What I see - Clinton Portis
To some Redskins fans, it's easy to look at the Bears game and think Portis finally "got it" and that he finally is learning to wait for the holes to develop and exploit them.
I'm not one of those fans.
I think Portis definitely took a step in the right direction last week; however, it was against a mediocre Bears team rated 29th against the run. No...I don't think Portis all-of-the-sudden "got it". I do think, however, that last week gave Portis confidence. With that confidence, I think Portis will continue to improve.
I am still very excited to see what this young man can do for the Redskins in future games. He is one of the most talented RBs the Redskins have ever had and, in time, I am sure he will "get it". Until he does, it will certainly be fun watching him get there, won't it?

Do not worry, nobody is perfect.

Give the guy a break! He has not had the holes that he needs from OL. Whenever there has been an opportunity and a crack, he has given us over ten yards per run.
He is playing not only with skill but with his heart as well.
We do not have the Hogs with us, our dirtbags are a work in progress. One of them will come back until next season.

Come on, give him some credit considering that we do not have a passing game and defenses are overloading the line.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!
I have to disagree JH. The cowboys defense is ranked in the 20's as well. And we could not get the running game against them. The Browns aren't great either. Ranked somewhere around 16th. Still we didn't have anything there. So this isn't about who we were against. Gibbs changed the plays he called, he said that himself. That is what caused the change. While I agree it will give Portis confidence to carry to future games, it was a better performance and not just lack of a good opponent. Oh and just for the record the Packers D is ranked down there with the Bears. So next week shouldn't be an issue in this department either way.

It depends
Niki,
It does depend on what GB team comes to town. They play terrible one game and great the next one. It must drive their fans crazy.
One question:
Given a choice, Who would you choose at QB?
Mr. Brunell or Mr. Favre?
The offense rests its case.

i think we can all agree that our offense is stinking it up.. but the most promising thing going right now is portis in number 2 in the league in rushing... once again... that is number 2... and our offense isn't clicking yet... this guy is a stud...

Portis is just fine
Those holes that he's running through are small. The problem we're having is that we're not stretching the field. Any team any given week where there aren't long completions occurring, never see any dominant rushing. You can open the pass up with the run, only if people respect passing in the first place. Sadly, we haven't even earned respect in the passing game. No one respects Brunell's ability to make them pay for stacking the line or blitzing. I used to be big fan, even back to the Jag days, but he's not hitting targets that an NFL QB has to hit. True, he also isn't making a lot of bad decisions, but somehow his mistakes have led to 7 the other way. Portis has had those turnovers as well, but he has made up for it with hustle and role playing. He blocks well, runs hard, and always wants the ball. We need to open it up for him. Our offense has too much talent at the skill positions to be this terrible.
JH, as always, your opinion is respected.
I think you're way off base, though. We have to take what we can get here. 177 yards on the ground, to me, is "getting it".
I don't care who you're playing against. When you consider that there were no major personnel changes other than having Sellers in there a little bit more, you have to believe that a majority of those yards came from Portis' ability.
I think you're trying not to get too excited.
I don't blame you one bit, but I think you're barking up the wrong tree. Portis showed me something last week. He showed me that if they O-Line won't give him holes, well then, hey...he'll manufacture yardage.
That's a real good sign.

OK, let me put it differently:
Do you think that C. Portis can run more than B. Favre will -passs- next week?
My comment is: That game is not in the bag as some appear to have suggested. GB has a QB that can change the game by himself for the better.
Our QB has been changing games alright, not always for the better to put it mildly...

GB run defense is really weak with Grady Jackson out... Heck their whole defense is weak... Favre is good but he is always good for a few turnovers... My concern is our rush defense... this is going to be our toughest test so far... if we can shut down the run game... and play their screens well... (linebackers listen up) we can beat them....
first team to 17 wins... I think we can score on that defense...
detroit even scored on them... and Detroit has the worst ranked offense in the league... (hard to imagine they are worse than us or the dolphins) but it is true...
i like our chances...

I think that the Bears games highlighted a master coach utilizing a master back. Gibbs again displayed his ability to adjust to the game. He's tweaked the running game so it worked and P-Mobile took advantage. He's been out of the league for 12 years so he needs a little time.
BTW, 171 yds on 36 carries is a 4.75 yd avg. That's pretty damned good. Portis is the real deal. Makes me struggle to remember #48. The Skins will only get better...and like Bugel said, once we get our offense on track this is going to be a very good football team.

She turned me into a newt! ...I got better.
Re: It depends
I was not implying we'd run away with the game. I was saying our running game should do well against Green Bay's defense. They are pretty down there in the rankings against the run. That was my point. I didn't get the Farve Brunnell thing either. I'd take Farve with a broke finger over Brunnell. Let's not get too crazy with this, "Portis is the #2 back in the league" talk... he's got a long way to go, to be familiar with how to run in this offense... you can't put a lot of stock in total yards when teams have played different numbers of games... after all he's #28 in yards per carry, Tiki Barber has 16 yards less rushing and 57 less carries... that being said, I love the big play possibilities Portis brings, and I think he's only going to get better...[/b]

Some of y'all are right. I'm trying to keep myself from being excited. I cannot, however, convince myself that Portis is quite "there" yet. He's getting "there", but he's not "there" yet.
And...to those of you convinced on talking about Favre, etc. Get off it! This is a Portis thread, not a Favre thread. Geez!

And on that note let me add that I agree with the cautious tone from JH.
Now do not mistake me - I am a very big Portis supporter. I am glad, no, VERY happy we got Clinton. This was a good trade for us.
That being said CP is begining to make me feel a lot better. Not the superstar that some are referring to (based on past years??) but he is begining to make the deal look even better!!
I think that when Bugel gets the line working as it should, both the running game and passing game will be a lot better.

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
The run blocking scheme was adjusted big time. That was the difference. Portis has always been good. In the previous games 90% of the runs were based on pulling linemen. Last week we saw a drastic reduction. The also implemented a nice twist. They had all the linement pull right, and Brunell shoveled the ball to Portis going left. The RDE was fooled cheating to the inside and Portis hate plenty of room outside. Nice wrinkle. You got to give Gibbs credit for adjusting away from his old, once reliable scheme. I look for something different in the passing game against Green Bay. He has 2 weeks to implement something.

Bugel said yesterday that Portis was looking where he was supposed to be looking for the seams that were assingned to be opened first, instead of having a wandering eye looking for one that he could make a million yards from like he was still in Denver. If the seam didn't happen, he plowed straight ahead.
He's learning to check off his routes. That's a sign of maturity and learning how to play in Joe's offense behind a Bugel line.

When he gets "there" you'll be convined by what he does, not what the stats actually show.

A thread about our RB and his success, is not only about him. It is about the OL. It is also about the balance of the entire offense.
I only expect great things from him once we have all components of the offense up and running.
Ah! By the way, if when people say getting "there" you meanthe end zone, we will be there too.
