year ago, the Redskins ranked 29th in passing yardage and Baltimore finished 31st. Both expect things to be different this year.
Baltimore made Jim Fassel offensive coordinator to spice up a run-oriented attack and signed free agent wide receiver Derrick Mason, who last year caught 96 passes with Tennessee. The Redskins, meanwhile, added wide receivers David Patten and Santana Moss to an offense that coach Joe Gibbs hopes will be more inventive in 2005.
It didn’t look that way Saturday.
After the Ravens got a 38-yard field goal from Matt Stover, Ramsey went 5-for-8 but failed to move the team, mainly because Deion Sanders had two sacks and Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs had one apiece.
“Pass protection didn’t look good, and we looked sluggish,” Gibbs said. “Anytime you don’t do well it’s a concern, but it is the first time out and we had a lot of people in there.”

Team-by-team reports, predictions
Tackling the quarterback was not allowed, but Sanders got a kick out of tagging Ramsey before he could make a throw, one benefit of playing in the 46 scheme of new defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.
“I’ve never been in a position where I blitzed on occasion, but now I can drop into coverage or blitz,” Sanders said.
Suggs, the Ravens’ primary pass rusher, joked, “My job is definitely threatened. I’ve got to go back to the drawing board.”
Baltimore’s second possession, which featured the second-string units, included a 44-yard completion from Wright to Clarence Moore.
Afterward, Gibbs was left wondering what more he can do to improve his lackluster offense.
“Offensively, I think we were sluggish there at first, and I’m sure Patrick will say the same thing,” he said. “So we’ll just take that as a lot of work to do on offense when we get back at it.”

Muzzled mutts, terrific NFL tot, a Twin’s trouble, and more.
Said Ramsey: “I think I missed some throws early that were pretty routine. After that, we did a little bit better.”
Lewis intercepted a Ramsey pass during 7-on-7 drills, drawing huge cheers. Moments later, Boller tossed a long touchdown pass to Mason.
There were no serious injuries in the scrimmage. Redskins wide receiver Taylor Jacobs sprained his left toe and will have an MRI on Sunday, Washington cornerback Shawn Springs tweaked a hamstring and Ravens defensive back Dale Carter bruised his right quad.
Washington played without linebacker LaVar Arrington, who is still recovering from offseason knee surgery. The Redskins were also without defensive tackles Cornelius Griffin (shoulder strain) and Brandon Noble (knee), cornerback Walt Harris (pulled quad) and their top draft pick, cornerback Carlos Rogers (ankle sprain). Also, defensive end Renaldo Wynn was excused because his father-in-law died Friday.
Baltimore was without running back Jamal Lewis, who is expected to report Sunday or Monday after completing a stay in an Atlanta halfway house. The Ravens also played without defensive tackle Kelly Gregg (shoulder), tight end Todd Heap (shoulder, ankle) and their No. 1 draft pick, wide receiver Mark Clayton, who watched from the sideline after signing a five-year, $8.2 million contract 2½ hours before the scrimmage began.

Redskins' Offense Struggles in Scrimmage vs. Ravens
By David Ginsburg
Associated Press
Saturday, August 6, 2005; 3:51 PM
The Baltimore Ravens' revamped offense showed more improvement than the Washington Redskins' upgraded attack during a scrimmage between the neighboring rivals Saturday.
Neither starting quarterback produced a touchdown, but Kyle Boller got the Ravens a field goal before Patrick Ramsey was sacked four times during his two drives.
BIGGEST IMPACT?
"We still have a long ways to go," Boller said, "but it was good to get the momentum of taking that first drive down there and getting points on the board."
Baltimore's second unit got a field goal and a 32-yard touchdown pass from Anthony Wright to Patrick Johnson. Washington's second team did very little: Mark Brunell threw an interception and failed to move into field goal range.
Ravens coach Brian Billick was delighted with the performance of his top two quarterbacks.
"Both seemed controlled and poised," Billick said. "Kyle seemed in command."
The scrimmage drew a crowd of 35,517, most of whom paid up to $12 to enter the Ravens' home stadium.

Say it with me. Jumoh must GO!!! He was toast all day at the scrimmage and committed a pass interference. This guy should not be on this team as he gets burnt EVERY TIME he hits the field!

I expected our O to suck. I have no sympathy for them because it was a no brainer to pick Mike Williams at No. 9 and Heath Miller at No. 25. If we did that we could have had a high powered offense, but instead another 30th ranked passing attack. Te and Reciever were by far our two biggest needs and it was this stick to fundamentals and D crap that lead to this dump drafting.

Darn it....our offense still sucks. And to top it off.....Brunell did BETTER than Ramsey. What is going on? Are we bound for another crappy season with all defense and no offense?
I know it's only a scrimmage...but it doesn't look good. Doesn't look good at all. They better start working their behinds off or we're heading towards another season like the one we just went through.

Would you like some cheese to go with all that whine. That's aged whining at it's best - the draft was 4 months ago.
As far as the performance today. It was a scrimmage( the 1st time they've went full speed against non teammates since January). If everyone out there looked great something would be wrong, to have mistakes made now is the right time. They will go into the filmroom and see what was done wrong and go from there.
This was a scrimmage that everyone played and playing time was probaly equal. Next week Ramsey and the starting offense should be on the field for atleast a quarter and that should tell us more.
From what I understand Portis and Betts never touched the ball today during the scrimmage

I was at the game and there is alot work that needs to be done on offense. I was really amazed by Campbell's performance. This guy is going to be a "Hall Of Famer" and our number one QB sooner then everyone thinks. He is the complete package, trust me. Me and my older son were in the 1st row on the 45 yard line and Portis came up and gave a pair of gloves away and signed a bunched of autographs. Someone in the stands about 3 rows up yelled to Brunell for a gaderade and he tossed one up there with no problems,it had to be least a 10 yard pass. Sean Taylor was also out there signing some autographs, I hope everything works out with him and he becomes a loyal redskin. It was a "Great Day" at M&T.

I don't know man...I don't see them changing dramatically. They'll probably get a little better...but don't expect a high powered offense. It's clear...our strength is our defense..not our offense.
Went to scrimmage....

Ade Jimoh is horrible....burnt a few times....Santana Moss made an amazing one handed grab on the sidelines. Ramsey looked shaky but had some nice passes. Antonio Brown is fast as hell.

ey looked good

If you watched the scrimmage or heard it, it was mainly passing the ball, not alot of running, especially from Portis or Betts. Dont lose hope on our offense just yet or hype it up to the Colts level.

I was there too, here's a few things I noticed:
1. Ade Jamoh did get burned for a TD, it was ugly. Enough to make me pick up the roster sheet to see who the hell #23 was....Ade Jimoh.
2. Offense did not look good, and the defense did not look that good either (not as crisp as last season). Sean Taylor is a BEAST. I really hope he gets off this gun charge crap cause he's a monster on the field.
Like last year Griffin, Washinton, and Taylor (played w/ 2nd team) looked good.
3. Rock Cartright ran like the bad version of Ron Dayne, the one that hits the line of scrimmage and goes down. He had no burst. The o line did not dominate but they did alright. Their pass protection wasn't that good. The shotgun looked nice.
4. Ten foot tall Clarence Moore jumped and caught a nice 45 yard pass right in front of Gibbs as if he was trying to show Gibbs what a TALL wide receiver can do for you.
5. The team as a whole looked rusty, not what I expected from a team with 99% attendance all off season. The short, quick passes are still in use. I hate that freaking play. Throw to the sideline and the guy gets tackled immediately at the line of scrimmage.
6. One week before the 1st pre season game, I'm hoping they have a tough practice. I wonder if the recent heat has taken a toll on the Skins.
Here's a break down from the Post:
Redskins Get to Take On Somebody Else
Defense Outperforms Offense in Scrimmage vs. Baltimore
By Nunyo Demasio
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, August 7, 2005; E01
BALTIMORE, Aug. 6 -- Washington Redskins linebacker Marcus Washington sprinted toward the quarterback on a blitz. He slowed down in time to avoid contact with Kyle Boller as Baltimore Ravens Coach Brian Billick, wearing a straw hat, blew the play dead. Under scrimmage rules, defenders weren't allowed to hit quarterbacks, and the onus was on the head coach to halt play when defenders had a clear path to the quarterback.
The loosened structure was no different than in practices during the first week of training camp, with regimented two-hour sessions highlighted by 11-on-11 drills.
However, the Redskins' players were excited about practicing against another team Saturday in front of 35,517 fans at M&T Bank Stadium, even if extensive stats weren't being kept. Washington couldn't resist punctuating the play by leaping high, then shimmying, his trademark celebration in real games.
"It was a lot of fun," Washington said. "Anytime you get a chance to compete, I always think you should go out and do your best. It gave us a chance to actually hit somebody else beside ourselves and kind of see some things on film."
Despite allowing a few big passing plays, Washington's defense exhibited its attacking style while playing without key starters. The unit performed markedly better than the offense, which looked mostly sluggish behind quarterbacks Patrick Ramsey, Mark Brunell and rookie Jason Campbell. Pass protection was particularly shaky, but Coach Joe Gibbs said he was satisfied with the opportunity to evaluate several players who are on the bubble.
"I think it was a real good day. Now we'll have to see. Obviously it was very rough for us" on offense, said Gibbs, whose team has its preseason opener Saturday night against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte. "We have a lot of good film.
"Anytime you don't do well, it's a concern. But I think it is our first time out. We had a lot of people in there. So that was our main objective: We wanted to really evaluate everybody, particularly the guys past our starters."
On the first play of a seven-on-seven drill, linebacker Ray Lewis intercepted a Ramsey pass intended for H-back Chris

ey near the right sideline. The play brought a roar from the crowd and a grimace from Ramsey. "I missed some throws early that were pretty routine throws," said Ramsey, who completed 5 of 8 passes, "but I felt like after that we did a little bit better."
The Redskins defense's first unit played without several starters, and the opening lineup included cornerbacks Rufus Brown and Ade Jimoh. Starting cornerback Shawn Springs pulled his hamstring during early drills and was kept out as a precautionary measure. And defensive end Renaldo Wynn didn't play because of the death of his father-in-law Friday night. The defense showed its familiar tenacity with obscure players, but the secondary allowed some long passing plays. "We missed too many tackles and gave up too many big plays," said safety Matt Bowen, who played with the third team. "It will be a good teaching film."
The practice was composed of 15 minutes of special-teams play, 30 minutes of seven-of-seven drills, then 11-on-11 drills: Each offense was scheduled for four sets of 10-play drives, starting at their 35-yard line. But with the scheduled two-hour practice running 15 minutes over after Campbell guided Washington's third set, Billick waved to officials that his team was done.
Gibbs was impressed by the size of the crowd, which included more than 4,500 walk-up spectators. (Tickets were $7 for lower-bowl seats and $12 behind the end zones.) Although the crowd was dominated by Ravens fans, the Redskins had a contingent of fans. "I saw a lot of Redskins jerseys," Gibbs said.
A group of roughly a dozen men wore yellow T-shirts emblazoned with "Free Sean Taylor," alluding to the safety's pending trial in Miami for a felony count of aggravated assault.
In the scrimmage, Taylor displayed his ball-hawking and hitting skills with while playing with the second team. On one play during 11-on-11 drills, Taylor's helmet flew off when he sprinted past the line of scrimmage for a hard hit on a Ravens tailback. Later, Taylor broke up a touchdown pass to an open receiver in the end zone. When a completion appeared imminent, Taylor sprinted a few yards and batted the ball down.
"I always kid [that] we keep him in a cage and feed him raw meat. On game day, we turn him loose," Washington said. "He's a heck of a player. We're glad to have him back."
Brunell, who was 4 for 8 with one interception, faced an opponent for the first time since Nov. 14 last year -- a Week 10 loss to Cincinnati -- when Ramsey replaced him.
"I told my wife the same thing: It'll be fun to be out in a stadium, even though it's just a scrimmage," Brunell said

Oh boy. Ok Ramsey usually practices well, so idont think taht him playing well in training camp means anything. However Ramsey looked really bad out there. He looked like a rookie, he really did. I have never seen him so confused. Campbell did better and looked better. This is not good. I stil ahve lots of faith in pat, its just that was horrible.
Granted hte o line was absolutely horrible, but still.
Also, i just saw someone at the top of a page on this thread say we should of got mike willisms (i agree) but then heath miller at 25???? his name is chris cooley, hes our perfect fit h-back..... come on now.

I was there obviously, as Terri said. And I noticed alot. I'm only going to comment a little bit because I'm exhausted after a day of fun in the sun with THN.
First of all our entire time was off today. There was just something missing. I liked the aggresiveness of the O-line during their drills, we actually saw Jansen knock some guy on his rear, and after last year that was actually a relieving site. The other thing that I'll mention is that some of our fans are total boneheads. If I bother to support a team and wear their colors I would sure as hell know who is on the team. When the announcer said "pass was intended for Rod Gardner". There were not many Redskin's fans that actually noticed. I mean come on, the dude was sent to NC quite a while ago and it was HUGE story. If you are not going to bother reading weekly news at least then take that jersey off your freaking back and give it to some who is actually a fan.

Granted hte o line was absolutely horrible, but still.
When the O-line plays like crap there is no way a Qb will do well. A qb can't throw on his back. Another huge mistake we did this offseason was keeping Samuels, he sucks, they should have traded his ass. The only good O-lineman we have worth keeping is Thomas and Jansen and thats it. Casy I have not seen play so I don't know about him.

Traded Samuels? Obvious proof of a complete lack of knowledge of the situation... yeah we should have traded him and ate the cap hit and then that way we could have paid a big chunk of change to not have a left tackle.... brilliant plan.

No censorship here, but May called and it wants it's topic back.
This topic is about a scrimage that was played on Sat.8-6-2005 not something that should/could have happened months ago.

Keep the thread on topic. You can post something that has to do with the thread, move your post to another thread... or just wait for the axe to drop if you can't wrap your head around it.
That isn't censoring, that's abiding by the rules that have been laid out for the forums... something you obviously struggle with... and your warnings are wearing very, very thin.

Preseason is overrated. I'd rather have thie team clicking during the regular season. Steve Spurrier's preseason sucess did not translate into meaningful wins. Just wait till week 1 before people completely bash this team. Hopefully, this team will be better at doing the little things like getting out of the huddle in time, avoiding fulstarts on offense, and avoiding dumb personal fouls.

Wait, Boss, aren't they breaking the rules by steering the topic off to another route intentionally? You know, they're breaking the rules... Maybe you could enforce the rules with a suspension... Or banning...
Also, have I got off probation yet? I still am scared to type the alternate word for heck.

We don't put people on 'suspension', I haven't got a clue what you're talking about... and leave the moderating to the moderators please.

Ok... Sorry, I guess.
Talking about the scrimmage, can someone tell me who Sean Taylor hit? Even a Raven fan told me that Sean Tayl;or knocked someone really good. If anyone could tell me who it was, I'd like to use the name as a punchline. :lol
My opinion on yesterdays scrimmage...

1. It was extremely hot.
2. Our running game still sucks. Last year it seemed like there was just a jumble of bodies and no holes, it seemed to be like that again.
3. Ramsey....Ramsey threw a stupid INT. He picked it up towards the latter half but I was very unimpressed.
4. Brunell looked just as bad as Ramsey but he was only throwing 1 yard passes for the most part. Athony Wright of the Ravens was the best QB of the day.
5. Campbell looked very impressive and displayed why he is the superior QB on our roster. Even at this young age he's ahead of Ramsey in some area. However he is not ready to start, he shouldn't start, and I hope Gibbs doesn't start him at all this year. We need to bring him along slowly and not repeat mistakes from the past.
6. The defense looked pretty iffy but that was due to SOOO many people not playing due to injury. Sean was playing with the 2nd or 3rd string team also. Ryan Clark looked good. Lemar Marshall didn't impress me too much, he allowed a TD in the endzone. The reason it bothered me was because he wasn't watching the ball and I kept hearing about how he used to play DB and he allowed that pass. Our run stopping looks very good. Sean Taylor still has a mean streak.
Warmother and I had problems finding the rest of the Hog family so we sat together. I had my famiyl with me and we all enjoyed ourselves. My godson was trying to crawl all over Warmother.
