I do not use a 1st rounder on a guy with injury concerns, especially when its a knee. That's just me.

It will be interesting to see. On the flip side, I've heard that Jaylon Smith might still end up a first round pick. Knee injury or not.

I think SM would side with you on that one Countertrey.

Charlie Casserly story... several years ago, when both Casserly and the Tuna were still playing GM, The Tuna (while running the Patriots) selected Curtis Martin, who had some injury concerns. After the draft, Casserly noted to Parcells that the Texans had him on their list of short term players, who would not last to a new contract. Parcells replied, so do we. So why, Charlie asked, did you select him. Parcells said "They are ALL short term players." The rest is history, Martin had a fine career with both the Patriots and the Jets.

Sometimes, it's worth taking the risk. A blue chip player can see his career go up in smoke before the first snap due to some freak occurrence. Sometimes, the injury concern is just a blip.

Oh....the guy that's injured?

Injured... yes. But he's also the closest college player to Sean Taylor since... well... Sean Taylor. He is that talented. If he falls, and they don't take him, I get it... but this dude is real, and worth some risk.

It's prolly moot... I don't think he gets past 16/17...

I envision a team like the Browns with a surplus of picks. Or a team like Carolina who doesnt' need an immediate starter taking him. Between the nerve damage AND the micro fracture issues... I wouldn't touch him unless the medical staff knows something we dont.

Yea I knew that, I was speaking more about injury, I thought Smith had the nerve damage?? I've heard many call Smith the best LB in the draft but more of a risk (than Jack) because of the injury.

I REALLY doubt that he falls to 21 - I also would agree that this FO is DEFINITELY not taking anyone that their medical guys are worried about

Oh, yes..., you are right. Jack has a Chondral defect that will likely result in microfracture surgery, and possibly limit his career. No nerve damage.

I suspect the Raiders will grab him at 13... My query was really just about an unlikely hypothetical...

It really sucks... this kid is a monster. Can play at an elite level at LB and Safety, and at a very high level at RB and even Corner. Just a mind boggling level of talent, desire and drive. I hate this for him.

BTW, he revealed in an interview that he may need surgery within a year or so, and wonders about his ability to make it to the end of a contract... honest kid... but now is not the time to talk. That may scare even the Raiders off... I imagine his agent couldn't stuff a sock in his mouth fast enough.

Nice story. Difference is CM was a 3rd round pick. HUGE difference. You do not waste a 1st round pick on a guy with a major injury concern. You just don't do it. Its not a smart move. The only teams with the luxury of drafting a guy like this are elite teams with very few holes, or teams with a massive surplus of picks. We fall don't fall into either category. It would be incredibly reckless for SM to draft this guy, and it would be a big mistake on his part.

I think the only teams that can consider it are those with stacked rosters. If you have a surplus of picks but the talent of the Browns, then you need to spend each and every one of those picks on the surest thing you can regardless of their position.

tis the season of lies and more lies - we're one of those franchises that needs a bunch of players to build around - getting just 1 future great is not happening unless all the guys that pick in front of us let someone really special fall to 21 - some of these FOs are really bad, look at what the Rams and Eagles did ...

thankfully the first round is tonight ...

There will be a couple of teams drafting lesser players based upon need. There will, undoubtedly, be one or two teams with psychotic talent scouts drafting "WTH" type players. In each case, a talented player drops. I suspect there will be a monster still available at DT for us. Nkemdiche will fall... though he is a Rex Ryan type of player, so may not get past the Bills. Jarran Reed may also be there. but, the bottom line is, there is a HUGE crop of quality DT's and DE's in this year's class. I really expect the 'skins to look to deal the pick. There will still be one or two quarterbacks with a high grade available, and teams that are still desperate for one.

Best case scenario for us is if the Browns think 8 is to high to take one of the remaining QBs, but still want one. Then they trade some of their excess to us to move back into the 1st round at 21 to grab their guy, because they're afraid the Chiefs and/or Cardinals will take their guy with their pick in the mid-late 20s.

A more likely trade for us is with the Bengals. They are three picks behind us and are said to be in the market for a WR. Understandable considering they lost Marvin Jones and Mohammed Sanu in the offseason. Minnesota and Houston are ahead of them, and can both also use a WR. If the Bengals feel their guy might be taken by one of Minny of Houston, I can see them reaching out to us. It would probably only net us an extra 4th rounder, but so be it. We probably still get the guy we want at 24 that we would have gotten at 21.

Its a defferent NFL these days. Until you have a franchise QB, you're a pretender. The league has shifted to such a pass happy league that a franchise QB can cover up a lot of other faults.

Both scenarios make sense. I can't imagine that, even though they THINK Bob is their guy, they wouldn't be seeking a hedge against injury. He is made of glass. I do agree, though, that the Cincy scenario is the more likely of the two you mention. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see us take that deal, and then deal 24 as well... Maybe Karl Joseph will still need a home?

Karl Joseph would looks nice in the Burgandy & Gold. I also wouldn't mind either Ryan Kelly (C), or Chris Jones (DT). A lot of people have us linked to Reggie Ragland (MLB). I wouldn't mind him, but think you can find a MLB later in the draft. I'm thinking Scooby Wright

more power to them but deciding to make these trades makes me have very little confidence that they have a clue

I don't blame them for trying. Truth is if you don't have a franchise QB you're just spinning your wheels. We all know this well.

My question though, is there a historical example where this type of trade has worked out? Team traded away picks to move up for their QB? The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Eli Manning.
