Does anyone understand....
...how two men (or four, if you prefer) can go at each other and say nasty things about one another for months, even lie about that person.....and then, after it's all over, say that the other is 'gracious' and wish him the best?!? it seems odd to me. anyone else?

Unfortunately, that's how politics work these days. It less about policy and more about who can dig up the most damaging information about the other, and now with all these 527s out there that don't have to follow fund-raising restrictions things have gotten even worse.

I think he is referring to a secret society of Ivy Leaguers that the majority of the nations presidents have belonged too. I know Bush is one, and I assume from Redeemed's post that Kerry was one as well.

Hmm, I see.
Still, that does nothing to explain the fact that these are the same kinds of things you hear after most elections, from both sides.

Allow me to illustrate how something like this is possible, using my thehogs.net experience...
In the past, BringThePain! and I held long-winding disputes over my opinion of Lavar Arrington, and other issues. We were at odds over these things and created long threads in the Smack Talking forum, which gave to others the impression that he and I hated each other.
In between our public displays of displeasure for our beliefs, I would often PM him to see how he was doing, find out more about him, and see how his business was going, etc. So, in secret, he and I developed a relationship that was somewhat amicable. Unless he made a comment that was inflammatory toward me, I would not "hate" on him, and he'd extend the same courtesy to me.
One time, I was involved in one of the most heated Smack Threads with a few other members of this thread, and "my bitter rival" (or so he was believed to be) was privately recruited to bash me. He replied that he was not the official "Redeemedskin Basher" and would not jump into that fray, something that caught most by surprise.
While he acknowledged our past disagreements and verbal spats he said he held no ill will toward me. He was able to rise above the fray and look beyond our publicly "tumultuous" past.
Similarly, the secret oath between Bush and Kerry (who by the way are distant cousins) goes beyond the public campaigns they held against one another, which allows them, in the end to say "you're gracious" because of their non-public/occult relationship. The power of these secret oaths allow for Bush to call Kerry a flip-flopper and for Kerry to call Bush incompetent all they want without remorse, because they have a bond that runs deeper than the depths to which "mean" words can cut.
Back and better than ever!
Redeemed,
I knew the bit of trivia about Bush and Kerry being distant cousins, 9th cousins I believe.
I understand how two people can be in a heated battle of words and then "make up" and move on.
What I called into question was saying that it was due to a secret oath.
I questioned that hyposthesis by pointing out that the same occurs even when there is no oath in place.

Even though Bush and Kerry were civil towards each other and had kind words about the other in the end, I can assure you that behind closed doors and in the presence of members of their respective inner sanctums, they speak with a lot less diplomacy about the other and in all likelihood use quite a few expletives and adejectives to describe the other.
Sit back and watch the Redskins.

yeah, but why not just say those words in public (expletives censored, of course)? will they be saying anything worse than what they've said already? would anyone really be surprised? i understand the future implications; for example if kerry has aspirations to run again in 2008, he wouldn't want to be remembered as a sore loser. but somehow the stuff he said between last fall and november 2 is different than saying that same stuff on november 3.
and i don't buy the whole 'we need to come together' crap that the loser (and winner) say in the aftermath. hearing kerry say that we need to stand behind our president doesn't make me feel any more compelled to do such.
