Welcome to the Redskins, Trent "Silverback" Williams. I read through 4 pages of this discussion and not one mention of his nickname! Even Goodell knows it!
Yeah, it's been stated by almost every prominent draft scout and analyst - Trent Williams is a better fit for the ZBS, he was higher on Seattle's board as well for the 6th pick. Okung doesn't have many weaknesses but two of them probably didnt sit well with Shanahan.
1) not a very powerful run blocker
2) not very good run blocking in space - meaning, when he gets to the 2nd level and needs to engage LB's he often looks awkward and/or lost.
Williams is a better fit for this team. Good pick.

His ESPN Draft Profile...
1 = Exceptional; 2 = Above average; 3 = Average; 4 = Below average; 5 = Marginal
Production 2
2006: (7/7) Took over starting ROT job for injured Brandon Braxton versus Missouri, which was his first of seven consecutive starts to begin the season. 2007: (14/6) Played in all 14 games, including six starts at right tackle. 2008: (14/14) Started all 14 games at right tackle; voted first team All-Big 12 by coaches. 2009: (12/12) Moved to left tackle and started in 12 games; also saw action at center due to injury.
Height-Weight-Speed 2
Prototypical height. A bit soft in the middle but certainly has adequate bulk to frame. Top-end speed is above average.
Durability 2
No glaring injuries. Has played in 40 of 41 games the past three seasons (2007-09), including 32 starts. Missed the Oklahoma State game this past season due to a concussion.
Intangibles 4
Has shown some versatility and willingness to put team ahead of self and has lined up at LOT, ROT and OC throughout career. Has a few off the field issues and habits. Questionable overall passion for the game and work ethic. Not a fan of the weight room.
Awareness 2
Overall instincts and awareness are above average but not elite. Has a feel for defenders trying to set him up. Does a nice job of getting helping inside initially and then picking up the oncoming wide defender in slide protection. Can indentify and locate targets quickly when pulling down the line or with short pulls around edge.
Toughness 1
No question about overall toughness. Excellent overall strength and power. Clearly plays with a mean streak. Finishes with consistency.
Pass Protection 2
Shows left tackle feet, balance and lateral agility. Gets set quickly in pass pro. Shows the ability to mirror and slide versus quicker DEs. Is aggressive and effective in short sets. Has shown improved footwork since junior year but still has some inconsistency and can over set at times. Is strong enough to anchor versus the straight-line bull rush but will occasionally get jarred by powerful initial punch. Has had some trouble versus DEs who jar him initially and then burst inside while Williams is still recovering. Only time he gets into trouble in pass pro is when he lunges or over sets which can be coached at the next level.
Run Blocking 1
A road grader that possesses an explosive initial pop and a strong powerbase as an inline blocker. Can generate leverage upon contact to get more than adequate movement on defenders. However, angles are a bit inconsistent and needs polishing with first step. Has enough foot quickness to hook edge and cut off three technique from the backside. Easy mover when pulling down the line and in the open field. Makes a smooth transition when climbing to second level to cut off LB's but can improve angles in this department.

I'm not saying that it's a bad pick. Not at all. Williams is a very good player. Just seems like somewhat of a risky pick at #4 given the concerns about his ability to play LT in the NFL. Okung seemed like the much safer pick.

I find this hilarious. Some people will always be cynical. We groan for an O Tackle for many years, and take one that most scouts agree is better suited for zone blocking, and low and behold, here are the naysayers downing the pick before the guy has even landed in Washington.
Some of you are the same people who claimed we should have traded down to acquire more picks, as if we were going to get a better player or players later in the draft. I guess that would have satisfied you all because it's what YOU wanted.
I like the pick.

Let's not forget this either:
Nestled in Dallas Cowboys territory in east Texas, Longview High School has had a player drafted by the Redskins for the third straight year. The biggest of the three came Thursday night, when Oklahoma tackle Trent Williams became the first high-round offensive lineman selected by the team in a decade.
"They might have to hang a couple of Redskins flags across the city of Longview," Williams said with a laugh.
Williams joins receiver Malcolm Kelly (2008, second round) and linebacker Robert Henson (2009, sixth round) as Longview products on the Redskins roster. Williams even stayed with Kelly for a couple of days during a pre-draft visit to Washington.

This kid is an UPSIDE PICK. He DID NOT play well in college, at least from a pass blocking perspective. THE TEAM KNOWS THAT. They are gambling on his athletic upside, hoping they can work on his footwork and hand placement. It IS a gamble and is not AT ALL a sure thing. The team is aware of that.
The senior closed out his career with a string of 39 starting assignments, allowing just two assisted sacks during his final two seasons. His 230 knockdown blocks and 22 touchdown resulting blocks were the most by any active Big Twelve Conference offensive lineman since the start of the 2008 season.
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1123699Bradford was injured on a safety blitz btw.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

I've watched some clips of these players and read dozens of opinions. Doesn't make me an expert, it just means I have a little 2nd hand knowledge.
Mel Kiper never worked as a scout in the NFL. Neither has McShay. You see where Mel's 4th overall best player ended up tonight didn't you? Clausen was passed up by basically the whole league. No way they were all wrong. Mel also said Tebow was a 3rd round talent. Well he went in the 1st and supposedly Buffalo was working feverishly to trade up to draft him in the 1st also.
I think Shanahan has more knowledge about what players will work in his offense than Kiper or McShay. Most scouts had Okung and Williams within a few spots of each other anyway.

Let's give the coach AND the new Redskin player a little respect and some benefit of doubt. At least until the season starts.

He's athletic, but not so strong. 23 reps at the combine is pretty sad for an offensive linemen.
Maybe he does 70 reps of 400 on the squat. His nickname is Silverback, he's obviously pretty strong.

Very happy about this pick. Trant fits this team very well. How about Haynesworth for Clausen to the Rams???

I think this is a great selection. yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeessssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it had been Okung, I would say the same thing. we got a Oline guy that is sorely needed. He is better than anyone one the line now regardless of his short-comings.

Possibly the best news was:
Notably, Williams said he didn't meet with Dan Snyder during his Washington trip, another sign that the Redskins' owner has relinquished control of the roster to Shanahan and Allen. Dinners with Snyder were a standard feature of big-name player visits in past years.
Woohoo!!!

He's gonna play RT. No way is Trent Williams ready to be a LT in the NFL.
Shanahan believes different.
Though Williams played much of his career at right tackle and also started a game at center, Shanahan said the Redskins will immediately pencil Williams in at left tackle.
The 6-foot-5, 314-pound Williams earned consensus first-team All-Big 12 Conference honors after shifting to left tackle as a senior and will step in to replace veteran Chris Samuels, who retired this offseason

Canes is just looking for a reason to bench

. He's going to play and let's hope he's not on any stat sheet at the end of the game. History shows that Shanny knows how to pick guys that are lineman.

And thank you Washington for taking Williams instead of Okung. Williams puts up 23 reps of 225lbs while Okung puts up 38 reps. Okung allowed only one sack all last year. Yeah, welcome Trent Williams and please remember to yell "look out" after each snap.

Eh, I'm skeptical. But Shanahan knows what he's doing and has formed great offensive lines in the past. Hopefully he's right about Trent Williams.

The Skins have more than asked about Jammal Brown from NO, I hear he has already taken the medical test and he passed...

How do we pass on Okung? Trent Williams was the third or fourth best tackle. Will Trent be ready to block the likes of Demarcus Ware, Trent Cole, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenura and now Brandon Graham!
What a gamble this is. Shanahan is going to learn quick about the physicality of the NFC East. We will see if his zone blocking schemes can work.
This is the only move I disagree with. Williams at no.4 seems to me to be a bit of a strech. Why not draft Okung or Berry?
22 reps on the bench tells me Williams did not put in a lot of work in the weight room. He will need to get stronger in the NFC East. We have premier pass rushers on every team we face.
I dont mean to rain on the parade. Williams does seem like a good kid. Make me eat my words Williams. Prove me wrong!

This was a great pick for the Redskins.
Whether or not Williams was the best "overall" tackle in the draft, he was no doubt the best tackle for the new Zone Blocking scheme.
For the first time in a long time I feel like the Skins have a plan, and are finally headed in the right direction.

Thank you Trent Williams . . . for not being a QB.
I was terrified that the Redskins would take a QB.

Yeah, pretty much everyone else loves this pick. Todd McShay says this is an excellent fit, Mel Kiper loved the pick, Mike Shannahan and Bruce Allen loved the pick... this guy is flat out the most athletic lineman to come out of the draft in years, coming to a team where he already knows a few of the players, into an ideal situation for him, on a team that badly needs help at o-line...
Yeah, terrible pick

Trent Williams had one of the worst bench presses at the combine, so calling him "strong" might be a bit of a stretch.
Your post states calling him "strong" is a bit of a stretch, then the article you mention notes that he has excellent overall strength and power. A mediocre bench press is not the the end all definition of strength.
I like the pick. Maybe not as much as Okung, but they addressed a much needed hole.

Trent is heavier and faster than Okung. Will fit better in the ZBS.
Okung is ready now, he is talented, his technique is there.
YOu can coach technique, you cannot make okung heavier and faster and more athletic. I like this pick, actually either way we cannot miss. It's not like we get anything to say about who ShanAllen picks.
