Gotta love the interviews with players and coaches that are so into 'the game' and having a really hard work ethic and how rewarding it is to work so hard and have 'good things' happen to THE TEAM

nobody will EVER convince me that ANYONE that chooses to do drugs will be as effective a player in the NFL as those that choose not to - AND to choose drugs over your team is just such a STUPID mistake - I can't believe that you'd screw EVERYTHING up after all the time spent getting here
I hope that if these guys chose that route that their 'mistakes' will be highlited by the media and fans forever

In today's NFL, with the drug testing, there is no way you would even see Dexter on the field

Under the old CBA (I'm not sure if this has changed), a first offense usually amounted to a fine and enhanced testing. Due to the confidentiality provisions of the program, first offenses usually aren't reported unless accompanied by an arrest, etc. What's not clear at this point is whether the punishment is considered aggravated enforcement of a first offense under the old CBA terms, whether this is a second offense for each under the old CBA terms, or whether the 2011 CBA has a new substance abuse policy enforcement schedule that is coming into effect here. So it's totally unclear at this point what would happen on any subsequent offense, but the year+application for reinstatement is not out of the question.

Edit: small discrepancy in reporting here. Trotter claims that these tests occurred during the season, after a grace period that followed execution of the CBA. Jason Cole's original report from November quotes players claiming that the promised grace period never happened; that testing began on day 2 of training camp. Won't make a difference in any appeal, but worth noting for casual interest.

This could have been a lot worse. At least two of the top-5 players on the team (Orakpo, Kerrigan, Landry would be the other 3 in case you're wondering ) will be preserved health-wise till next season.

Both of them should serve the 4 games this year so we're ready to roll starting next season.

I have no problem with NFL players choosing to do drugs

just like in life - it's your choice
if a player buys, uses, OR trys drugs that are banned, then he deserves to be banned

the team should just ask "did you choose to let your team down?"
IF the answer is "yes" - let him go

REALLY SIMPLE - NOBODY should be on a team that does not want to be there

First, it was definitely pot.
Second, lots of players smoke during the off season, and clean up before the testing begins.
Third, because of the lockout, several players thought there would be a chance to get clean before the testing began.
Fourth, I agree with Cowboykillerz, if you're going to smoke pot, they make way too much money not to be prepared by having a supply of the head shop drink (basically vitamin B and coloring to mask watered down pee) on hand so they will test negative.
Fifth, SJ, cocaine only stays in your body for about a day, so the Dexters and LTs of the NFL could definitely play in today's game and avoid detection.
Sixth, and lastly, unless you have failed a previous test, then once you have been tested at the beginning of the season, I'm pretty sure that in-season testing is not done randomly, so all bets are off.

And to think that we could have drafted a level-headed legitimate left tackle in Okung.

Regardless of your personal opinions on marijuana's effects, the fact that they seemingly can't put the weed down long enough to work out and play football is a serious problem.

Sorry, but I see no place on the team for ANYONE who is doing drugs. Whether it's HGH, Steroids, or Marijuana, I don't care. I have no interest in ever seeing either of those two in a Redskins uniform again.

I feel strongly about this too, but dropping a former 4th overall pick, and a second rounder only hurts the team.

They say marijuana isn't addictive, or habit forming, but these guys can't seem to lay off. Maybe they need some help. If they can learn from their mistakes and become key contributors then we need them.

No, we don't need them. I feel as strongly about this as I do about the potential new co-worker I lost two weeks ago because he was so stupid he failed a drug test/physical that he'd known about for more than two weeks before he took it. There is no need for ANYONE to be doing that crap. Period. I say this as someone who has never touched it myself and who got a roommate expelled from college over having it (MJ) in the dorm room.

This is really simple for me

If these players chose to do ANYTHING that could put their playing time at risk, they should not be a part of this franchise

we have many issues - we do NOT need players that cannot commit to being a part of the team

Players that put their playing time at risk are letting the team and themselves down, BIG TIME

Davis will be a free agent next year, so they can't trade him and Trent is in his second year of his rookie contract under the old CBA, so he's not going anywhere.

I was so looking forward to watching Davis become a really good TE in B&G

I hope he's not here - I could care less how great a TE he becomes - he should go play for the pukes who love druggies

Williams has to stay here, I understand that but I hope the coaches & everyone keep him on the straight and narrow
Unless he shows CLEARLY that he's learned he also should be let go when his contract is up

What people are missing is...

Shanny's first pick as head coach of our team has tested positive at least three times an hasn't been here two full seasons. At least he didn't give up two draft picks to a division rival for a QB that would be out of the league in... wait... nevermind.

At least now we will get to see the young, talented depth that he has put together... Damn, that's right... we have no young talented depth at tackle or tight end. Paulsen is OK but he's the only active TE on the roster.

That means Davis will be back and will be millions cheaper than if he had used some restraint and common sense
