Smoot is gone! If he wants that much he's gone. I was really starting to like that guy too. Oh well, thanks for the four years Smoot.

I also voted "no", but only because I can't imagine what one man can do with 14 million that he can't possibly do with 10. It's status, and it's "Look At Me". It's Bailey and Deion.
It's not blue-collar Smoot.

Smoot is believed to be seeking a deal in the neighborhood of the six-year, $30 million contract cornerback Shawn Springs signed with Washington last winter...

Id say hes worth that, because he is just as good as Shawn Springs, maybe a little better. But not 14Mil Signing bonus better.

I think Champs been getting in his head. [-(

Cut him, if our front office gives him 14 million dollars I will be sure that they are bent on outdoing themselves in stupidity.

He is good, but not worth that.

Let him go and draft Rolle out of Miami.

I, for one, think Springs is head and shoulders above Smoot. Smoot is okay, but Springs played exceptionally well last year. Smoot continues to play too far off the line and constantly allows those WRs to get those dinky-dunk passes for 5-10 yards.

justice hog i agree with you hands down.springs is better than smoot.ive always felt smoot was undersized and got beat alot with physical receivers.i agree there wil be some good cb in free agent or get rolle in the draft.what a secondary that could become springs, rolle, taylor and i like clark too or bowen.unless mike williams is there at nine.

One thing I do want to add here guys is that I had the opportunity to talk to Cory Raymer on more than one occasion this year. Sunday night after the Minn. game I was talking to him and I asked if he was excited about the off-season? His answer surprised me...he said you know it's a strange time of the year in the NFL. As he knotted towards the stadium he said, they run everything. Players I don't know if they’ll be here next week let alone next year. Even though Cory has a 3 year contract nothing is guaranteed. The only that is, is his signing bonus. So while we sit here and say, cut this person or don't sign this person, please remember there's very few times in a player’s career when they have some leverage. While we want our favorite players to remain loyal to the team, the owners show no loyalty to the players. It business!! I have a new found empathy for player (not all of them) these days. I say go ahead Smootie get your worth, if it can be worked out here, great! If not best of luck to you!

It will -not- happen:

"We've got a certain number of bucks to spend," Gibbs said. "My motivation is the core group. ... There may come a situation, hopefully not, where we've got to look out for the core group. If one person ... becomes unreasonable, we've got to protect the core group."
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

You can say that again RiC!

I see your point DEHog but this guy is intimating that the team does not want him (sounds like he's hearing what he wants to hear??) IMO we have made a more than fair offer and IF he wants to be a Redskin AND get paid very well then he can do that.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I belive the Wash Post stated that Smoot wants 14 mill and the Skins offered a 10 mill signing bonus a difference of 4 mill. and that it would put him in the top 10 paid catagory. Smoot wants top 5 catagory. Lets look at his statistics compared to the other 10 and Shawn Springs. If they were similar then yes pay him what he earned but if he fell short then pay him accordingly.

You're dead on there Justice Hog. Smoot is great but no doubt Springs is better. He is bigger and he can cover big recievers, be physical, make tackles, and you can see G Williams loves blitzing with him.

Smoot is a great competitor but he is not physical enough, often gives the reciever too much of a cushion, and I think he is definately the weakest tackler on our starting D. His shoulder injuries contribute to this but I also think that the way he tackles contributes to his shoulder injuries. He just goes in there at the ankles and tries to take the guys feet out. This is also why he misses tackles, he doesn't get a clean hit on the guy and wrap up. He is still a great cover corner who leaves it all out on the field and I really want this guy back but he has some weaknesses in his game. Springs doesn't.

I would be fine giving Smoot a deal like Springs' because he is a great competitor and it would be nice to have some more continuity but Springs only had a $10 million signing bonus. That's the absolute most that we should give Smoot and if he wants more I hope we can franchise him and trade him like we did to Bailey (not sure how all this works). I was very surprised to see that he was a higher alternate for the Pro Bowl than Springs, and this shows that IMO he is overrated as Bailey was. Both are excellent players but they are far from being THE best at their positions (well Bailey is close but I would only say top five). I would say Smoot is a top 20 CB at best. We will figure it out. We lost one guy last year and became the second best D in the league so maybe next year we'll be number one. G Williams knows what he's doing.

I can assure you Smoot ain't ending up on the Cowboys.

Parcells made it clear last year that he's not overpaying for a cornerback no matter WHO it is, and Smoot has been overrated from day one any way. Why would we want someone who wets himself at the mere mention of Antonio Bryant's name?

Besides, the new rule emphasis makes all the CB's look like crap, THAT's the biggest reason Champ Bailey has looked so horrible at times. A good pass rush takes priority over a good CB nowadays.

The days of the true "shutdown corner" are gone.
