Butterfly Effect - prospects shrikage

Post by Scooter »

The decision by Leinart to stay at USC has an effect on the entire draft. Especially effected are those teams in the Top 10 - 12 picks. Leinart would have been the Top Pick, so now the players get bumped up a notch. All the NFL QB prospects get bumped a notch. The other players at various positions will see more money as a result.

Also, I think this will tighten the existing Free Agent market. Leinarts choice also means more money for Drew Brees and Kelly Holcomb. Kurt Warner could start for a new team in '05.

So if a butterfly flaps it's wings half-way around the world, does it mean anything to a pass thrown in the NFL 8 months from now?

Matt Leinart staying in school could be potentially bad for the Redskins :frown:

Why do you say that?

Because someone like Aaron Rodgers who would have probably gone somewhere in the top five could become the number one pick. When Rodgers is gone Alex Smith will jump from a top ten pick to the top 5. Then what will happen is more teams looking for a QB, might realize theres not many available QB's and look for something else such as a WR or OT. Someone like Mike Williams who should get drafted at around pick 5-10 will get drafted higher, and Braylon Edwards who should be there at 9 may be gone before that. Its a ripple effect that might affect the Skins in the end

But it works both ways
Teams drafting after us will see the prospect they were looking at moving up, which would make our #9 worth something to teams that had no need to talk to us about moving up before Matt made his choice.

That's assuming we want to trade down

It's possible that might happen but I don't think SF will draft Rodgers. I think they get a FA QB and either trade pick or draft a WR. I think they really wanted Leinart to get season ticket buyers that Rodgers wouldn't bring in.
