GREG WILLIAMS
Guys prepare yourself for the inevitable......Not only are we wasting a great year by the Defense but Greg Williams is slowly but surely making himself a household name again ...he will be A VERY HOT COMMODITY come next winter...And guess what???.....We will lose him......another year another defnsive coordinator leves us....when will it end!!!........I know im being very pessimistic ..CAN YOU BLAME ME???...We all know Williams is doing a masterful job and a team would have to be insane not interview one brightest defensive minds in the game if there looking for new head coach...I have 2 questions that i hope someone can answer for me..#1 what type of contract did Williams sign when he came here..Do we have him locked up??....#2 do you think if he leaves it will affect the resigning of Fred Smoot...i doubt it ..but maybe even DIEHARD FREDDIE will have had it by years end....

Greg Williams as a head coach:
2003: 6-10
2002: 8-8
2001: 3-13
Let's be realistic. Greg Williams has done a great job this year as defensive coordinator, just as he did as the coordinator for the Titans. As a head coach, however, he was terrible. No team in the NFL is going to hire a head coach who is one year removed from being fired for compilling a 17-31 record.

The thing is, Williams gets paid more than many head coaches in the league and he's having success. That alone may convince him to stay (I hope). Not to mention there has been talk of Gibbs grooming him for our head coaching job down the road, where, let's face it, he'll earn more money than if he went to most places. I feel pretty good about him sticking around.
The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

Thank you, Canes... I was going to make the same point. His record as a head coach is going to reduce his appeal to anyone looking for a new boss man. There may be those who want to speak with him about a DC position, but Snyder will take care of those. Williams will likely be around for a while.

i fully understand your point about his Head coaching record being dsimal..I agree.......however let me ask you this.....How was Bill Belicheks first go around in Clevland????..NOT VERY GOOD....look at him now...Now his name is spoken about in the same breath as Gibbs and parcells.....So his head coaching record might scare some but wont scare off all....This is a league that loves to recycle....To think every team looking for a head coach will easily dismiss Williams IS wishful thinking in my eyes....if anything i agree with more with the theory that he gets paids very very well here and MAYBE gibbs and williams have an under the table agreement on a succesion plan.......I HOPE SO
For all who are making the point that Gregg Williams was not a very good head coach, one need only look at Bill Bellichick (sp) and the job that he is now doing with the New England Patriots. For those on this board old enough to remember before XBOXs and Playstations, Bill was a head coach in Clevland and he had absolutely horrible teams.
The point that I am trying to make is that one can learn from previous mistakes and correct them. I believe that is the primary reason that Gregg Williams even took this job. He wanted to learn from Joe Gibbs how to manage a team as head coach. There are plenty of people who are excellent coordinators, but horrible head coaches (see Norv Turner for further reference).

On the plus side, alot of teams brought in new Head coaches last year and it's highly unlikely a team will dismiss a coach after 1 year.
The only teams that would possibly make a change in the office season would be Miami, Clev., and N.O. There is a good chance he'll be here another year with only 3 vacancies available.

Section 228; seats 5-10
Miami, Oakland, New Orleans, Cleveland or San Francisco? I think New Orleans has the players, but can't win. Oakland spent a ton of money - bye Norval. Miami - are you still here? Cleveland... clock is ticking. San Francisco - who are you again?
Why not wait for a good job to open? Expecially when getting a good paycheck in a system where you're respected...? I hope he sticks around. Right now, he's the best coach in DC.

The comparison with Belichick is somewhat decieving. While Bill had a generally poor record with the Browns, the team finished 11-5 in 1994 and even won a playoff game. What did him in was the next season when the team finished 5-11. Belichick then spent 4 years as an assistant before getting another shot as a head coach. The Bills were never even close to the playoffs under Williams. So while I do think that he will eventually get another shot as a head coach, I think it will be atleast 2-3 years until that happens. He'll definatly be our d coordinator next year.

I hope you are right, cause if we can keep up our defense and turn our offense around, we can be a contender finally.

I think another possibility is Green Bay. They have a tough schedule, and if Mike Sherman can't pound out another winning season he might be on the hot seat.
Regardless, all of the above are possibilities, but it is more likely that only three of the six will have openings.
So the question becomes, does Williams' success this season put him in the top three head coaching candidates? Maybe, but probably not. Both Romeo Cornell and Charlie Weiss should be in line for jobs, and guys like Jim Fassel will be looking to re-enter the head coaching ranks.
I'm sure Williams will get another job, but I doubt it will be next season.
I'm bored, I'm broke, and I'm back.

I don't see GW moving. He would have to be offered a HC postion for anyone to even be able to talk to him. In an interview somewhere before the season started, I believe I heard him say he liked the idea of coaching from the legend and it was less stressfull. Seemed to me at the time, he wanted time away from being a head coach if not for good.
Like others have said, I believe part of him coming here, may have been being the successor to Joe down the road.
fingers crossed. How great would it be for us to get 2 superbowls in the next 5 years, and have Gibbs hand the reigns over to GW at that time =)

I remember seeing Greg Williams on a TV interview saying he was very happy working with Gibbs and the Skins. He sounded very believable. I believe what he said was true (not just your standard talking-head talks). This is actually the opposite of Marvin Lewis ... who was not at all happy working with Spurrier/Snyder/Cerrato.
Anyway, I would rather have a DC that many other teams covet (eg, Rhodes, Lewis, Williams) than one nobody wants (eg, Ron Lynn).
Many of our other former DCs are still in the NFL (Mike Nolan w/ the Ravens, George Edwards w/ the Browns, Kurt Schottenheimer w/ the Packers).
