Champ Bailey: Shut Down Corner

When Champ was in Washington, it seemed like he had 'star' status in the media. An above average player and great athlete. Then, all of the sudden, he gets traded and he's morphed by the press into the greatest frickin' 'shut down' corner to ever set foot on the field. A superman, an immovable object....

Well, last night reminded me and I hope the media as well, that Champ is not this perfect entity. He got torched last night by Chad Johnson, just like he got torched numerous times last season. Time will tell whether the Champ for Portis trade was good or bad for the 'skins. My thoughts are that, long term, the Redskins will come out ahead.

Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

No corner is perfect. I knew when I saw Champ bumblin and stumblin last night i'd see a post addressing that.The fact is he was not worth the money he wanted. With our D playing well, they don't seem to miss him all that much.

You beat me too this post!!!! I loved Champ while he was here but I loved watching him get torched last night. The only play he did make was because the "rookie" Palmer threw it right to him! I'm sorry, I don't have sour grapes but it was so nice watching him flop all over the place. I don't miss him one bit. Springs and Smoot look like a top 5 tandem in the league right now.

Right...agreed. Everyone is quick to point out how Denver can insert any chump into the backfield and he'll run for 1,000 yards. But why has there been no mention that the Champ Bailey-less Redskins D is one of the top D's in the league. Can we not then make the assumption that Washington can insert any chump DB and still be a top defense???

Where's the articles on that? Gotta call it like it is.

Well it seems that we made the right decision. I think our defense is way better then it was last year so that's probably why you don't hear anyone saying it quite like that DiesselFan but expect comments like that in future years! ;-)

As far as Bailey goes, I have no hard feelings about him leaving, but I did find it funny on that play he fell down. It just looked funny. If I had been a Denver fan I'd be questioning the push to get him at such a high price. I mean he contributed to a lose to the Bengals.

Shouldn't this thread be titled "Fall Down Corner"?

Anyhow, you hear all this talk about Denver's scheme being responsible for cranking out these mega-yard rushers.

But when a scheme advocates chop-blocking -- which endangers the season, if not career, of every opposing D-lineman -- you can keep it.

That cheap shot last night cost them many respect points in these eyes.

The only thing about the Portis/Bailey trade that matters to me is the fact that going into the bye week, Clinton Portis led the NFC in rushing, and was only twenty yards behind the NFL leader, Curtis Martin. The only thing that matters is what Portis does, unless we meet Denver in the Super Bowl.

Baily was always overrated. We have two corners better than his ass, Springs and Smoot. Springs has 3 sacks this year, when has Baily ever gotten sacks. He also has a pick, Baily has no playmaking ability at all.

The guy's a great corner.

The guy is not a shut down corner.

Like all cliches, with overuse, their meaning broadens. By definition, a shut down corner is someone whose side of the field you rarely look at. Deion was one in the day... DG was in his prime, but only in his absolute prime... to me, Champ never will be.

Teams that actually have a receiver that they can go after him with... should. Redskin fans witnessed it last year, it was on display again last night. it's no co-incidence that a former coach GAME PLANNED the match-up. Lewis also witnessed that the best way to beat Champ is to keep going after him... once you have some success... you'll have more. He gets down and loses his crispness. And to be honest, while I think of Chad Johnson as a good receiver, he hasn't been all that so far this season...

... After last night, Chad has 30 catches for 483 yards and 2 touchdowns... in 6 games... for an average of 5 catches and 80 yards per game... not bad... but consider before he played the shut down corner, his season had him at 25 catches for 334 yards... an average of 5 catches for 67 yards... not exactly huge numbers. He also doubled his TD total last night.

So, his break out game where he drastically improves his season averages came against the 'best corner in the league'.

And while pundits with the opposite view will point out that no one is perfect... a shut down corner almost ALWAYS is... that's what TRULY makes them a shut down corner. Teams WON'T go after them because they get burnt when they do.

It's hype. He got a contract on his hype. he's a great corner, but he's not even the best in the league IMO, and contrary to the new cliche meaning of shut down corner... you don't have a few in the league at all times... you have a few every decade.

And 9 million dollars is a lot of money to pay for a good corner... ask Denver in about 2 years.

That dude came up in here when Portis was having rough games last month telling us how good Champ was (guess he forgot we watched him for 5 years).

Champ is good, but he got toasted last night.
And over the 5 years he was here he got toasted quite a few times on big plays...yes, Champ Bailey gives up The Big Play.
Thats why thousands of Skins fans yelled "Chump Bailey" at the TV.

I just remember Champs always falls down on 50% of deep passes his way.

Aside from Deion, I think that the only real true "shut down" corners to ever play the game were Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes from the Raiders teams of the 80's. Now THEY were real shut down guys.

Champ did that same trip and fall on your face maneuver here in DC. Remember the Giants and Tampa games last season? I remember them well - my seats are in the end zone where he got burned for several TD's. Last night was like deja vu only I was happy he wasn't on our team anymore.

Thanks, Boss, for posting that. Those are my thoughts exactly.

When Champ first entered the league, he was very good....maybe even a "shut down" corner.

In the past two years with the Skins, however, Champ faltered a lot and was beat repeatedly by the opposing teams best (and not best) receivers.

Yet, when he went to Denver, considering his early years, he was somehow still labled a "shut down" corner.

I agree with Boss.

Champ is a good, quality CB...but he is certainly NOT a "shut down" corner.

I wish the guy well....but I am one of those people that loved the fact that we got Portis for Champ. It was a great trade in my eyes because (a) Champ wanted out; and (b) Champ wasn't playing as well in recent years.

I don't want to re-hash that argument; however, suffice it to say...Champ is far from being the "shut down" corner everyone likes to claim that he is.

Monday night's game clearly illustrated that.

Yeah, when Champ used to get abused by Toomer and Galloway and other receivers I would always blame it on his nagging injuries. Seeing a totally healthy Champ get lit up by Chad Johnson (Did you see him get his ankles broken on that one touchdown pass!

) it really made up my mind that we got the better of that trade. Go Skins!

Yes Champ got it handed to him last night (funny no one mentioned his Int?) the Bengals came to play..not sure anybody could have beat them last night. This trade is working out for everyone. Denver # 1 (now #2) in D The Skins #1 in D. Denver # 1 in rushing, I'm still dissapointed with our O.

I thought Bailey was a goody goody, but I was wrong. I never heard him swear before. He was cursing in his post game interview. He's only hurting his image like that. Everyone watching knows Bailey got smoked like a pack of Marlboro's. Champ Bailey thinks he's all that and then some.

i saw the same thing in the jacksonville game this year...it was actually worse... one lineman chopped a guy that was already engaged with another lineman... that is dirty as dirty gets.... it really is crap...

karma... that is why they get blasted in the playoffs... that crap comes back to bite you....

Well, as you all know, I'm a Champ fan. I didn't like the trade for Portis only because of the draft pick we threw in. Champ was unhappy here and now I'm glad he's happy in Denver. I wish him well.

That being said, MAN did he get lit up last night???? Poor Chad Johnson said arrogantly after the game that he can't be covered. I was VERY impressed by both Plamer and Lewis on the play calling to go after Champ.

I am beginning to like our trade more and more. I have been impressed with Portis, but just wish we had somebody that could throw the ball to allow him to do more of what he is capable of doing. But that's a whole different thread.

Champ looked real bad in that game. O'Neal the CB who they dumped, had an INT against them.

As far as Denver's rushing....how long can you run by committee, and be successful? Not to many teams can do it. Griffin went on IR, Anderson is beat up, Hearst is broke and should retire, Droughns was coughin' the ball up and has been back-up material until he came to Denver's hurt running game. And O-By-the-way, that pick we gave them (Tatum Bell) is hurt as well. They have managed so far...but can they do this in December? I would rather have Portis.

They are #2 in rushing after 7 weeks. Not bad huh?....Look at the stats....

They have played San Diego, Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Oakland, Kansas City, Carolina, and Cincinnati.

Only San Diego (2nd) and Jacksonville (15th) are in the TOP 15 in rushing Defense in the NFL. Cinncinnati is dead last, Tamp Bay is 19th, Oakland 23rd, KC 24th, Carolina 28th.

To add to that only one team in the top 10 in team rushing has less rushing TD's than them...Minnesota (2) (why run when you have all those WR's and a stud QB?) Denver has 3 rushing TD's. All other teams have more than 6 in the top ten.

I won't dispute that they have put up good numbers so far....but who have they played?????

How will their system be by December?

I just feel like the days of the shutdown corner are over. We all thought Champ was one. I and many others thought Newman was one. We were wrong. These receivers just keep getting bigger and bigger and the DB's don't seem to be changing. That's why we were holding out hope that Pete Hunter was gonna be this good corner. Because he was 6'3" and could run a 4.3...but alas, it is not to be.

There will never be another Deion unless one of those recievers decides to change what side of the ball he's on.
