We're not going to replace veteran starters with stopgaps and draft picks, play a tougher first place schedule, and have the same record. We're also not going to surprise anyone with the Kirk Cousins offense this season. What we need is balance in the form of a respectable rushing game, and it'll be a cold day in hell before I trust Matt Jones to be the primary option in a respectable rushing game. I'm sure Scot McCloughan has a plan but I'd like to know what it is.
I get your point man. But what does free agency have to do with getting balance from a respectable rushing game? I don't expect any changes to the o-line or the RB position from free agency.
I also disagree that we need to replace veteran starters with stopgaps. We need to replace veteran stopgaps with new veteran stopgaps and draft picks.
You're completely right though that we have holes that are going to have to be filled in free agency. What I'm personally applauding is that the team didn't go out in the first three days of FA and go buck wild throwing money around. Some of the best guys that McCloughan picked up last year were guys that he signed after May.
My point is I think that RB is one position they need to address in free agency with a reliable veteran. Is Matt Jones and a draft pick really how we want to improve the rushing game?

As opposed to what? Arian Foster? Joique Bell? The list of available running backs doesn't really have me banging on my keyboard wondering what SM is waiting for. http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/ ... available/
I'm sure they'll bring in a couple FA RBs to compete, but my bet would be on Matt Jones, Chris Thompson and a draft pick going into the season.
Personally I'm looking for the running game to improve more from better o-line play, passing game taking a step forward and Matt Jones having a year under his belt.

There's at least one name on that list I wouldn't mind seeing on the Skins: Ronnie Hillman. He's 24, he started 11 games last season, he has a salary under $1.0MM and he has playoff experience and a Super Bowl ring.

Yeah he jumped out at me too. Doesn't have a lot of mileage on him either. Here's what they wrote about him on scout.com:
"Ronnie Hillman is a young player with a lot of upside. He remained the Broncos starting running back for all of the regular season and two of the three playoff games. He has improved in his pass protection and is instinctual in bouncing it outside when he has the ball. He is not, however, a bell cow running back. He weighs less than 200 pounds and can't stand up to the wear and tear of being a featured back. He fits as a dynamic change of pace runner."
Gotta be honest. Looking at that list of available guys, not many I would take over Alfred Morris!
Sounds like Morris may be on his way to Denver. That would make a lot of sense for him.

Alfred Morris was mostly a victim of the salary cap. His declining production didn't help his cause but it was mostly about the money. I think he'd do well in Denver. If they get a real quarterback. Mark Sanchez?

my, how things have changed
Denver went gangbusters in 2014 with free agents and they just won the Super Bowl. Usually the teams with the least amount of position needs are always quiet. I ain't saying we should be flying the jet everywhere but we should at least be active. We have some holes.
Gangbusters??????
In 2014 they signed (per 2014 free agent tracker): ◾Emmanuel Sanders, WR (formerly with Pittsburgh) – should start ◾DeMarcus Ware, DE/OLB (formerly with Dallas) – should start ◾Will Montgomery, C (released by Washington) – should start at guard or center ◾Aqib Talib, CB (formerly with New England) – should start ◾T.J. Ward, S (formerly with Cleveland) – should start
Now, 4 of those guys were impact players, but I wouldn't say they went "gangbusters". In fact, signing 4 new starters is quite common.
At the end of the day, good teams draft their talent and don't spend $$$ on big time FAs. I LOVED how Scot did that last year, and I LOVE how he's doing it this year.
We have holes, but we shouldn't be going after cap liabilities. Scot is smart in how he signs FAs. You DRAFT your franchise players.....
Naw Aqib, TJ Ward were amongst highest paid signings at their positions and were thought to be too risky for what they were asking at the time. Talib wasn't signed by our Redskins because we felt we had to pay too much...same with Ward. Broncos were okay with spending that money. I can't remember what Ware got but Sanders also got a good deal as well. These were not 1 year deals they actually were multi-year big bonus investments and what critics called "offseason champs" that year was the Broncos.
Isn't that what we are saying we shouldn't be anymore? I'm just pointing out that the Broncos just won a Super Bowl with most of their talent coming from other teams (Peyton as another ex.) and were offseason champs. Two of the guys that were on the Redskins radar were passed up because they were considered too high but yet they got a ring. I do feel that sustainability of teams like the Packers, Ravens, Steelers are great and financially you are better off but who's to say if those teams weren't just a tad more aggressive in free agency that they wouldn't win 2, 3 or 4 Super Bowls within a short pan of time instead of just 1?
Besides I think what people forget to mention is you are pretty much guaranteed 10-11 wins with a real franchise QBs like Rodgers, Brady anyway with just about anyone around you lol. So all in all I feel that it is great to mirror teams that have success but the Redskins are not identical to those teams. We do not have a Brady or Rodgers nor Rothliesburger that can win games and improve the talent around them. With that said I think it would be smart to go out and be a tad more aggressive in free agency (last year for example was a good model of not too much not too less). This year was a weak free agency class compared to our needs so I understand.
*keep in mind Bruce Allen and Eric Schafer* are doing the contract negotiations primarily not SM.
The Redskins have hammered out an agreement with cornerback Will Blackmon on a two-year contract, a person with knowledge of the situation said. The financial terms of the deal weren’t immediately available. Blackmon, 31, signed with Washington a week into the 2015 season and went on to start 10 of 15 games.

I don't really look for this FO to be "aggressive" or making sure they 'address needs' like many other franchises do - I look for these guys to ONLY add players that fit in with what they want PLUS they are looking at finding specific types of players ... Take Eric Weddle - a very good safety but he's 31 and came across badly with the Chargers at the end of last season - now he's a Raven and they used up almost half of their cap $ on 1 31 year old - we are not doing deals like that - even for very good players - that's the "sensible" Ravens mind you
this FO has a huge task in digging this franchise out of Snyder's mess - it will take at least another 2 drafts plus a few VERY select free agents
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I don't know we did sign Dashon Goldson and had to end up cutting him this year. Same thing to me, except Weddle is a better player overall and less of a risk.
Eric Weddle is a really good safety and could help most secondaries
IMO - just not the great character guy that this FO wants is all and he cost more than we were comfortable with

Goldson got injured, so its not like it was some poor player assessment. Just unlucky. Its also worth noting that whatever we paid him, cutting him this year didn't kill us in the cap. Don't be surprised at all if he re-signs here this year at a lower salary.
I know we're all mostly pleased that McCloughan is such a smart guy, but I read an interesting article today pointing out that 23 teams were taking a similar approach in free agency this year. It was only 9 teams that went crazy with their spending. Seems like either this wasn't a great year for free agents or most teams in the league have concluded that these ridiculous free agent deals are rarely worth it.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Washington Redskins will be hosting two-time Pro Bowler and 2013 second-team All-Pro Vernon Davis today.
Davis, 32, is a native of Washington, D.C., and attended the University of Maryland before being taken with the sixth-overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft.
The tight end also has a connection to current Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan when the two were together with the San Francisco 49ers.
During his rookie season, Davis, appeared in 10 games with eight starts, recording 20 receptions for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Davis hauled in his first career touchdown in his NFL debut, as he tallied a 31-yard score against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 10, 2006.
Twice during his career Davis has logged at least 10 touchdowns in a season, as he recorded 13 touchdowns during both the 2009 and 2013 seasons.
In 2009, he also recorded a career-high 965 receiving yards on 78 receptions.
Davis has also been a threat to break off long receptions, too, as he’s hauled in 93 catches of 20 or more yards and 19 catches of 40 or more yards during his 11 NFL seasons.
From 2008-2012, Davis appeared and started all 80 of the 49ers’ regular season games.
Davis also has also produced in the playoffs, as he has 600 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 11 career playoff games.
Davis started the 2015 season with the 49ers before being traded to the Denver Broncos on Nov. 2.
While Davis would record just 20 receptions for 201 yards in nine regular season games for the Broncos, he was a veteran leader for a team that would go on to win Super Bowl 50.
For his career, Davis has totaled 461 receptions for 5,841 yards and 55 touchdowns.

You know something I find interesting about free agency this year? Three guys that we let walk have already signed with other teams: Keenan Robinson, Tom Compton and Frank Kearse. Safe to say Morris and Griffin will make it at least five before long.
Just seems different from past years where most of the guys we released went on to their future careers outside of the NFL. Am I completely off base on that?

No, you're right but the strategy is entirely different under Scot McCloughan than it was under anyone before Scot McCloughan. He's building a team capable of competing for the next decade, not the next season.
To use an expression that needs to die, OK, two expressions that need to die, at the end of the day it's a process.

this staff/FO only keep players that really fit with what they really need - in the past we have kept players because of their 'potential'
this franchise is now being managed by guys that know what they're doing - their strategy is to build for the long term not just next season

Yeah I get that - no problem with what the FO is doing. My point is I think its interesting that we've been releasing guys who are good enough to make other teams. Seemed like there was a long stretch where we'd release guys who had started for us, and those guys never got picked up or lasted very long anywhere else.
I'd like to think that's a good sign!

SM did so well in the draft and FA market last with the exception of a guy that got hurt and was lost for the season so I'm confident and not worried about things the this spring, he'll sign a few good guys and draft several other winners. I hope we get another starting OLM in the draft, a big receiver and a lot of defensive help, and I think that is what SM is going to get us. I also hope they sign KC to a 5 year deal so we don't pay have to pay for the franchise tag again.

good point - I really do think that we now have guys in place that are not basing what they do on what "works" for another franchise but what they know will work here - It's all very well to say that this franchise or that franchise "knows what it's doing" and why don't we do this or, why don't we follow that franchise's model ...
this staff and FO are doing what they know will work best for the plan that they have
I'm kind of looking forward to watching this franchise grow under Scot's guidance
