Yeah he's our H-Back... what's your point? CC isn't our tight end... Robert Royal is.

H-Back and TE are NOT the same thing at all... just because one is a hybrid of the other, doesn't mean that we don't need both.

Having said that... I'd look for a TE in free agency BEFORE the draft even happens.

I think Zach Hilton from the Saints would be a nice low cost pick up (nice hands, tall and a pretty good blocker).

Just because Gibbs makes a hybrid position and calls Cooley his H-back doesn't mean Cooley isn't really a pass catching tight end. I saw how many people on this site were pissed that Cooley was dissed in Pro Bowl voting at the TE position and instead was put in the Fullback column for voting. Since there is no traditional h-back position and since Sellers takes on a decent amount of the fullback duties that a typical h-back would do, Cooley is used more as a TE than anything else. I don't care what Gibbs calls him, he is basically our latter day version of Clint Didier (albeit alot faster and better hands).

Having said that... I'd look for a TE in free agency BEFORE the draft even happens.

Here we agree. No sense in draftign a TE when we have Cooley, Royal, etc... that can get us what we need.

No one has mentioned this but we need OL depth badly...while this isn't the most sexy thing in the world, it's critical. We are so lucky to have Ray Brown (lucky to have a 43 year old guard!).

I really believe that OL is the heart of a football team. If Ray Brown retires, who do we have that we really trust to play 5-6 games or even one playoff game?

Here are our reserves after Ray Brown...anyone nervous??

1) Guard Jim Jones first year from NDame. (Probably smart, as ND is a good school but had you heard of him before?)
2) Tackle Jim Molinaro second year from NDame (okay backup...but I'd be kinda nervous if we had a right handed QB and Samuels went down)
3) Guard Ikechuku Ndukwe rookie from Northwestern (Probably smart as NWestern is a super school but who is he?)
4) Center Cory Raymer in his 50th year from Wisconsin (give me a break, this guy is so washed up even Marty (the guy who loved OL) dumped him - 2 years ago!!!)

I think we can find an aging Guard in Free Agency but we'll need to use our 3rd rounder (at least) on either a center or tackle. Maybe even our 2nd rounder on a RT...probably can't find a LT worth taking at the 50th pick.

We may have to find a FAgent DE, CB, WR, K, P...and draft OL at every pick!!! ok, I overdid that but I truly believe OL is a must...and I love our starters but the reserves scare me.

After the free agency period we'll have a good idea of what we might be drafting. Linemen both offensive and defensive are always a must.

Anybody else think the Bronco fans are getting annoyed with our progress

The trading of our first rounder for 2006 is going further down the board than 26 if we can keep this up

Royal are you joking, he has bricks for hands and he can't block for jack. They don't need a Schokey, but they need a modern Donnie Warren, which we clearly don't have.

I think the way it works as a result of the playoffs is that our 1st rounder will be the 21st or 22nd (depending on whether New England goes further than we do), or if we make it to the Super Bowl it will be the 31st if we lose, or the 32nd if we win...

Royal is hot and cold in the hands department. But he does block decently. So hopefully more hands drills will help him. However, I'm still amazed that you would want to waste a draft pick on a TE when we clearly could pick up a good blocking TE in FA.

while its true we may not a have a great pass rushing DE, we still have good depth on the definsive line. more depth than we have at wr, cb and ol. i think these need to be priorities in the off season, weather its fa or the draft. i dont think getting a DE is as pressing.

The pressing need IMHO is at both lines (O-line and D-line) and yes I do think we need a more dominating DE than the ones we have. I'm not saying they aren't good but they do disappear at times.

Next is O-line depth. It is sad that our top backup on the offensive line is old enough to be Sean Taylor's father. This is a glaring weakness in our offense.

Next is WR depth. I'd put DB depth here but our corners, when healthy allow us to be reasonably deep. With Patten out there is not another deep threat to take double teams off of Moss. Check out, other than the stupid defensive play calling by the Giants and Cowboys, how well Moss did after Patten went out with his injury. Teams are keying on the fact that without Moss we basically have no deep threat. We need some WR's that are reliable, healthy, have good hands and can stretch the field. Thrash? Ain't it. Jacobs? Gimme a break. Farris? Hasn't done much since we brought him up. We need WR depth.

Next is DB depth. Bowen is essentially playing out the string of his career here and it will end soon. Jimoh is great on special teams and is getting better in pass coverage (did I just say that?) but still we could be better. Springs can't stay healthy this season and has me worried as he is getting older. Harris is at best a nickel. Rogers shows promise but has been injured and it is too soon to tell. The others are ok in spot duty but too new to put my faith in.

After this we need some depth in any other area you can think of. I'd say OLB so we can start developing another Antonio Pierce or Lemar Marshall and have them in the wings.

Anyway these are my thoughts as of right now of where we should be focusing going into the draft. But since we have no #1 we won't get a stud DE, so our actual draft will probably go for a WR or OL first.

i think we're all on the same page here! No conversation or consideration of what to do with the draft picks we have can be done until we know what our needs are after the coaches and scouts get through the free agency period and we see how many of the "needs" were addressed and what is "available".
I also would agree though that both the lines are the prime concern and then the other positions. To be successful in my opinion you have to have good to very good linemen. The 2 keys in no particular order are to be able to protect your QB (and provide running & passing lanes) and to be able to pressure the other QB. This is where it begins and then the other positions make for a complete team.
The other very important ingredient is to have the players that suit your system and your team. I think that Gibbs and Williams know the type of character and talent that they want and that factors into their decisions a lot more than someone's stats with another team or another system.
These guys are not known for selecting talent, they seem to select the potential talent and then give the player the opportunity to display it on the field with the rest of the team.
Gibbs has never been all that big on the draft - he likes to find the people that have already shown they can play in the NFL and then take them to another level because he saw the potential to be better.

can anyone picture the moss brothers wreaking havoc on our opponents defenses week in and week out...

although if we do draft another wideout then i believe we would have to get a taller, stronger type than moss... but.. that would be a sight to behold.

What about DE Darryl Tapp to fill a more obvious need and should be available in round two or we could use anothe WR and I like Mike Hass from Oregon State
