Opinions on Royal?

I believe that a good TE is the key to a successful NFL offense. ey is great at finding holes and is a top Red Zone target now, but as Philly showed us... he can't do it alone. If we had a TE who could carry some of the load in the Red Zone we could really open up the offense, it would mean more openings for Coles, Gardner, ey, and even Portis or Betts in the flats. But the question is, is Robert Royal the type of TE who can do these things? Will he ever be that kind of TE?

Royal is good at finding holes in zone coverage, he's got good hands, and he's a big guy who's also got a great work ethic. The problem though is that his blocking is not all that good. Should the Redskins look for a new TE in the draft or in free agency, or should they continue to work on Royal who's still only 25? Could Joe Bugel improve his run blocking?

I believe Bugel can work on his run blocking. He has made some great plays for us this year, and I think keeping him will take some of the load off of ey. He's a keeper.

Robert Royal is only 25 years old and he has good size and soft hands

He could be our number 2 TE behind ey, although we know that to Coach Gibbs ey is an H-Back

He could be a good fit to help us in our rather weak Goal Line Offense

If Bugel works on his run blocking then he can become a very solid TE on both runs and passes

How many times in this board do we have to go back to discuss that several offensive players may only shine when we get the -DOMINANT- offensive line that we need?

I like Portis, I like ey, I like Royal. I am a Ramsey fan. But -ALL- of them can not go very far at all without the holes, the protection and the many plays that are needed for our full system to work.

I am amazed that time and time again people criticise the conservative play calling by Joe Gibbs. This is what he can do with the line that he has. Do we need to remind ourselves about the -MANY- penalties? Do we need to ask ourselves why is Portis not having so many opennings?

Joe Gibbs is an offensive coach. He -WOULD- love to call complex multiple-movement plays with an established running game mixed with long passes to keep one step ahead of the defense.

He can not do that when the players can not perform and execute their roles under his system.

Robert Royal and all the players above will have better games when we manage to win the war in the trenches.

I for one really dont like Royal that much. I think we should of kept Chamberlain or whatever his name was. But I think we should draft a Awesome T.E. one who really big but can fly down the field. ey is really not that bib for a T.E. not as big s Heap, Sharpe and other good T.E.

I'm not sure on how to "managa" or exactly what it is, but what you were getting at is absolutly right.... We can have all the superstars we want on offense, but if we don't have a quality O-Line and Depth... then the Superstars do us no good..

Peyton Manning has been sacked 9 times in 14 games this season... he's about as much as a scrambler as Ramsey, who has been sacked 18 times in 6 games....

I don't see how it could be any clearer on what we need.....

Well if Ramsey had a TE who knew how to get open! One that would catch the ball and then run over everyone in his path, one who would jump OVER defenders to make catches and then hipcheck them out of the way like he was playing ball with a bunch of gradeschoolers... THEN we'd be in the Superbowl hunt! We'd be undefeated still!!! Why didn't we draft Kellen Winslow Jr.!?!?!

Royal is a good TE for a Gibbs offense once his blocking inproves he'll be ideal considering his age I think we should keep him. ey is in his first year and is opening some eyes throughout the NFL, he not a conventional TE he's a HB. As far as Byron Chamberlain goes he didn't make it out of training camp with the Broncos this year, I think we got rid of him at the right time

So is our OL the reason we're throwing all those WR screens or is that a true hallmark of Gibbs O? I think our biggest dissapointment this season has been our captain and/or lack thereof...Lavar. This guy clearly was dissgruntled w/money issues and if the coach was ne one but a legend he would have tried to orchastrate mutiny,in turn he has a minor injury 2-3wks at most and sits his arse on the sideline the almost the whole entire year...not very warrior like, I have lost some respect for LA's play this season and I hope he makes up for it in DAL, bring back black visor arrington if thats what it takes.

The Lavar Arrington injury was more than just a 2-3 wk injury because he injured his knee and had surgery in September. He sat out 3 weeks (not including the bye week) as planned, when he returned to practice he had a different injury sprained knee (practicing on a wet field). I know of no dissgruntled player that's going to have surgery because he felt he had been cheated. Lavar has said nothing negative regarding this situation. He hasn't said anything because he realize two thinks (1)"The Danny" doesn't have a problem paying/over paying (whatever the player's agent wants) for talent (2) His agents are idiots.

As far as the short passes go this is a staple of a Joe Gibbs offense (he just wants keep the chains moving). However Gibbs has been known to go deep once he has lulled you into thinking he's only going to throw the short ones or he'll come out firing it down field

Royal was on Monday Night Live with Doc Walker and Springs last Monday. I like him. Springs said he was probably the best blocker on the team. I didn't say it, Springs did.

I didn't realize it, but Royal was a highly recruited Basketball player out of high school. He decided to go to LSU as a TE though, because he was only 6'4".

Doc said there are three different TE positions in Gibbs' O and Royal is valuable because he can play all three including HB. I don't think we've seen the best of Royal yet.

Right. Royal plays the blocking TE, just as Don Warren did. You get a sense of how Gibbs uses the blocking TE by looking at Warren's career stats, at http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/playe ... D/06030015

By the way: notice that Warren played 14 seasons, all for the Redskins, and hardly missed a game until his last two seasons. That's dependability and durability, and that's why Gibbs considered him a "core Redskin". Those are the kind of players that Gibbs is collecting.

Notice also that Royal is the young TE, and Gibbs kept him over the more experienced guys. That suggests he will be part of the Redskins' future.

Royal is a good tight end. He really is a good blocking tight end, that was the main reason he was picked over the older guys in pre-season. Each of the three tight ends (or two te and one h-back) all play a different role in gibbs offense. I think royal is a good blocking tight end that can make catches when needed. But i also think that we should still pick up a tight end that can get downfield and stretch the safties. That way cooley will be one on one with linebackers in the flat. So cooley and royal are good "core skins" but we need another good pass-catching te to help out on offense.

TE's in Gibbs offense are 90% used for blocking. He won't bring in ones that can stretch the field, because he wants bigger guys for blocking purposes. ey is catching more passes than Gibbs HB's usually do simply because he's got great hands and as PRam said, he has a knack for getting open.

I imagine Gibbs will keep Royal because he's a pretty good blocker, has decent speed to get open, and can catch when needed. I also think Gibbs will bring in a couple more TEs, because Gibbs likes to run 2 TE sets in short yardage situations.

I really can't wait for you younger guys to see this offense in full swing. It's a thing of beauty.

My favorite was to see the skins pound the ball out of the 2 TE set on short yardage 3 or 4 times, and then BAM, 40 yard bomb on play action. Defenses totally fooled. With this defense, we could be ranked #1 in offense AND defense next season =)

Well, probably not #1 NEXT year, but pretty good

my opinion.... at least he hasn't gotten hurt yet this year. knock on wood. the guy has had some bad luck with injuries.
