what I think we need...
... since everybody has started planning for next year, I thought I'd throw in my two cents (which is exactly how much money I'd like to see Dan spend this off-season on the offense).
As far as the defense goes, we need to do everything possible to keep this group in tact. I can't stress that enough (Smoot!= leader). It will be so much fun seeing this group playing with a year together under Greg Williams system, Arrington healthy, and rotating guys like Clark, Bowen, Lott, Marshall, etc...
As far as the offense goes (which isn't very far on Sundays), the biggest thing I would do is let Gibbs hit the drawing board and figure it out on his own, he's a smart guy, he'll figure it out.
Don't start throwing big names at him in an effort to solve it with personnel "upgrades." Our CAP problems won't let us do that for sometime, so we have to suck it up and get better before going after the next McNabb.
Go the other route. Let's go the route of Bobby Bethard, and mix in some guys that haven't had the chance to make a name for themselves yet. Let's part ways with Gardner, and pick up either a speedy guy (like a Stokely type) who can go deep, but needs to learn some route running to get better at the underneath stuff, or a big guy with great hands that can post up on third down. Let's get a beast of a young guy at back-up running back that can make his own hole if need be on 3rd and 1. Let's lose Samuels, he has lost all sense of footwork and field awareness.
If we want to go after anything, go after an animal at center that will take control of the "O"-line and take it personally when someone gets to the QB untouched.
One other thing I'd like to see is a young explosive kick returner that has a sense of urgency and is running for his life back there (I'll live with a healthy Morten if we have to though)...
Anyway, that's my plan. If somebody has Dan's address please forward this to him, and if he's in a generous mood I could use a portable DVD player for Xmas as well...

Trade Arrington and Gardner for Philip Rivers. Then trade down out of that top 5 pick for additional picks. Make every effort to keep Smoot, Salavae'a, and anybody else Gregg Williams says he needs. Release Brunell. Start Ramsey and hope that he plays as good as Brees with Rivers in the wings. Then build through the draft.

I wouldn't want to trade LaVar, but I would love to find a way to get Rivers. I don't think that's possible though considering the cap hit that the Chargers would take from trading him.gregory smith wrote:Trade Arrington and Gardner for Philip Rivers. The chargers would have minimal cap hit with Rivers if they trade him before his '05 roster bonus is due, his new team would take the hit. Arrington on the other hand may be hard to trade with his contract. Marty knows Arrington well and I think he drafted Gardner. Arrington is the closest thing we've had to a star in so long that we have all become enamored with him, but really what has he done? Trade him!

Mike williams would be great, but I doubt we're going to be able to afford that high a pick without losing someone we don't want to lose... we should let the excitement build and trade down to multiple picks we can afford...

I don't think we can release Brunell without taking a huge Cap hit. Besides you know how Joe loves a veteran back-up, and if it's cheaper to keep him next near, then you know he'll be back. I say we give the reins to Ramsey along with a receiver that can get open deep or win a jump ball...

Trade our high first round pick (which may likely be a top 5) for a low (say 25 to 32) first round pick and a second round pick. Then, pick the best player available in the first round and fill holes after that. Release Brunell at the least cap unfriendly time, and find a replacement backup for Ramsey in either the draft or free agency. Make resigning Smoot a priority, as well as bolstering the O-line. Oh yeah, and find a wideout that can catch the freakin' ball (how hard could that be?).

Do u know how much f-in money we payed LaVar? Like a crap load. Why the F would we trade him after he signed a billion dollar contract. Anyways, he's injured this year, that fugger.
He's good though, he pressures the qb and he hits so hard people crumble. Him and Taylor make a crazy combination. Next year he'll be back hitting with vengience. If he were healthy and playing in the Steeler game, he would have stopped the bus.

We have to forget about another wideout until we do something about the O-line. The Offensive line should be our main focus, but we will have to sign a FA that we can plug right in, we can't wait for a rookie to develope and I don't see a top 10 O-lineman coming out of the draft. We also need to get Samuels to extend is contract not restructure (if he restuctures he'll want $15 mil guaranteed). Samuels is playing better this year than last year but not at the level that we are use to, alot of the mistakes that he makes are from helping out Dockery. With another year Dockery won't need the help. We need a center (hopefully one that has played on a team that ran shotgun formations).
Then we can look at the draft to build for the future. Marty drafted Gardner he can have him for a 2nd round pick since we don't have one, and since we'd be talking to the Chargers how about giving them our high first for their two later picks in the 1st (you don't get one deal without the other).
As far as the D goes not much to do there Resign Smoot and restructure Wynn's contract (he's due $4 million next year)
As far as trading LA ...depends on what we'll get for him consdiering the cap hit we'd take. Then again he's had a year off would you want to be on the other side of the ball when he does get back out there

The o-line should be considerably next year if Jansen and Thomas are healthy. Dockery will have another year under his belt and if we can keep Samuels we just need to find a solid center. If we're able to do those things I think that we should spend our first round pick on a wr. Lets face it, none of our receievers worry any opposing defenses. Coles normally would but he's nowhere near healthy and who knows if his toe ever will be. If we could somehow get Mike Williams or Braylan Edwards that would be huge for our offense.
