Coles looks to have ruined this one!!!!!

The Santana Moss for Laveranues Coles trade appears to be dead.

FOXSports.com has learned that the trade-swap of the two receivers stalled on Saturday due to concerns that Coles wants a new contract with figures the Jets aren't willing to meet. Redskins sources remain hopeful that something could change in the next few days.
The only way a trade could happen is if Coles is willing to go to the Jets under similar terms as his current contract. If talks resume, they are expected to begin Monday or Tuesday. But in the meantime, they may look to shop Coles elsewhere. Any team hoping to trade for Coles may have to agree with the receiver on a new contract, to avoid an unhappy player.

There have been reports that Coles is unhappy playing in Joe Gibbs' offense and the Redskins don't want a disgruntled player. However, the team doesn't want to release Coles and receive nothing in return.

Coles has great stock in the NFL as a tough player because he plays through pain. And when he played with the Jets, Coles was known as Chad Pennington's go-to guy.

I hope that his agent will let him know that the Skins arnt just going to cut him so he needs to work with everyone in getting a deal done. I feel he's being a bit unreasonable.

Good. I don't get that warm feeling from Moss. I just have the impression of him as a soft, money centered player. As far as a speedy receiver goes, we have Jacobs and he has proven to have a solid work ethic. Do you think there is any chance now that Coles will just be a Redskin? Come on Coles. Stay. We will all just pretend this whole thing never happened!!!!!

Yo, I'm a HUGE Jets fan. I just came to this website to see how u guys think of this trade. I'm tellin u right now I wud love this trade. A lot of people here in NY and NJ don't want to see it happen but i'm one of them. I wud trade moss strate up for coles. Coles did nothing in washington this year anyway. Plus pennington and coles had a great connection and as for moss. He's a speedy reciever not more agresive then coles but speedy. I think it wud be a great trade for NYJ what do u guys think of it on the washington perspective?

If the jets pay all or most of the 5 mil bonus due and therefore, our cap hit is near 4 mil for him, fine. It hurts to have 9 mil cap hit this year for a guy playing somewhere else.

OR -- the jets give us a 2nd round pick along with Moss.

Looks like the Team might be shopping somewhere other than NY. Lets hope something gets done, lets get something for him, if not keep him, and lets move on.

I was thinking earlier about a possible trade with a team ahead of us in the draft for Coles and they take our #9 pick and we get their #1. We would the for sure get Braylon Edwards or Mike Williams

NYJ 1968: I would say Buyer Beware. Coles has had the same toe problem for two seasons. He's complaining about the offense under Joe Gibbs after one measly season. Now, when the Skins jump through hoops to deal him AT HIS REQUEST, he throws this last minute curve-ball about wanting more money. I can't figure out what on earth is going to please this guy!!! His reputation is quickly circling the porcelain bowl.

Coles story just gets thicker and thicker. He wants to be released. He isn't happy. He'll pay some bonus money back.

Now he thinks he deserves EVEN MORE MONEY than the fat contract he's got now? I think we're starting to see this isn't about the Skins offense. This is about the Coles wanting more money.

The is no way that the NFL allows a team to circumvent the salary cap rules by having a bonus undone then returned. It just won'e happen.

I doubt the union allows Coles to return the bonus outright, so that's not an option.

Any Coles trade boils down to Samuels' restructering and that hasn't happened, so that's what really killed this potential trade.

No your wrong. It was pretty clearly stated by the Jets, by ESPN, FOXSports, CNNSI... the deal was killed when Coles' agent casually mentioned to the Jets over breakfast that "Oh by the way, after you guys work out all the kinks in this deal, we're going to need a bigger contract." The Jets reportedly got up and walked out. Talk about a slap in the face. This had nothing to do with Samuels or the Skins Cap room.

Actually... there's a clause in the CBA that pertains to EXACTLY that...

Credit for Signing Bonuses Refunded. In the event that a Team receives a refund from the player of any previously paid portion of a signing bonus, or the Team fails to pay any previously allocated portion of a signing bonus, such amount as has previously been included in Team Salary shall be added to the Team’s Salary Cap for the next League Year.

They aren't trying to undo his bonus, they want Coles to forfeit the $5 million that he is due on April 1st. It's not the same as giving money back, but I agree the NFLPA will be all over this if he agrees to forfeit the unpaid portion of his bonus

The Skins would clear enough cap space to cut or trade Coles without Samuels extending his contract, we are -$7.6 million now and a trade or release of 50/50 would clear another $1.5M or Renaldo Wynn can be released if he doesn't restucture his contract, his Cap # is $4.0M in '05 and to release him would save $2.33M this year. Samuels's extention is much needed but isn't going to hold up any plans the team has
The bottom line is if we release Samuels we save $5.38 million :cry:

I think it still boils down to whether a legal contract is legal. Coles belongs to the Redskins. He can't reak the contract just because he likes the Jets' offense better again.

The Redskins own his rights, and there is no way that they can be forced to give him to the Jets in such a way that the Redskins suffer by it.

(Samuels is irrelevant to Coles.)

Lawyers: please explain if I'm wrong, and why.

that's fine. Let him hold out. He wouldn't get paid, and he wouldn't be playing. If he chose that route, that would be fine with me. Gibbs would still get by without him...
