Most Talented Skins RB Ever

JusticeHog said that C. Portis "is one of the most talented RBs the Redskins have ever had".

Who do you think is THE most talented Skins RB ever?

Did I miss any other?

It's in the early stages, and I absolutely love John Riggins...but I gotta stick to my guns. I think Portis can be the best the Skins have ever seen.

No, I don't think I'm gonna get a Portis tattoo (to go with my Riggins tattoo), but he is still potentially something special.

I voted for Riggins. Can't argue with the fact that he's our all-time leading rusher. Davis would've passed him but 'Stupid' decided to let him go.

Can't do it. Define talent.

Is it the ability to see the field in it's entirety, and make abrupt changes in direction?

Is it blistering bursts of speed to evade a hit from the side?

Is it the ability to drop a shoulder and blast a charging linebacker out of the way?

Is it the tenacity to hit th same hole again and again until the defensive line breaks down from the exhaustion of their effort?

Is it the ability to fill multiple roles, making you an unpredicatble weapon?

What combinations of the above constitute talent?

Would anyone doubt Larry Brown's tenacity and heart?

Would anyone doubt the power of Riggins, Byner or Davis?

Would anyone doubt the moves or speed of Joe Washington, Terry Allen or Clinton Portis?

I have made a selection. I enhoyed watching Larry Csonka, John Riggins and Hershel Walker just as much as I enjoyed watching Sweetness, Gayle Sayers and Barry Sanders.

But I choose Larry Brown, for much the same reason as I loved Pat Fisher. Made up for missing talent with pure heart... and that's a talent in itself.

For those of you who never got to watch Larry, you really missed something.

I'll have to go with Portis, but what a group to pick from. We could all go on and on about each of these guys. From a pure talent standpoint, it has to be Portis. If he combines his talent with the toughness and class of the guys on this list it will be a great ride.

I've got to agree with CounterTrey, Larry Brown has been, and probably always will be my favorite all time player. The guys was small by today's standards (about 5'11", 185 lbs), but his heart was heavier than Dave Butz and all of the original hogs together. I saw him make play after play during a time when teams knew we were going to give it to him.

One thing that most don't remember about Larry was that he never said that he didn't want the ball. He never voluntarily raised his hand to come out of a game. That might have been foolish, but it is certainly a testament to who he was as a player.

Unfortunately, I never got to see Larry Brown play. If your looking for which back has the most talent, I think it's Portis. If your looking for the greatest RB it's got to be #44.

This is a no brainer. Portis is leaps and bounds above any previous runner Washington has ever had. I really like Riggins and Davis but athletic talent wise they are no where in the ball park with Portis. None of our backs have ever rushed for 1500 yards in a season and Portis has never had a season where he didnt rush for 1500 yards.

Call me insane, but I voted Brian Mitchell. I really don't think I can judge Portis just yet, and I never got to watch Riggins or Brown. I always liked the fact that Mitchell could play QB, and do all kinds of crazy stuff. The first Redskins RB I've ever got to watch and fully remember was Terry Allen. I was a big fan of him when he played for us. I always saw talent at the 'clutch' level, and Mitchell was clutch to me.

Without a doubt in my mind, Larry Brown. He single handedly kept the team competetive year after year (remember this was when Kilmer was throwing those duck like things he called passes). Dude was mostly deaf, has knees that had zippers in the sides of them for easier access (that's overstatement and humor, guys), and STILL led the league regularly.
PLUS he always had time to talk to fans, etc...HELLUVA guy, and a great talent that George Allen ran into the ground...

Kelvin was good when healthy, but he spent more time in the whirlpool than on the field. I liked him but he doesn't belong on this list. I do agree with the points made regarding Larry Brown's heart and character, but if we answer the question, as asked, Portis has to be the most talented.

I have to go old school here. Larry Brown was the best running back I have seen in a Redskin jersey. When it came to toughness he was second to none. A true Redskin to say the least. Did Brown have the overall talent that Portis does? Probably not, but this is a different era of football today. It's hard to compare 1971 to 2004. I'd have to see Portis preform for more than a season in a Redskin uniform to get him into my top two Redskin running backs. Larry Brown is one, Jihn Riggins is two!

At the risk of sounding really stupid - Larry Brown would have been much more successful with today's medical technology. He tried to come back after all the scaring and "repairs" but was never the same. Talent? Who knows, but I'll take Larry Brown over any RB - he's my guy. No disrespect to any of the above. I love Terry Allen too - and he's a poster-child for modern medicine.

Bobby Mitchell was by far the most talented RB I ever saw in a Redskin uniform. The fact that he was moved to flanker in a huge passing offense led by Jurgensen does not negate his talent at running back, it only reaffirmed that he was so explosive and elusive we had to get the ball to him more.

I must agree with you. Bobby Mitchell was the most talented followed possibly by Charley Taylor before he was also converted to WR.

I like Riggins… I just like the punishing, stiff arming, putting your head down and delivering punishment type of runner. Riggins is a back I’d LOVE to have in my offense.

Portis is more finesse, more cutting, juking, spinning type of back. You won’t see too many stiff arms, or see him knock too many LB’s on there ***.

In my opinion of the word “talented” I believe that Portis has more talent.

In my philosophy as to what a great back is, Riggins has more talent.

I know that sounds weird but I don’t know how to describe it.

Portis has potential to be better than Barry Sanders if he stays healthy.

Portis is fast and once he is gone know one will catch him. He is a homerun hitter.

Is/was Portis faster than Barry? I seen Barry get hawked down alot.
