Young Buck Sought In Vibe Awards Stabbing

Young Buck Sought In Vibe Awards Stabbing

Rapper Young Buck is being sought by police for allegedly stabbing a man who punched hip-hop legend Dr. Dre at the Vibe Awards on Monday night in Santa Monica, Calif. Buck is signed to Dr. Dre's record label and is a member of the G-Unit clique, which was named best group at Monday's awards.

Buck fled the Santa Monica airport hangar where the show was being taped, police Lt. Frank Fabrega said in a statement. A warrant was being prepared alleging assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident was sparked as Snoop Dogg and Vibe founder Quincy Jones were about to give Dre a lifetime achievement award. A man later identified as Jimmy James Johnson approached Dre, who was seated at a table in front of the stage, and appeared to ask for an autograph before punching producer, police said.

People began shoving, chairs were thrown, punches flew and people got chased. Some in the audience of about 1,000 scurried for the exits. Alicia Keys, the night's top winner with awards for artist of the year and best R&B song, was among those who fled.

Johnson was dragged away by security staff, but then suffered a serious stab wound when he was attacked by a number of people, including Buck, whose real name is David Darnell Brown, according to police.

"Brown is clearly depicted [on videotape] as holding a knife after the assault and is one of a number of fight participants that was pepper-sprayed by officers in their attempt to stop this fight," Police Chief James Butts told a news conference. "We're asking Mr. David Darnell Brown to surrender himself to police."

Johnson, 26, was in stable condition at an area hospital.

After the Vibe fracas was squelched, the taping continued. The show, broadcast last night on UPN, was seamlessly edited to remove any trace of the attack. "They can't stop me. I don't care," Dre said on television as he accepted his award, showing no signs of injury.

Jake, you make me feel old man. Over the weekend you posted about the death of ODB. Now you're posting about this "Young Buck" guy. I've never heard of either one of them before reading your posts! Keep up the good work in informing us old guys about what's going on in the younger crowds. BTW, I'm 28.

It's hard not to have heard of someone who once decided his name should be "Big Baby Jesus" because "I always been Jesus."

That's Jesus as in Gee-zus, not Hey-zeus.

However, I have no idea who Young Buck is. Guess I'm too old for that... :)

If he has, would he admit it on a forum that his mother visits?

Classic movie, BTW. hehe

 Good one, JansenFan. Actually, we really don't have any radio stations around here dedicated to rap music. If you don't like country music, you're pretty much out of luck. That's why I only listen to AM.

Believe me, I feel your pain. I live in a part of virginia that might as well be in Kentucky. At home, we get like 3 stations that don't play country. Then of course, there was the time I spent stationed in NC when we had almost all country stations and of course those oh so popular East Carolina University football updates every 13 seconds......brb, need a barf bag.

I guess 20 is also too old to have heard who this guy is before you posted this, Jake. (At least, for a white guy who primarily listens to jazz. . .)

He's in "G-Unit" with 50 Cent.

He made the songs "Shorty Wanna Ride" and "Let Me In." Radio/No radio, there is still BET and MTV, folks! He's on TV all the time. ROTFALMAO

Real jazz (Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis, etc...) or "Smooth Jazz" (Kenny G, et. al)?

Kenny G? Please. . .give me a little bit of credit :)

Not so much in Marsalis, either (but only his jazz--I've got his classical album and it's pretty great). Davis, Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, they're all good. Davis kind of went nuts at the end of his career, though, Witches Brew (yeah, I know) was kind of his peak in jazz fusion, in my opinion; and Kind Of Blue was of course a culmination in that earlier era of jazz.

I play drums, which is why I first became interested in jazz. I was self-taught for a while, picking up a lot of rock and I thought to myself there has GOT to be something out there that's better than this. . ., pretty soon I was getting into the good stuff. Because of jazz I've also fallen in love with funk, and have for a while appreciated jazz fusion bands with good drummers.

Any other jazz fans on the board, perhaps (cvillehog)?

Hmm, getting pretty far off topic, maybe this should be a new thread. But, yes, I'm a jazz fan. And I used to play, though I was more of a legit ("classical") trumpet player -- conservatory trained in fact.

Didn't mean to offend with the Kenny G thing, but I have met too many people who tell me they like jazz, and that "Smooth Jazz" 105.9 is their favorite station (e.g. my father-in-law).

Yeah, I meant that more in jest than anything else--definitely don't want to offend any Kenny G fans on the board.

You're probably right about the new topic bit. I'm done diverting attention now.

Do any influential people in the music business seem outraged that this fight happened, or was it just kind of expected?

I'd be surprised to find someone who liked Kenny G AND football, so I don't think you have to worry about it.

Oh yeah....on topic....uhhh RIP Young Buck
