In this day of caponomics, you can NOT pay everyone top dollar...you must have some players on the roster that are making a lot less money. We already overpaid for Springs, we overpaid for LeVar (less the 6 mil, of course), we gave Washington and Griffin a bunch of money, Wynn is due to make 4 mil in 05, Bowen and Taylor are making some cash, Barrow got a nice deal. If we don't take some fiscal action now, our 2006 roster will be a who's who ...as in, who are these guys? I don't believe we should pay Smoot a 10 mil bonus. Let our current guys do the job, draft another young CB if necessary. I don't want to overpay Pierce either. Our 2006 cap is very very ugly. We can't wait until after 2005 to fix it either - we must start now.

We need to change out 10-12 guys this year - plus a couple others if we trade away (Gardner) or release some guys (maybe McCants, Rock, Wynn, etc...) Sign 2-3 "cheaper" FA's like Walt Harris, and hang onto our draft picks...stay out the bidding for big name-big contract guys. We can't afford them and I don't believe that we need them either. Let's try the NE way - not the SF way. Look at them now.

Our 2006 Salary cap will be perfectly fine. All you people who are into the doom and gloom that the media and uninformed like to spread need to do some homework and quit believing everything your told by the media. We currently have a cap value of 108 million for 2006. It will obviously not stay that way. The cap for 2006 will be at or around 90 nillion. A couple examples of how we will cut our cap hit by restructuring...

Chris Samuels has a 2006 cap hit of 11.3 million. His bonus hit is 3 million. If we cut him, that's 3 mil in dead money, but that trims 8 million off our 108 million. Say he restructures. He signs a 7 year deal with a 10 mil bonus worth 50 mil. It would be backloaded of course meaning the first year or two he makes the minimum for salary. His 2006 cap hit would be about 4.9 million. Vet minimum of 455k plus previous 3 mil of the bonus and then 1.5 mil of the new bonus. That one deal saves us 6.8 million off of the 108 million total cap. His 2007 cap hit would be even cheaper because his old bonus would be gone...

Renaldo Wynn has a 600k hit for his bonus but makes 4.5 mil the next two seasons. He will restructure or be cut. Accelerated cap hit is 1.2 mil. That would still save us 3.3 million.

We will also have the ability to cut after June 1st which would make most of the hit taken in 2006 minimal while taking the brunt of the hit in 2007 on those players cut. The current 2007 cap for us is 75 million. And at this time, there is no salary cap after 2006. So who knows what will happen by that time. I'm sure the NFL will keep the salary cap as is, but by 2007 it will likely be around the 95 million area...

If Snyder has proven anything in his time here, it's that he knows how to negotiate the cap better than anyone else in the league...

Scott -- I don't disagree that we could make some moves to reduce the cap but here's where we are right now with JUST 16 players:

Player 2006 cap hit
(in mils) Comment
LeVar 12.0 probably won't redo this, would cost us
a lot of cap space to trade now
Barrow 3.4 I don't believe he got a huge bonus so
we could cut or redo w/out harm
Bowen 2.4 We could redo or cut w/out harm
Brunell 5.4 We'd have a huge cap hit if we do any-
thing with him - 8 mil SB (less than 1
yr of it has been allocated to cap.
Coles 6.86 He signed a few years back so his SB
wouldn't be be too bad if we re-did
his contract.
Daniels 2.6 I don't believe he got much SB
Griffin 4.88 Just signed him, can't redo it yet
Jansen 5.2 He signed his contract a few years
back, maybe he'll redo to spread the
hit over more years
Portis 5.47 Just signed and huge SB
Ramsey 1.8 He's slumming it in this group
Samuels 11.0 He'll need to redo it or be cut
Springs 5.5 Just signed it with big SB
Taylor 3.12 Way worth this money
Thomas 4.5 Signed a few years back, will need
to redo it soon, he ain't worth 4.5
Washington 5.167 Just signed him, big SB
Wynn 4.583 Re-do or release him

While there are a few here we could re-do or release, there are a number of others that would kill us in escalated SB money if we trade, release, or redo their contracts. Remember, this is only 16 guys. How about Smoot, Pierce, #9 pick, etc...

We must be fiscally responsible this year. It will help us so much in the out years.

the cap will be close to 100 mil in 06, after the new tv deals are worked. and we'll need every penny of it, just to stay afloat.

LeVar 12.0 probably won't redo this, would cost us

6.5mil is a roster bonus and it is believed that there is a clause in his contract that binds Lavar to restructure the roster bonus which would lower his cap hit in 2006 from 12.14 to 6.72

Barrow 3.4 I don't believe he got a huge bonus so
we could cut or redo w/out harm

Most of Barrow’s money is salary so if he’s not here we come out ahead. 2.08 left from the signing bonus and a 2004 salary of 2.1 If we let him go now (it wont happen) that would free up 3.4 for 2006

Bowen 2.4 We could redo or cut w/out harm
Brunell 5.4 We'd have a huge cap hit if we do any-
thing with him - 8 mil SB (less than 1
yr of it has been allocated to cap.

Bowen will be here
I wish Brunell would go away but we are stuck with him for at least another year

Coles 6.86 He signed a few years back so his SB
wouldn't be be too bad if we re-did
his contract.

9.28 mil left on his SB

Daniels 2.6 I don't believe he got much SB

2.4 mil left on his

Samuels 11.0 He'll need to redo it or be cut

He’ll redo his contract this year so that number will change

Thomas 4.5 Signed a few years back, will need
to redo it soon, he ain't worth 4.5

Thomas is another one with a cap number that’s less than the salary but like Jansen they’ll be re worked

We must be fiscally responsible this year. It will help us so much in the out years.

:hmm: We’re still talking about “The Danny”

fredp45, obviously your much more informed about the cap than I thought. I apologize for being harsh, which after rereading my post, I think I was. I just get tired of hearing about how screwed we are from the media and people who just listen to the media. You are NOT one of those people.

I know we are pushing the envelope, but we do still have maneuvering room. The big problem with this teams cap has been paying players that don't work out. I think Snyder has turned the corner there and is now mainly bringing in guys that will be here longer and finish out their contracts. That will help tremendously by not carrying as much dead money. We also must keep drafting well. This has been accomplished the past couple seasons.

We probably would be better off if we just got under the cap and didn't sign any FAs. Just stick with the draftees coming in and who we've already got. The contracts that concern me are Arrington, Springs and Portis. Nothing can really be done about them in the short term. It's hard to believe they structured Springs contract like they did. They should have backloaded it more. It will definitely have to be restructured in a couple years.
