Old Georege would not have been a bad choice in '81
Hello, all,
A few words of defense for George Allen.

If we had gotten George out of retirement / exile in '81, we would have had a grand time. He was not the coach Joe Gibs turned out to be, but George helped to put the foundation down for Joe. And there was nothing quite like a George Allen game against Dallas.
The Skins did not go to a playoff game until I was 22. They had only one winning season in all my sentient years, and that evaporated as quickly as Lombardi's cancer grew. Lombardi spent half that year weeding out the "culture of losing" players.
Then, after a year, George roared into town, demanding that his players had to make the playoffs to avenge the insult that major league baseball had inflicted on the Nation's Capital by moving the new Senators. He mortgaged, gambled, resurrected guys, he brought in a flock of ex-Rams/ex-Bears, like Jack Pardee and Richie Petibon and Mo Pottios, and Diron Talbert. He taught complicated, high intensity defense, and never, never did a team take the Redskins lightly.
So, Joe Gibbs was the better coach, but for other qualities than being younger than George.
