block blood flow to the arteries and veins or break off and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs.
There are numerous causes for blood clots, including sitting in the same position for a long time, obesity, high blood pressure and genetics.
Eagles defensive tackle Rhett Hall missed all but two games in 1995 with blood clots that became dislodged. Quick work by the Eagles' training staff was credited for possibly saving his life.
Tra Thomas is still on anti-coagulants. They never told us the size of he clot, but it's still there.
Eagles | Thomas Misses Practice, Injury Update - from www.KFFL.com Wed, 1 Jun 2005 15:32:14 -0700
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid announced OT Tra Thomas (leg) did not participate during the team's passing camp Wednesday, June 1, and is not expected to practice for the next few weeks. Reid explained the team would be cautious with Thomas as he recovers from a blood clot in his leg. "We are hoping by training camp. Obviously blood clots are a pretty serious thing, so we have to make sure that the clot has disappeared," Reid said. "There is always that risk of the clot coming back. Right now he is on blood thinners to break the clot up and it looks like it is separating very well. They told us that it was a three month period that he would miss."
