Post by doroshjt »

So they switched the format to spanish radio???? What is that all about. Does anyone know if the junkies will still be on in the morning? I like to switch to them and mike and mike on my morning commute. This sucks for good radio in DC, guess 101 will love this

Just happened today, without any announcment.

WHFS has switched formats to a Spanish format. DCRTV.org reports:

"HFS Goes Spanish - 1/12 - At noon Wednesday, Infinity killed off alternative rock WHFS (99.1 FM). It's now Spanish language El Zol, with "a current hit blend of Caribbean and Central American dance music." Check out whfs.com. "We have made clear our desire to expand into this burgeoning market and believe this move marks an important step in our commitment to Spanish radio," said Joel Hollander, president and chief operating officer of Infinity. "There exists a tremendous opportunity for Infinity to launch a Spanish-language format in Washington DC where almost 10 percent of the population is not being directly served. El Zol will be the most powerful Spanish radio station in the area and will provide listeners with the music, entertainment, and information relevant to the many segments of the Latino culture." Spanish Broadcasting System served as a consultant to and advised Infinity on the reformatting of the station. Infinity announced a strategic alliance with SBS in October 2004, which included an equity interest in the largest Hispanic-controlled radio broadcasting company in the USA. No word about what will happen to the old WHFS airstaff, although there are rumblings that the morning Junkies may move back to Infinity talker WJFK-FM. WHFS was born in the 1960s on 102.3 FM in Bethesda, and became a maverick free-form progressive rocker by the early 1970s. It moved to Annapolis-based 99.1 FM in 1983. After a variety of owners, it evolved into a mainstream alternative rock outlet serving both DC and Baltimore, with studios in Lanham. During the past years, however, its ratings have slumped, particularly in the DC market."

The last minute of WHFS can be heard here (Submitted by Mike Sica): http://www.hfstival.com/elzol.mp3

I was talking to one of the Junkies (dont know which one) online and he told me about them switching formats to a Spanish station. I was upset and furious. I listen to the Junkies every morning on my way to school. I guess I'll just settle for Elliott in the Morning or 95.5, 93.9, or 92.3. I love all those stations but mornings won't be the same without the Junkies for now. Hopefully they'll get back on the air soon.

I don't think it's the alternative rock that people are gonna miss so much... I think it's the Junkies in the morning that people are gonna be poopie about....

For all you Junkies fans... there might be a solution.... Howard's morning show is leaving WJFK after this year.... The Junks use to be on WJFK... problem solved.... now you just have to write WJFK and let them know you want your Junks back.....

except don't say it like that....

Loved listening to HFS years ago - like more than 20 - Weasel was my favorite DJ. Used to actually play sets - as opposed to just one song after another with no thought behind the process. It was alternative before there was alternative.

Who are the junkies? When I moved down here to Tampa a couple years ago I think it was some guy named Graham doing the morning show for hfs. Elliot in the morning was pretty good on dc101.

The Junkies used to be "The Sports Junkies" on WJFK. They moved over to HFS to do the morning show not too long ago.

Interestingly enough, Weasel and Surf are both still on the air in the DC area. Just on a classic rock station, 94.7.

I really haven't listened to the radio since I got XM. I agree with NC - HFS was awesome prior to the early 90s... it all went downhill when Infinity took them over and made them basically a top 40 station. I definitely think the Junkies will end up back on WJFK though - Infinity owns that station as well and they indicated in one article that they plan to place some DJs on their other stations.

What about Damien from HFS (early to late 80's). Anyone remember him - had an interesting delivery. Great DJ tho.

Or Monomoniacal Monday, Tenacious Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, Throbbing Thursday and Frantic Friday.

Throbbing Thursday summed things up for me pretty good.
