need some help

Post by skinsfan1 »

I just need some advice. Recently i recieved soome e-mails that i couldn't get to play. (short film or video format) It was suggested to me that i install the new ms service pack 2. I did, and then something about my norton security being expired came up and some different security window popped upand the files still didn't work. Also i would get word and excel e-mails that before i installed the service pack all i had to do was save the file to my documents, and then i was able to open it from there. Now when i try to save or open those kind of files, a window pops up saying site not found, and it won't let me open or save the files. That window pops up all the time for those kinds of files. I have since uninstalled the service pack, but it still wont let me open or save those files.

Also one last problem, I have media player 10 and real 1 installed but i'll get an email that is a video or clip and when i try to play it the screen changes, and it says something about media error or something like that. what else do i need to install to play those clips.

As you can see i don't have too much computer knowledge..

Any help or suggestions would be appricated.

If I remeber correctly, Norton will override that new security feature that comes wit SP2. MS has finally conceded that security is a priority and included a firewall with SP2. The fact that you have Norton would cause a conflict so Norton overrides the Windows Firewall. The Windows firewall is a POS anyway.

As far as not being able to play the movies... Im not sure maybe you need a certain codec. If the files are divx then they wont play in the media players. Or if the movies is a .mov which means you need quick time.

I wish I could be of more help but Im going to assume that Norton could be conflicting with the files. I'm thinking that its a security issue. Maybe the serverity needs to be toned down or something.

The window popping up that says site not found is baffling. The message usually comes up when a browser cannot find a site for whatever reason. One reason can be a loss of network connectivity. If you're getting that error when trying to save or open these documents makes me believe that you're pulling these files from somewhere and that they are not attached to the e-mail.

If you can give me details it'll help me and everyone else out more with our troubleshooting.

I also recommend going to Microsofts website and posting in their forums, the smartest geeks in the world lurk there. Take a sacrificial cheese sandwich to offer them.

Were you expecting the email attachments, or did a friend forward some jokes to you? Could the attachments have been viruses or similar????

My little sister has at least 2 viruses on her computer that Norton didn't even recognize! She'd get a pop-up saying her computer would shut down in 30 seconds -- and it would! :thump:

My 2 cents

buy a mac. you wanna know why no one writes viruses for mac?.... it's pointless. that'll be my next pc regardless of price. there's the good stuff, then there's everything else. buy the cheap crap and complain, or get a real pc and don't worry about it. :)

 my old excuse was "nothing is compatible with mac." but over the last few years, i've realized that the only programs i use that are worth the time of day ARE compatable. no brainer if you ask me. of course, i have no brain so it's a pretty simple decision.
