New From The Post
MLB Officials to Unveil Nationals Logo
Announcement Expected at Noon News Conference

By Thomas Heath and Barry Svrluga
Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, November 22, 2004; 11:54 AM

Major League Baseball and District officials have scheduled a news conference for noon today at Union Station to unveil the logos for the soon-to-be-named Washington Nationals.

But the official unveiling was preempted this morning by Major League Baseball's Web site, which had pictures of merchandise featuring the new logo before the midday news conference.

The primary logo features "Washington" in a ribbon that rests atop a rectangle that contains the word "Nationals." Below is a baseball ringed with stars.

There are several versions of the logo, according to a preview of the team marks that were viewed by The Washington Post over the weekend. All the marks -- variations of the logos that will appear on the team's uniforms, caps and other merchandise -- will be done in the team colors of red, white and blue.

Some do not include the baseball, and simply have "Washington Nationals." The team logo on the cap will be a curving "W," on a blue background and on a red background, presumably for home and away games.

Home team logos, which likely will grace the front of the team uniform, include "Nationals" in blue with red trim, and "Nationals" in plain red. Some blue lettering will have gold trim.

The away logos will include "Washington" in plain red and "Washington" in blue with red trim. Some logos will feature "DC" on red and on blue backgrounds, respectively. Other variations include gold trim surrounding a blue "Nationals" or blue "Washington," and some logos will be simply black and white.

That looks like a logo for an event, not a team. They could have done better than that.

I don't like the team name and don't like the logo. I'll still be rooting for them though.

How 'bout...

ROTFALMAO

Hey, it's already Red, White and Blue! Plus, they wouldn't need new uniforms or anything! If people ask about the "Montreal" part, just say it's a suburb of DC (pronounced "Mount Real"!) (Feel free to get rid of the accent!)

Pretty weak logo that is for sure. Oh well, least its a team, lets hope they don't leave use in a year when they have to pay for their own stadium.

And just change the "M" to and "N", change the "e" into a "d" and add an "c" on the other curly part!

That's the organizational logo, not one that will appear on the front of the jersey, or on a hat.

That logo will probably appear as a patch on the arm, if at all.

The hats will feature the same classic W that was on the Senators hats, but the home hats will be blue with red outline of the white W and the road hats will be classic Sens.

I like the color scheme, classic, not too flashy, very nice. The uniforms should end up looking equally as classy.

I saw the picture of the hats, but this logo on the Nationals MLB site makes me think that they may wear DC on their hats, etc., at least some of the time.

That was said to be the secondary logo, it leads me to believe that could appear on the right side of the chest if you were looking at the player. Doesn't Kansas City do the same thing sometimes with an interlocking K and C?

Also, it's quite possible those would be batting practice/alternate hats... like you said.

The other thing is the new ownership group will have the right to change the name, uniforms, logo, etc in 2008, when they're supposed to move to the new stadium (MLB picked this one).
The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

I never liked the swirly-que 'W' on the hat...always preferred the old block 'W' from the Griffith days. And I hated when Bob Short switched the colors from blue, with red and white trim, to red.

But, who cares? The Nats are back.

Welch, were you a Senators fan? I was under the impression that the Yankees were your thing. . .

On a side note...that's an excellent avatar, '74.
Back on topic, I really think the team needed a wholesale change at the top. I question their choice of manager. Why not some first time guy for a brand new team ?
Incidently, I wonder if the players' names will be on the back.

FFA asked
Welch, were you a Senators fan? I was under the impression that the Yankees were your thing. . .

- Born in old Garfield Hospital, which sat along the third-base side of Griffith Stadium (now part of DC Hospital Center...)

- Was taught, very young, to love the Nats and the Redskins, even though they lost all the time, and to hate the Orioles and the Colts.

- Mickey Vernon was my first sports hero

- Saw them give Vernon the silver bat as AL batting champion...must have been a game in 1953

- Second favorite heroes were Roy Sievers and Eddie LeBaron.

- Can still name the starting lineup from the '59 Senators, who broke the Phillies major league record for consecutive losses, who were first or second in homeruns (Harmon Killebrew's first complete season). Saw Camilo Pascual take no hitters into the eight inning twice that year -- he won 17 games, had about six shutouts, led the league in strikeouts (or was pretty close), and also hit .312.

- Still have my 1960 Senators Yearbook.

- Think that the best sports year might have been 1969, when both the Ted Williams Senators and the Lombardi Redskins had winning records. That's almost as good as SB 17.

- I was listened to the last game, '71, Nats / Yankees, Phil Rizzutto calling the game for the Yankees (maybe along with Bill White and Andy Messer)

And I could go on...

I cheer for the Yankees because I've lived in NY for 35 years, and my daughter is a devoted Yankee fan. Furthermore, I like the core Yankee players plus Joe Torre, even though I can't stand George Steinbrenner. Now I'll make them my second favorite team, and, count myself lucky that the new team is in the NL.

This logo would work if it was turned upside down to form a 'W'. What is an Expo anyway?

What is an Expo anyway?

I think there was a world's fair or "exposition" in Montreal back in the '60's. Not a team name that was chosen with the future mind, obviously. Like naming a team after a hit TV show...

The Expo is an abreviation of the term World Exposition.
The World Expo took place in Montreal, the Province of Quebec, Canada, in 1967.

The back of their fan base was broken and in shambles when the last baseball player strike took place. The Expos were on their way to become NL champions and the whole country was sure that the Expos would win the World Series.

The fan base never went back to the stadium after that. Somebody will write a book and make a movie about it one day.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!
